Foody city breaks?

RoseLoverrr · 28/07/2023 13:13

Looking to do a city break with my husband and no DC in Oct/Nov. Specifically interested in a foody place.

Would be flying from London so an extra bonus would be a destination served by City Airport!

Already had foody city beaks in:
Barcelona, Copenhagen, Palma, Edinburgh, Florence and Lisbon so not those.

I know Lyon is meant to be France's capital of food but not sure what it's like? Any other ideas?

Has anyone been to San Sebastián?

Rick Stein's Long Weekend Series has given us some amazing ideas! Could still be on iPlayer.

I really want to go to San Sebastian purely based on that programme

I’m currently in Budapest with DS. Not specifically on a foodie break but we’ve eaten so much delicious Hungarian food. Off to another Hungarian restaurant that gets great write ups, and looks fantastic value. The food in the restaurants we’ve visited is hearty, fresh and very distinctly Hungarian (we got a couple of recommendations from DD’s Hungarian friend). I bet if you went looking you’d fine even more treats here (especially the lovely wine). We travel a lots as a family in Europe and it’s one of the places I’ve most enjoyed eating.

Bologna is fantastic. I don't know whether you can get a flight from London City though.

Was just about to suggest Lyon, went last year and had a wonderful time, ate amazingly and did a cote du Rhône wine tour (would do a full day one next time) we had a lovely time wandering around the old town and to the amphitheatre.

I don't know about flights etc, but we had a fab time in Dijon trying lots of foods - famous not just for mustard, but truffle amazing local wines, duck etc. Really delicious.

These sound great, thank you. Thanks to the pp and glad you're loving your Budapest experience but I'm not a fan of that cuisine as much as some others. I love Nordic cuisine or Mediterranean in particular - less carby and more fish!

Looking at City Airport destinations San Sebastián stands out.

Other places I've never been are
Rotterdam
Luxembourg
Billund
Antwerp
Zurich

Could any of these places fit the bill?

@Northumberlandlass thank you! Great suggestion. Only 1 episode on the iplayer but I'll check on YouTube

We went to Cadiz purely based on this programme & loved it!

Just back from Copenhagan and the food was amazing - far better than I expected. A great selection of really lovely old world wines too. The city itself is lovely with lots to see.

baddecisionsmakegreatcompany · 28/07/2023 13:50

San Sebastián for sure

Flowerypot · 28/07/2023 13:54

Bologna with a day trip to Modena for a food tour

AnnaMagnani · 28/07/2023 13:54

Bologna, Madrid, Budapest.

While I'm also not Hungarian foods biggest fan, we ate extremely well and there is loads to do.

We also planned each day around a different historic cafe and ate a huge amount of cake specialties.

Warsaw (if you follow Diana Henry, the food writer on Instagram she just got back from a week there and OMG I am booking my flights...I was amazed at the food, I thought it would be mostly stodge but wonderful stuff on there)
Malaga
Seville

Finallybreathe · 28/07/2023 13:58

bologna

I came on to say San Sebastian. Such a beautiful place with amazing food.

NeedToKnow101 · 28/07/2023 14:11

San Sebastián is known for being foodie heaven.

Peony654 · 28/07/2023 14:13

We had a weekend in Malaga recently and loved it, amazing market and beach-front seafood restaurants.

trulyunruly01 · 28/07/2023 14:16

Funchal is nice, the farmers market is interesting, lots of little restaurants down little alleys serving stupendous food. Be sure to stay somewhere within easy walk of the town centre so you can partake of the Madeiran nightcaps. Mild all year round.
I used to love Brussels, the area off Grand Place was a maze of international restaurants, so many different cuisines. But at that time of year it may be chilly and busy because of the Xmas market.

Mumsntfan1 · 28/07/2023 14:24

Rotterdam - very nice and a range of foods available, Indonesien especially.
Luxembourg - pretty old town, not so many options for food.
Billund - not unless you want to go to Legoland!
Antwerp - didn't like the town much. Hard to find good places to eat.
Zurich - never been!
Can you get to Girona? Very nice food and a nice town to walk around

The Polish forests and wild areas have been on my travel hit list for a while, because of your recommendation I'm going to book a city break to Warsaw first 🙂

GEC44 · 28/07/2023 15:17

Another vote for Bologna. Naples and Florence also worth a try.

GEC44 · 28/07/2023 15:18

Some of the best food I ever had was in Malta.
