Son starting secondary in September. School only allows polishable black shoes with no logo visible (no trainers).

What do I get that won't get him laughed at (is Velcro now a no-no?), but is also good quality for growing feet?

I get mine from M&S. Re velcro, people on here seem to say your DS will get bullied for having it, but one of mine had velcro until the end of Y9 and none of the other kids could have cared less.

Got these for my son who's starting y7 www.deichmann.com/en-gb/p-m01720923/01720923

We tried on multiple pairs but these were the ones he said were most comfortable.

woollenlampshade · 23/07/2023 21:01

Both of mine had Clarks, very much like the ones above ie both styles. Lots of them had velcro shoes in year 7 including mine but if he is happy with laces then go for laced shoes. Look bullies will pick on anything, hair, glasses, shape of their face, you just need to give your child a retort that shrugs any of that shit off. Mine used to look really confused and say yeah, whatever and just walk off. They can practise their look of disdain in the mirror. If it continues then it should tell them in their planner what to do. It is usually spelled out on the first day along with all the rules.

Ds always had these sort of style shoes at that age.

boysmuminherts · 23/07/2023 21:13

My son had a pair from JL which lasted the whole of y7. Laces.

Like this without the branding.

Thanks for suggestions so far. DS is a size 6 with narrow feet so I think he'll need secure fastenings rather than chunky or slip on styles. I just don't want to spend a lot and then find out I've bought the wrong thing!

(nobody had ever said a word about the velcro)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/07/2023 22:38

DS had these until he topped out the sizes in Y9.

TokyoSushi · 23/07/2023 22:38

DS had these from Yr 4 up to and including Yr 7, we've just graduated to the lace up version of the same shoe for Yr 8! Comfortable, durable, his last pair lasted the full school year including walking/biking to school and playing football.

Absolutely no issue with the Velcro in Y7 but now becoming less keen in Y8

Ashara · 23/07/2023 22:46

I always get my boys shoes from here https://www.treads-shoes.com/

fantastic quality, lasted for more than one school year (size and growth permitting of course) and I’d never buy school shoes anywhere else now. Mine had to have laces in Y7, no Velcro allowed.

Got these last year, comfy and lasted the whole year, got them again for next year!

toottootpipip · 23/07/2023 23:11

I used to buy from M&S but my DS who has just finished yr7 is now in a size 11 so had to go for kickers this year. School don't like the red and green bits on them though, so have got hush puppies for next year, slip on ones.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/07/2023 23:16

DS is going into y8 in his Geox Savage. He's in no rush to move away from velcro, partly because he's dyspraxic, but he doesn't like change for the sake of it. He has high volume feet. At size 3, it'll be a while before he has to give them up at size 7.

Marisquita · 23/07/2023 23:26

@Ashara are Treads still trading - I though not? Hope I’m wrong.

Marisquita · 23/07/2023 23:45

DS has worn successive sizes of Clarks Scape Flare Youth since about Y4 and insists he just wants the next size up for Y7. They seem to cope well with all he puts them through. I asked whether he wanted to graduate from Velcro to laces and he said no, nobody cares and it makes it quick and easy to change for PE etc. So I think we will go with the flow on the basis that if it ain’t broke…

Ashara · 23/07/2023 23:49

Oh no @Marisquita i think you’re right! Haven’t needed to buy any new for a while as ordered same shoes in different sizes and ended up keeping them all so youngest hasn’t needed new for ages and ages. Gutted now, he needs new ones for September and had assumed we’d end up getting the same - need the advice on this thread now 😂

Mummynextdoor · 23/07/2023 23:51

I've just bought my Year 7 starter some Hush Puppies. There was a couple of different styles he liked in their range.

Piyo · 23/07/2023 23:51

Our school has decided to really tighten up school policy and have banned all branded/trainer type shoes.

DCs have only ever worn NIke airforce and while they are expensive they are hard wearing and support the foot.

DS in particular is livid at the choice of shoes he has to pick from. Leaning towards Kickers. DD is having Dr Martin shoes.

mastertomsmum · 23/07/2023 23:56

Velcro is fine, but the most important thing is don’t buy for September now if you are concerned about fit. Wait at least 2 weeks
