We don’t do hitting as it is possible for that to dissolve into madness. So we just do shouting out.

what do u do if two people say it at the exact same time. I said just get a point each or half a point my husband thought that was an awful idea.

When you see a yellow car, say yellow car. Points are very Not In The Spirit.

THANK you. I feel some people are confusing the pure and sacred pastime of Yellow Car with Punch Buggy.

DarkDarkNight · 22/07/2023 16:53

No points for us, we call it Yellow car punch and squabble over who started saying it first.

We have the same argument over shade of yellow 😂 that’s more gold/bronze/veering towards green.

AlligatorPsychopath · 22/07/2023 12:23

Well clearly you have to settle it with a round of "Brians of Britain".

But personally I think points are not in the spirit of Yellow Car anyway.

NICE!

Diddykong · 22/07/2023 16:57

We don't keep points. Its just who says it first wins. If it were a tie situation then I guess wed wait for the next car as a decider.

My neighbour recently got a yellow car. Bet she's regretting it now my DC like to shout about it every time we leave or return to the house.

ThatFraggle · 22/07/2023 17:16

Punch buggy?

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 22/07/2023 17:35

Ours is yellow cars or minis, 2 hits if its a yellow mini. We don't punch because I bruise easily and I would look like I'd been abused.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/07/2023 17:39

We had to move to points from the outset as DS is immensely strong and has been from a young age, and also has poor coordination so not all that well able to judge how hard he's hitting. Plus DD is the ultimate drama llama and will scream the house down if she's accidentally bumped, let alone deliberately hit. It's a poor combination. I'm pretty sure that John Finnemore would have written the game differently if he had ever travelled more than 10 minutes in a car with my DC.

HedgehogOBrien · 23/07/2023 07:10

John Finnemore did not invent Yellow Car!!!

NuttellaAndPuppyLover · 23/07/2023 07:33

I never heard of punching or hitting for this! How does it work?
Our rules are - one point each if said at the same time, 2 points for a yellow mini, 4 points for a beetle, -1 point I'd it's an AA van (and your next point goes to the other person for extra penalty), also -1 point if you say the wrong thing (ie car when it's a van). I've also been known to call yellow things that are not exactly yellow so now we have a new category which is "mummy's yellow" which can be used for several colours 😂

BobajobBob · 23/07/2023 07:44

yellow car, we call ‘budgericar’ and a van ‘vanana’
pick up truck, ‘Jim Bob’ if driven by a man and ‘Mary Jo Lisa’ if a woman

Vans and MJL attract double points

Addicted2Sugar · 23/07/2023 07:44

I am new to yellow car and a bit gutted my kids aren't younger. They are still young enough to play, I just feel we may have missed years of this
We used to play pink car and scream pink car when we saw one, but there was no points or punching.
My questions are many. So you see a yellow car and then what happens the whole car starts hitting each other? I can just imagine myself squatting and flinching whilst driving. My kids would be really punching each other and every journey would be a nightmare. How are you talking fondly of a game that surely must be carnage?

Bananas1350 · 23/07/2023 07:46

@Addicted2Sugar hence why we have no hitting 🤣 my son is 19 so now it is mostly just my and gorgeous husband playing. Sad really I suppose ha!

I am the overall winner to beat though I saw 17 in one day and a trailer with ten yellow cars on it. My husband has a long way to go to beat my record 😍😍😂😂

We say “cheese on wheels”. I have no idea why. Dc learned the game at school. I’d never heard of it but maybe because I lived in HK till recently and there yellow Ferraris are two a penny so it wouldn’t work.

We don't do points either, for complicated historical reasons when one person shouts "yellow car" the other person has to shout "horse!"

I feel you might appreciate the T-shirts we recently got DS for his birthday - yellow car one now covered in chocolate as he was wearing it whilst "helping" me make his cake yestday.

Sosbanfachtheresatellyinmybath · 23/07/2023 08:15

We need to up our yellow car game!
We just shout 'cheese on wheels' 🤣

itsmeafterall · 23/07/2023 08:19

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar
We refer to the white Fiat 500s as 'eggs' and the yellow ones as 'yolks' 😬

All of this nonsense about not punching. Where's the fun in that ? Yes it can escalate but a bit of inter family scrapping in a small confined space is always such fun 🤩

itsmeafterall · 23/07/2023 08:23

@Whichwhatnow my son when little , once asked
'Do people in yellow cars have a skewed view of the world and think that there's lots of casual violence going on, because people are always hitting each other when they see them ?'

It seems not. Thankyou for answering one of life's mysteries 😬

itsmeafterall · 23/07/2023 08:24

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal where did you get that bloody wonderful tshirt please ?

Megifer · 23/07/2023 08:27

We follow the Swiss rules so no one gets a point.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/07/2023 08:36

DH found it, @itsmeafterall, and now can't remember where! I shall investigate and report back.

SabrinaThwaite · 23/07/2023 08:37

We play mini punch, double punch for a yellow mini. No hitting the driver (always me) so that leaves large adult DS to slug it out.

NormaSnickers · 23/07/2023 08:47

We just shout Cheese and do a small punch for a yellow car/van/anything on wheels. But we also do Punch Buggy, bus biff and Tesla tickle, so any journey with DS and I has the potential for quite a lot of activity!
We’ve recruited several friends who now do the same but I have on several occasions tickled a friend who isn’t in on the game, much to their surprise 😁

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/07/2023 09:04

John Finnemore didn't invent The Yellow Car game, but he did give it a new lease of life I think. We definitely played it in the 1970s, and pub cricket when there were still lots of pubs and not many motorways.

We also play a pink car version "Ham on Wheels" or "Hambulance".

There is a particular shade of "dark yellow" that Mini use that caused so many arguments, it's been disqualified, but I hadn't thought of checking it on the DVLA website. Great idea!

With young adults/teens it is banned due to excessive violence but does occur covertly amongst us.
No points, it’s all actions. Yellow car = punch; soft top = slap to top of head; mini (pinch) = pinch; police car (po-po) = poke. All with no returns added so that it can’t be reciprocated.
