Would you fly to Kos this week?

All I keep seeing on the news is these terrible fires in Rhodes, and now on the island of Corfu.

I am due to go on holiday this week to Kos. At the moment the government are not advising against travel to Greece - but, I am a little nervous about going now…

No. They have enough to deal with without more people arriving. Postpone and go later.

Nothing has been happening on Kos. I know people who have been there for a fortnight it's fine. Staying away unnecessarily will affect people's livelihoods.

Ah perfect, I live in Lambi. We are the last place a fire would reach as we are by the sea and on the edge of Kos Town in bulit up areas. Like Rhodes, Kos and their door open (we are actually cinsiderd even more friendly here!). I have a 6 month old so can feel the parent in you so understand the worry. We are actually in a very fortunate position in that we have neighbouring islands 45 mins away and Bodrum 20 mins by ferry. The vulnerable forest areas are in the mountains and the south which for the large part are not inhabited or have a few houses dotted around, Rhodes has a much larger area of forests than we do. We have these warnings every year anyway so used to it and hundreds of hotels and air bnbs here if we need them. Try not to worry too much right now, the fires in Rhodes will be put out in the next couple of days and the media will find something else to whip into a frenzy!

Hi I’m back again :-) it looks like another hot few days there so hopefully you get through fire free!
two questions-
what is a accurate weather app to use and do you think we should hire a car? I’m thinking if anything we’re to happen we would try and get straight to the airport 🤔

Natmacrsa · 26/07/2023 10:07

Use Meteo.gr as the most reliable weather forecast that includes swimming conditions, wind and mosquitoes too. Hire a car for a day or two is a good idea anyway to explore the island - it's less than an hour end to end though. No point planning to get to the airport for that reason, I work for a travel operator and that's not how that happens if you turn up at the airport, especially on a Greek island in the Summer!

Oh great thanks for your advice! Good to know you work for a travel operator! Recommend any good days out- things to see- keep the kids cool!?
who knows maybe we will bump into you at some point! 😃
you’ve given some great advice I really appreciate it

Well you are in luck, there's loads to do here, something for everyone. For children there's the yellow submarine or glass bottom boat from the harbour (they're a few hours not a full day like the 3 island cruise), Mini trains that tour the town, playgrounds, soft play cafes etc. If you want to hire bikes then there are family ones and cycle paths from Lambi through Kos Town until Psalidi. Public buses run the length of the island from the bus station in town and have a/c and cheap. There is a decent waterpark here with areas for everyone no matter the age (they have a free bus that stops at Lambi and buy tickets there). If you want to walk around thee are archaeological sites, many are free! We have a castle, ancient Market ruins (there's an indoor one with goods from the islands), a Roman Odeon and Roman villa. The harbour and old town are open very late and so many places to eat with all food types. Beach bars in Lambi are particularly good (try Sunburnt Arms) and so many places are child friendly as Greeks are very family orientated. Great beaches for small children is Tigaki (shallow sand banks and clear waters) - 10 mins drive or a bus ride away. You'll have a fantastic time!
