Would you inconvenience yourself so a stranger could propose in public?

Inspired by the thread of the bloke who proposed to his girlfriend during her graduation ceremony. I shared an anecdote of once being asked by staff to clear an ice rink in the middle of my (expensive) slot as someone wanted to propose to their girlfriend. I refused as did many others as we'd paid and time couldn't be added on to the end (set time slots) and why should I miss 1/4 of my slot so someone I don't even know can propose.

The guy ended up proposing anyway outside the ice rink, I think if someone wants to propose in a way that inconveniences people, they can pay (hiring the ice rink for the hour)?

Anyone been in a similar situation?

And even if the woman wants that kind of public cheesy declaration of live, it so selfish if other people are graduating too!

@LadyBird1973 This! I also think it's a bit of a cop out because it requires zero effort. You just rock up and gate crash an event and it looks like a big display of affection

I've done medieval reenactment in my time and several years ago someone proposed at the Battle of Tewkesbury. It was after the battle had finished and was in front of all the men at arms, archers and public. I thought it was lovely and she was clearly thrilled (they were both reenactors not members of the public).

But yes, it didn't take much time out of anyone's day and didn't cost anyone anything. So all to the good.

I wouldn't have left the ice either, OP. Bloke wants to propose on the ice? Pay for a private session and get the lights turned down low and the smoochy music on. But not in my paid time!

It was a 45 minute dive, shortened by 10 minutes right at the start so no risk, just wanted to see the 🐠 not the 💍

Still rude of them though - your paid dive time was reduced by almost 20%. I bet you didn't get a discount for your missed fifth of time!!

I was once asked in Spain by a pair of scantily clad rude young people to move out the way (was waiting to meet DH and kids in front of steps) so they could film a TikTok video of them dancing on these steps. I said no. They were not happy.

DH was on a plane once when someone proposed from the pilot's intercom. He said all around him people were saying, 'Ah!' but he thought it was hideous and he saw the woman, who said yes, look really uncomfortable and wondered if in private she'd change her mind.

Two people I worked with were dating and he proposed on the staff intranet 😂😂 he asked the web team to put a “Mel will you marry me” banner on the homepage. They had their picture taken after for the staff newsletter and she looked absolutely fucking furious. She was actually frowning in it!

They’re divorced now. Largely because he’s a massive prick.

Personally-I would do absolutely anything I could to sabotage a public proposal. Up to but probably not including, unless absolutely essential, setting fire to the venue.

Please be my friend

This! I strongly strongly doubt the big important man thought to subsidise everybody's missed diving time, but rather thought it was a treat everyone had the privilege of watching him propose

😂
Where does this level of entitlement actually come from? It’s gruesome and fascinating in equal measure.

I always make a point of walking in front of people like that or not moving out of their shot or whatever tiktok nonsense they are up to. Petty? Of course!

That's the shortest proposal I've ever heard of 😂 so bad it's good

Showy proposals are shitty. If you don't know if your partner wants to say yes then its a shitty thing to do to them to put them on the spot and make it difficult to take time to consider a momentous decision. If you do know they want to say yes then basically you are already engaged and it's all just showing off.

If anyone has climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, you will know how everyone is connected to a safety line and you walk in single file all the way round. At the top, you stop for a few minutes to see the skyline and for official pictures to be taken. We chatted to the guide who told us of an excruciating proposal where the woman said no which everyone was party to. It rather put a downer on the second half of the tour for everyone as they all walked down in silence 😳

NoTouch · 01/08/2023 00:53

I have only ever seen one public proposal it was in the 1990s and the poor groom chose to do it in a restaurant next to our large table of 15-ish pissed on a works night out and he had to endure a fair bit of heckling during the whole thing.

Zippitydoodaa · 01/08/2023 07:33

I've been at a party or wedding and on 3 occasions witnessed proposals.
One lady and two men doing the proposing.
Both ladies answered words to the effect of ' we'll talk about it later'
And the man answered ' sit down , you're embarrassing yourself ' .
Very awkward !!
None of the couples actually married.

Oh god my toes curled with embarrassment! How kind of him to inflict that awkwardness to loads of other people (and girlfriend) when you're connected by a rope!

Catsmere · 01/08/2023 23:10

Just as well they were connected, she might have been tempted to kick him off otherwise!
