Did Uxbridge just vote for Climate Change?

Tatami · 21/07/2023 07:10

By 495 votes? The reason for the narrow Tory win appears to be down to a campaign against the Ultra Low Emmission Zone. Cleaner air, doing something positive about Climate Change, helped by access to the best Public transport network in the country? Nah, more of the same please; dirty air and dirty politics. FFS Uxbridge.

“I'm not sure why anyone would expect the Constituency that previously elected Boris Johnson to make decisions that are in any way sensible.”

Well said.

Half of the world is suffering under extreme heat. It’s only July, may well be us next. But hey, who cares as long as they can stick it to Khan.

Fools.

It may currently appear that the Tories made an astute political choice in opposing the ULEZ that they introduced, but I am far from convinced that in many Shire constituenies it will be a vote winner being on the side of polluters.

LittleBearPad · 21/07/2023 08:59

calmcoco · 21/07/2023 08:44

If you don't drive and you don't use public transport, why are you opposed to ULEZ?

This seems illogical, I would be interested to understand how poor air quality and traffic congestion benefit you personally?

How will the ULEZ reduce congestion in suburban London? People will largely already own or buy compliant vehicles. The poorest may not but it’s hard to see how that is a good thing?

TheCyclingGorilla · 21/07/2023 08:59

I don't have a car and use public transport everywhere HOWEVER I live down the road from the most recent ULEZ expansion (not Uxbridge). My neighbour had a business that relied on a van but it didn't meet the ULEZ standard. He couldn't afford a new van so he's given up the business and now lives on benefits. He was close to retirement age and decided the investment wasn't worth it.

I mean, the air on the tunnel sections of the Tube are just as dirty and gross as the grass verges of the A40, yet it's deemed GREEN. You get a black nose just travelling a few stops!

zen1 · 21/07/2023 08:59

jgw1 · 21/07/2023 08:55

Maybe if Central Government had been honest over the past 13 years, charged polluters for the pollution they cause and funded local government properly there would be no need for the ULEZ.

Yes, I agree with this.

manontroppo · 21/07/2023 09:00

IMustDoMoreExercise · 21/07/2023 08:52

Electric cars are twice as heavy as other cars and so the pollution from tyre particles is much higher.

They also cause more potholes because they are heavier.

They also contribute to congestion in exactly the same way as a ICE vehicle.

Mirandawrongs · 21/07/2023 09:00

Danny boy (actually on voting paper) had no actual policies.

I’m a local boy.
I was raised here.
No opinion on the massive amount of building occurring without supporting the infrastructure.
crumbling hospitals, no dentists for nhs, doctors full or refuse face to face appointments.
his door to door lot just kept saying “he is local, so thinks about that” but no answers.

tara66 · 21/07/2023 09:00

People in London are fed up with SK.
He over turned Westminster Council's planning refusal (x 2) to permit the Paddington Green Police building site in Edgware Rd. to be used for 3 new huge buildings for about 565 flats but only having a total of 18 parking spaces (for disabled only) - but it will have 800 bicycle racks!

You cant walk or cycle in the rain?

Like I said ridiculous.

Of course you can, however it’s going to put non ulez living people using the local shops within the ulez zone, if it’s a chore.

What do you know about the area? It's in a triangle of M25, M40, M4 and has Heathrow as well at Northolt and the building gridlock for HS2.
Being on the border most shoppers won't be paying to come in from the area outside the M25 just a 3 minute drive away but will drive to Reading or Basingstoke instead....better shops out of ULEZ zone but a 20 min or more drive so the town centre will die. The area has Harefield Hospital (heart) and Mount Vernon (cancer treatment for areas outside ULEZ including Hertfordshire) neither of which are on any train or tube lines.
Khan has just spent loads of money on the superloop but for us it's just a renaming of an existing bus route the 607 to the SL8. It will still take me over an hour to get to cancer treatment that in a car takes 15 minutes. I have to take my sister who is disabled to both hospitals weekly but I can't afford to trade in my car nobody is giving us any scrappage I'm not on benefits and if I was £3000 wouldn't get me a car suitable for work or her wheelchair....I need 7 seats the cheapest i can find complient is a 2006 for £4000....a year older than my current galaxy I paid £3k for over 6 years ago.
My husband is SE he makes gates he can't afford to replace his van even with the scrappage scheme vans are too expensive so come September were both out of work.
It's way more than 1 in 10 effected around here....when your income goes on rent or mortgage at the rediculous rates they are new cars are not affordable which is why when we go to Yorkshire were amazed by how many new cars there are.

Exasperatednow · 21/07/2023 07:44

What would be your alternative to Ulez. Having lived by the north circular and walking through the gridlock that is north London what would you suggest?

North circular is inner London we don't have those issues

There is something very wrong if most people need to drive to the local shops,

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/07/2023 09:05

A tax I’d like to see would be double road tax for the very heavy, relatively new cars that are everywhere now - bloody great things like tanks. They must surely cause greater wear on road surfaces, so at least there might be a bit more for mending potholes.

Anyone who can afford the price of one of these, can afford the extra road tax.

I do happen to agree with ULEZ because I have seen for myself how it changes peoples habits re driving older cars into London, which can only be good for the air quality. Appreciate that this causes problems for people with older cars who can't afford to upgrade, but it's also true that the very poorest in society are less likely to own cars at all and more likely to live in congested parts of the city like along main roads etc.

But I also agree with your suggestion re charging people extra to drive high end cars like Landrover Defenders into cities like London.

Inner London doesn't need cars it's transport is good outer London is very different which is why there are more older cars we can't afford new ones but can't spend 2 hours commuting a 20 minute drive

That would involve central government doing something. If it doesnt involve enriching their mates thet are not interested,

And my reply to you wasn’t just about ulez. But the demonisation of perfectly good useable cars.

not the stinky shit box diesel who has had its DPF removed. But perfectly good cars whose tail pipe emissions are lower than those made today. But demonised because they are older.

The ideal really is to reduce reliance on private vehicles.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 21/07/2023 09:07

Khan has just spent loads of money on the superloop but for us it's just a renaming of an existing bus route the 607 to the SL8.

He likes that, repackage it, put run a competition to find the most worthy name for it and blow his own trumpet. See also the naming of the Overground.

Same shitty overpriced service, but tied with a nice bow.

My car is compliant (I'm in a neighbouring area) but who knows if it will be next year? Its a tax grab on speed in outer London which isn't justified by the air quality.

I'm affected by all the local trades which are either shutting up shop or having to hike up prices to cover costs. They can't replace the vehicles even if they have the money due to the long wait lists for the expensive compliant vehicles. (wait lists longer than the warning time for the change).

My neighbour is affected - her carer and MacMillan nurse can't afford to replace their cars which as older vehicles are now demonised. Everyone is affected in terms of increased local costs.

The greenest car is still one which you keep until it drops, not one which is replaced every few years to avoid a tax hike.

If something is a 3 minute drive away most people dont need to drive.

The poster wasn’t saying that people drove three miles. They were saying the same M25 was three minutes drive away and that people the other side off it would no longer travel into Uxbridge but go elsewhere - they will drive just as far if not further to Reading etc.

I note you didn’t respond to the rest of the post.

Im actually a massive environmentalist and find the whole news utterly depressing at the moment. And actually i am in favour of ulez - just not the shit show of implementation.

however, we have built the world we have the way we have. For ulez to happen this fast it needed better support, better consultation, better funding of public transport. More support for those in the local area inside and outside the zones. It’s been hit with the chip issue and covid.
just shrugging and going “kids dying” which kahn is doing shuts down any actually discussion in how it should have been implemented.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 21/07/2023 09:09

Can you show examples of every address in Uxbridge served with an GP surgery, a hospital, a vet, a supermarket and a school
3 minutes drive away?

Thanks!

CatchCatchThePigeon · 21/07/2023 09:10

The Ulez penalises the poorest. Our dog walker is giving up if it comes in as he has a non compliant van and cannot afford to buy a new one. So that's a business that will completely shut if it is extended to the outer boroughs. As we have a date for it, he has sent a notice out to all his customers saying his last dog walks are this month.

I totally understand something like this in the inner boroughs of London where there is an abundance of public transport. But in the outer boroughs, we have just had bus routes slashed. The trains are not back to a pre pandemic timetable and the tubes in the outer boroughs are far less reliable than central London. Everyone knows it is a money making scheme with no uptick in any other public transport that would help!

Willow12345 · 21/07/2023 09:10

NorthWestThree · 21/07/2023 07:21

"Money making scheme" - yes, the money is being put in to improve the public transport system.
EVERYWHERE has an air pollution problem. The entire country. Pollution is everywhere.

But people don't give a fuck about climate change, about air pollution, about the future of the planet and it's population. It's all about money.

We learned about global warming, pollution, the ozone layer, all of this, when I was at school in the 80s. We've known about climate change for decades. And now it's too late.

No one gives a fuck.

And what twats are still voting Tory FFS? I honestly have given up all hope with humanity. We are all doomed.

Exactly this 👏

Not going to happen without infrastructure and support.

How environmentally friendly will that be?
