Amazon and alcohol.. why?!

morelippy · 22/07/2023 17:01

It must be 50 years since I've been asked my age to buy alcohol.. and now Amazon want me to prove I'm over 18 by seeing my passport?!?

What the hell?!

I've sent it back.

OP, I can't believe this is true. What an absolutely horrible way to behave to someone just doing their job - a low-paid, thankless job at that. 😡

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 18:06

I was asked when I bought kitchen knives, the delivery person has to put you birth year in to prove that they have seen ID, however old you are, I'm 65 so I use showed my driving licence

Katy123g · 22/07/2023 18:06

Amazon usually just ask for my year of birth, but if they asked me for ID I'd just show it to them.

It would be such a non event in my day and it would be immediately forgotten about.

The poor driver was just doing their job. If it bothers you this much buy your alcohol at a supermarket.

The Amazon delivery man told me that someone shouted at him when he had to ask for ID, how horrible

I was perfectly polite and nice to him. I just said I want going to go and find my ID so please return it. Better for him than standing in the rain

I have also noticed a change in amazon policy-used to ask for DOB and the last time the guy asked for photo id.

I too am 60-I was cooking and something was burning and I didn't have time to stand on doorstep and discuss.
I said no and gave DOB.

I also told my husband to stop ordering whisky from there as I refuse to participate- it is ridiculous

SerendipityJane · 22/07/2023 18:10

The problem with trusting peoples discretion, is it immediately gets abused one way or another. Much better to have rigid rules that (try to) prevent too much mischief.

angharadsgoat · 22/07/2023 18:12

I was asked for ID for a vegetable knife. I understand why they do it but it's off putting somehow. I don't like sharing my date of birth, though I know nobody cares.

Though young teen DC was once given a bottle of brandy, by the Amazon delivery driver, without being ID checked. They mustn't have known what was in the box.

YouDontBringMeFlowers · 22/07/2023 18:13

He doesn't make the policies but he will lose his job thanks to people like you.
Companies can and will lose their licence to sell alcohol if they don't check ID and enter correct details.
I actually wish the company l work for would lose theirs, it would make my job so much easier. Nobody enjoys asking for ID, it is a pain in the arse.

Yes but that’s NOT the law so these are rules Amazon decided on.

I get why they do that, it’s making the system more water tight.
But if shops like Tesco don’t need to ask fur Id from EVERYONE who buys alcohol in store, then there is a question to ask as to why Amazon drivers do.
And more precisely why they ask for a passport/photo Id when not everyone will have one.

egowise · 22/07/2023 18:14

They are just doing their job.

You sound like knob tbh

Don't be ridiculous. He won't lose his job for clearly upholding their policies

Btw, it doesn’t mean that the OP was right about the way she handled it!

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 18:16

Some companies use a different delivery service if you want to buy knives, probably so the usual delivery service doesn't have to bother with it, Lakeland does, they use Evri generally but FedEx I think for knives because of age checks

Which is why the only people to be bothered by my stance is Amazon

I thought this was about drunk Amazon shopping, which I'm frequently guilty of. Things I don't need sober are essential as soon as I've consumed 2 glasses of wine.

SerendipityJane · 22/07/2023 18:21

Yes but that’s NOT the law so these are rules Amazon decided on.

And why ? Because they can't trust their fleet of drivers, agents, couriers and goodness knows what other patchwork of operatives not to play fast and loose with their discretion. Quite aside from the reputational damage, there is the very real risk of it may be viewed as a reflection of Amazon policy.

Much easier, and safer to make a one size fits all rule.

Personally I'd love it if we call all be treated as adults - but I can see the downsides.

Thomasina79 · 22/07/2023 18:22

Best just to have it to hand if you are expecting a delivery of this nature. I don’t think it’s fair to the driver to keep them waiting because you don’t like a policy. It’s not the drivers fault and they have dozens of parcels to deliver! There are plenty of off licences who also ask for proof of age!

The delivery guy for Naked Wine has never asked for ID or my dob. 🤷‍♀️

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 18:47

Different retailers just have different policies, the supermarket deliveries seem to be think 25, Amazon just has a blanket policy of checking everyone that buys the over 18 things and others like John Lewis don't sell anything where you need an age check online only in store.
