Son starting secondary in September. School only allows polishable black shoes with no logo visible (no trainers).

What do I get that won't get him laughed at (is Velcro now a no-no?), but is also good quality for growing feet?

Ds2 (13) wears Kickers Kelland.
I took off the big kickers thing on the laces

Thanks for suggestions- you've all given me a few options to look at Smile

I keep seeing mention of Treads- I've never heard of them. Are they good quality and do they last?

I thought Treads looked good too, especially with removable insoles, but it looks like they are no longer trading.

if you try adding some shoes to your basket on their website, nothing happens.
And there a couple of comments on Google saying they have ceased trading.

Shame, as they look good.

My ds likes the Start Rite "Isaac" style too. He's about to go into Y10 and wants to get them again, as he likes the thick sole and more rounded toe than a lot out there. Our school is pretty strict: shoes mustn't be branded and can't look like trainers. He's a size 9 right now: if he goes beyond a size 10 while still at school, we're stuffed ....

Not read the thread at all but the title caught my eye in actives.

I asked the same question last year under a different name.

I got called a weirdo and had replies that people would not post photos of their child wearing shoes 😂😂😂

Made me laugh. Hope you've not had any of those comments.

I bought DS a pair of men's Reiker lace-up shoes in the Next sale. They're really comfortable according to him. He's quite picky, likes comfort over style! They do look like proper shoes though. He walks 25 mins to school so needs something robust and comfy.

Fourmagpies · 18/08/2023 16:13

Treads were amazing but went insolvent last year.

TheGoodBanana · 18/08/2023 16:45

I am glad you asked this, DS can't tie laces and I have been so stressed thinking that Velcro is a no go so I am reassured to see that's not the case.

I get mine from M&S. Re velcro, people on here seem to say your DS will get bullied for having it, but one of mine had velcro until the end of Y9 and none of the other kids could have cared less.

Bullied for velcro shoes? really? Most of the boys I know just care about getting them on/off quickly when changing and being able to play football in them at lunch!

@rachll if the school doesn't say "must have laces" then laces aren't compulsory

Have a look at photos of real pupils on school website - if their feet are in view

Practically indestructible, comfortable and cheap!

I bought these for DS who struggles with laces and the school is very strict on no visible logos which rules out pretty much every major brand. Will get the same as long as I can. And they do width fittings.

Great shoe. Getting those if I can find them in store.
