Would you fly to Kos this week?

All I keep seeing on the news is these terrible fires in Rhodes, and now on the island of Corfu.

I am due to go on holiday this week to Kos. At the moment the government are not advising against travel to Greece - but, I am a little nervous about going now…

OP posts:

We are going to Ibiza and I am nervous too. Even though it is not affected.

Harpings · 23/07/2023 23:10

Sorry not very helpful!

countdowntonap · 23/07/2023 23:12

Yes

caringcarer · 23/07/2023 23:12

No. They have enough to deal with without more people arriving. Postpone and go later.

Thebirdhouse · 23/07/2023 23:13

I'd go. Both Corfu and Rhodes are hundreds of miles away from Kos.

monpetitlapin · 23/07/2023 23:14

We were in Greece during the 2018 wildfires. We didn't go to a part of Greece that was affected and everything was fine. Which was good because it was our onward travel from Turkey and you couldn't book Turkish hotels from inside Turkey so if we couldn't fly on to Greece we would have been absolutely shafted.

Obviously I can't predict what will happen if you go to Kos but personally, if it's not currently on fire I'd still go.

Beezknees · 23/07/2023 23:14

Yes, if it's booked and paid for I'd go. I'd feel like I'd just chucked money away otherwise.

Can you get UK government updates? I subscribe to Smartraveller. gov.au and get regular emails about changing situations. I'm sure there's a UK version.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/07/2023 23:15

I would, alone. With young children, no.

Who have enough to deal with? Kos is not currently reported to be on fire. It's an island??

Emergency services from all Greek islands have gone to help.

Mommacoops16 · 24/07/2023 08:21

The last thing they need as a small island is people cancelling thier holidays because of a fire that's 440miles away. Kos is a tiny island that runs on tourism! The UK media are running a mockery again, just listen to the word of the gov website

Pigeonbilly · 24/07/2023 08:40

I'm still flying to Corfu tomorrow. I used to be a rep there and know hundreds of locals. They need the money and I'm not prepared to mKe their businesses suffer. We need to support them.

Not thar straightforward. Travel insurance won't pay. And kos depends financially on tourists

wherethewildthingis · 24/07/2023 08:51

How ridiculous to suggest you wouldn't go to Kos at the moment, ignore the person above OP and enjoy your holiday. Greece is a huge country and massively reliant on tourism - I am sure they don't want people staying away ! The idea of not going to Kos because there is a fire in Rhodes is like not going to the Highlands of Scotland because of an issue in London!

StarlightLady · 24/07/2023 08:54

Kos is 97 km from Rhodes and less forested.

Pigeonbilly · 24/07/2023 08:54

@caringcarer the locals want tourists to come. It's called their livelihood. You know that thing that means they can eat and pay their bills.

Corfu is being evacuated

Pigeonbilly · 24/07/2023 08:57

Nope the evacuation has stopped.

Pigeonbilly · 24/07/2023 08:58

It's a shame the British press don't get their facts right instead of scaremongering.

Someonesomeone · 24/07/2023 08:58

We are! No travel restrictions for Kos at the moment, so no reason not to.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 24/07/2023 09:00

I'm flying to Kefalonia on Thursday and we're still planning on going.
If you're going to a different island you shouldn't be concerned. But just keep yourself updated.
The temperature's look like they are dropping later in the week.

Retsina24 · 24/07/2023 09:11

We are booked for Zante in 3 weeks and I'm already panicking 🙈.
Difficult not to go OP without losing money. I think it's a case of going but being vigilant in listening for updates and advice. Hope your have a wonderful time.

strawberriesandsun · 24/07/2023 09:20

There are wild fires in the med every year. Just because there are fires in one place doesn't mean there are fires everywhere! There are over 2000 islands in Greece! Use some common sense people!

Worldgonecrazy · 24/07/2023 09:21

It may help to find a Kos news agency website in English. The reporting from Greek and European news outlets is very different to the British media. It should calm your fears. Also get a map and look at how big Greece is. There is a wildfire addition on Google maps which also puts things into perspective.
