Age 67. He had cancer.

I liked him as a new reader

Really sad about this. He seemed so dignified. Sounds like it's been a long, difficult illness. RIP.

spiderlight · 24/07/2023 12:27

That's so sad. He seemed like a lovely gentle man.

Helendegenerate · 24/07/2023 12:29

I didn't know he was ill. Same with lovely Emily Morgan who died very recently.

Very sad news indeed.

TarquinOliverNimrod · 24/07/2023 12:30

So very sad. I regularly make his dhal, it's on the bbc website. I’ll cook up a pot in his memory.

Love this - just looked at the website and there are three recipes of his which all sound delicious. Will certainly be trying these, thank you 😊

Cocolapew · 24/07/2023 12:33

Oh no how sad

Easyontheeyes · 24/07/2023 12:34

I just saw his face flash up on the tv and thought, I hope he is ok as I knew he had been ill. It was obviously a report announcing he had died. Very sad news.

Saucery · 24/07/2023 12:36

Oh that is sad. He was a professional and humble man who was very open about his cancer diagnosis.

I was so sad to read this too. One of the good, decent ones.

I'll have a look at that recipe too @KitchenSinkLlama

Do sad to hear. He had the same cancer that took my dad :'(

DomPom47 · 24/07/2023 12:53

Wishing his family and friends patience to deal with their loss. Such a loss to the BBC definitely one of their greats who always carried himself well and had a very calm professional nature. One of my nieces went to school with his son and always had lovely comments about the family.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/07/2023 12:55

67 is no age really is it, horribly unfair.
RIP George, my condolences to his family and friends.

Oh that's so sad, I really liked him. He had such an appealing combination of gravitas and warmth.

I am genuinely saddened by this. I always loved seeing George on the news.

EversoDetermined · 24/07/2023 13:12

Yes, I was listening to 5Live when the news broke at 12. The presenter was very upset, the news team seem to be a very close bunch. A sad loss.

TheMainlySilentFrog · 24/07/2023 13:12

Beautiful and heartfelt tribute on the BBC lunchtime news.

Twwodoorsaway · 24/07/2023 13:12

What a lovely tribute on the bbc lunchtime news. Especially the last bit by Clive Myrie, it made me tear up. Obviously such a well loved man.

Thats a nice idea, I might do the same. RIP George.

Billoddiesbeard · 24/07/2023 13:16

The BBC have just reported on George's passing on the one o'Clock news. It was a beautiful and very personal tribute from Clive Myrie.
Wham an awfully sad loss of a talented, conscientious and "very human" journalist and reporter. RIP George Alagiah.
