Amazon and alcohol.. why?!

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:01

It must be 50 years since I've been asked my age to buy alcohol.. and now Amazon want me to prove I'm over 18 by seeing my passport?!?

What the hell?!

I've sent it back.

It's just policy. Saves any doubt as it's not actually the responsibility of the delivery guy but the seller. My mum had to show hers for a pair of children's scissors 😅

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:03

But I don't get asked in Tesco or the pub. It's ridiculous.

But they can clearly see you're of age? Amazon doesn't have that ability.

Their employees do. I can order beer and DPD don't make this fuss.

I had this happen when I bought a paring knife.

When the driver came he wanted ID but as I'm a bolshy old git, I said no and he took a photo of me gurning instead.

It's the amazon delivery driver that asks for proof. It is ridiculous when they ask 78 year olds for proof of age (like they did with my dad)

TimeToMoveIt · 22/07/2023 17:07

Mine just asks me my year of birth.

Many of their drivers are self employed. It's too risky to leave it to their judgement. I don't blame them the fines are huge and I bet plenty kids have thought of it to get their hands on alcohol

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:14

Then they need to use some common sense. Im 60 ffs

Anyport · 22/07/2023 17:18

If you don't like the service, don't use them.

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:18

Oh I won't be.

Kedece2410 · 22/07/2023 17:20

Is it really that big a deal? In my experience they don't ask for proof just your year of birth

Cant believe you sent it back 😂😂

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:23

They do usually ask for DOB which irritates me anyway. None of their bloody business when I'm clearly old enough

Todays wanted to see photo id.. it's cold and chucking it down. I briefly thought about leaving him out in the rain while I pretended to look for it but kindly told him I wouldn't bother with it.

My 18 year old DD does test shops through a mystery shopping company to see if drivers are checking ID.
She is very young looking and the last three times the drivers haven't checked.
She loves getting paid to order free booze!!!

Very gracious of you, not leaving him waiting and getting soaked to spite him for a policy he has no control over.

Mylefttoe · 22/07/2023 17:33

Best you go out in the rain to buy your booze then. Your loss.

maximist · 22/07/2023 17:36

I get cases of wine delivered (not from Amazon) with no questions from the courier - they just pop it inside the door and tell me to enjoy it!

Not sure why Amazon have become so draconian about it, shouldn't Think 25 apply to them too?

RicksTheHunk · 22/07/2023 17:36

Someone got out of bed on the wrong side this morning. What a grouch, just let people do their jobs. There’s a reason for checking even if you don’t agree with it.

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:41

He just came back!! 😂😂😂
Asked me for my DOB and handed it over.

Common sense prevails after all

I have to say, I have an issue with the passport stuff with people who are clearly over 18yo.

Some people’s like my FIL dint have photo I’d. Never had a passport and still have their paper driving licence.
What do they do then? And if they accept a no photo I’d (like a credit card), what’s the point??

I have to say, I imagine Tesco, Asda etc…. doing the same with home deliveries… that would cause mayhem if they ask proof if id every time.
(which is probably the reason why they don’t!)

mintich · 22/07/2023 17:47

It's just policy, the driver cannot mark it as delivered until your year of birth has been entered on the system. There are also lots of mystery shoppers for this and if they get caught not taking details, they will lose their job.
When you buy alcohol from Amazon it makes it clear you will need ID for delivery.

They are not allowed to. They have to follow Amazon rules.

NannyGythaOgg · 22/07/2023 17:56

In my experience new drivers/employees have to ask for photo id, regular drivers just have to ask for dob.
