Did Uxbridge just vote for Climate Change?

Tatami · 21/07/2023 07:10

By 495 votes? The reason for the narrow Tory win appears to be down to a campaign against the Ultra Low Emmission Zone. Cleaner air, doing something positive about Climate Change, helped by access to the best Public transport network in the country? Nah, more of the same please; dirty air and dirty politics. FFS Uxbridge.

Inner London doesn't need cars it's transport is good outer London is very different which is why there are more older cars we can't afford new ones but can't spend 2 hours commuting a 20 minute drive

This is exactly it. And I think some posters here are confusing uxbridge with inner london.

Not going to happen without infrastructure and support.

although manufacturers may have a different idea when an electric corsa cost £38,000

Of course it is not going to happen without infrastructure and support!

We need to get rid of the Tories, they have held us back for 13 years. Look at all the subsidy cuts - we used to be able to get subsidised solar panels, we used to have insulation grants, we used to have public transport investment.

Every other party supports investment in infrastructure.

What about Labour’s plans to build millions of homes?

How environmentally friendly will that be?

I wonder how many of the posters who claim the ULEZ expansion is solely a good thing live in the affected boroughs?

And that’s going to be a hard sell to the people of already over developed uxbridge / ruislip. Who have already lost most of their green spaces.

Confused Are we opposed to housing now?
This is a prime piece of whataboutery.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 21/07/2023 09:16

Wasn’t it a Conservative policy under Johnson ? And didn’t the government make Khan expand ULEZ in order to obtain funding for TFL ?

none of the candidates were talking about that. So all you had was “we will stop ulez”

And that’s how Tory’s stayed.

what it needed was “yes ulez is shit. We will put it back two years which will give us time to support you better, and put in infrastructure- here’s the plan”

although, that would have taken trust in a politician and we don’t hVe that anymore.

Im actually a massive environmentalist and find the whole news utterly depressing at the moment. And actually i am in favour of ulez - just not the shit show of implementation.

however, we have built the world we have the way we have. For ulez to happen this fast it needed better support, better consultation, better funding of public transport. More support for those in the local area inside and outside the zones. It’s been hit with the chip issue and covid.
just shrugging and going “kids dying” which kahn is doing shuts down any actually discussion in how it should have been implemented.

Spot on. The inner London congestion areas were introduced over a longer period and in an area where public transport is integrated to criss cross the area. Most people really can live in central London without a car for day to day use. Air quality was also a significant issue and overall the roll out worked.

Outer London could have worked if it had been planned and delivered properly and with consultation instead of Kahn's "nodebate" approach and demonising anyone who dares to question it.

As it is, the whole scheme has lost support which is massively disappointing.

It was.

labour didn’t do enough reminding of that. Kahn did bring it forward though.

If something is a 3 minute drive away most people dont need to drive

Can you show examples of every address in Uxbridge served with an GP surgery, a hospital, a vet, a supermarket and a school
3 minutes drive away?

Thanks!

Someone was suggesting that the ULEZ would prevent people driving 3 minutes to the local shops.

How far can you drive in 3 minutes? If the average speed were 20mph then 1 mile. It really is not very far, and as many people as possible need to stop driving for such short journeys.

Is building on an huge scale environmentally friendly?

You defend ULEZ because you think it is and vilify people who vote against it because you say it is.

You also defend the much bigger impact of mass building.

Double standards much?

The taxpayer cost in camera replacement alone is going to be huge. Every time they are put up they are cut down within hours

Hang on, I thought that Uxbridge and Ruislip was a rural constituency, have I been misled?

IScreamYouScreamWeAllScream · 21/07/2023 09:22

Uxbridge isn't practically rural, but it is close to more rural areas. As it's on the London boundary a lot do people don't work in London and therefore tfl is totally useless. There is no joined up transport to our of borough.

ULEZ is deeply unpopular, HS2 is devastating

Also, look on a map - south Ruislip and Uxbridge are totally different areas. It's really odd.

no idea why there keep voting that way

Try living in Harefield without a car. With a job to get to, kids in school and at childcare who need dropping off before you get to that job.

In fact try doing the same in the overdeveloped areas of Hillingdon where all transport goes in one direction.

Do tell the locals how easy this is to manage without a car. They could do with a laugh.

@jgw1 where did they say that?

As pointed out above I think you misread that post. You were so busy telling people they don’t need to drive a mile to the shops you did the same to quite a different point.

its got shit public transport.
its public green spaces have been built on - a lot for hs2.
there are farms and allotments and horses.

rural doesn’t mean you can use it for your own use

Into Uxbridge and then out again. On public transport.

buses that are now taking half hour longer because of hs2 work.

they are only allowed there if they are walking or cycling in the rain to the shops

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 21/07/2023 09:30

It is an odd area. It’s heavily and densely built on with heathrow and all the supporting trades areas.
the other sides boarder berkshire, buckinghamshire and hertfordshire.
people live and commute between the two areas. Kids go to school in out of county boroughs, without many school coaches. It’s easier to think of it as one large area. And Kahn’s affectively put a toll road inbetween people’s lives.
