Would you have a couple of glasses of wine if your dc had a friend sleep over?

Dc (year 7) asked a friend to sleep over quite last minute today. Said yes of course. But usually dh and I would have a couple of glasses of wine with a movie on a Saturday night.

I've left the wine in the fridge as I'm just not sure what the "rules" are on this!

Seems fine 🤷‍♀️

It's highly unlikely there would be an emergency and taxi/ambulance if so

AreMyDucksinarow · 15/07/2023 21:27

I wouldn’t but I don’t drink

Just wouldn’t be worth the risk for me of something going wrong it would happen the one time I do decide to have a glass of wine

entitledparents · 15/07/2023 21:28

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Sarfar45 · 15/07/2023 21:30

A few glasses is absolutely e

LobsterCrab · 15/07/2023 21:31

A couple of glasses - yes I would.

AP5Diva · 15/07/2023 21:31

There are no rules, but I personally would not. I’d prefer to have a clear head.

pinkyredrose · 15/07/2023 21:32

Why on earth wouldn't you? Genuinely confused.

orangeleavesinautumn · 15/07/2023 21:33

I wouldn't if I was responsible for children

rainingcats · 15/07/2023 21:33

I probably wouldn’t just in case I had to drive an upset or unsettled friend back home in the middle of the night. If they lived in walking distance then I would probably have a glass or two.

I dunno, them going back to their house tomorrow "what did you do?" "We watched Sweet Home Alabama and the mum had wine"

Possible judgement from other family?

Yes without a second thought at that age, probably not if they were 6/7/8 having their first few sleep overs in case the child needed taking home. High School, sure.

A couple of glasses of wine yes of course. Getting sloshed mabey not.

I'm curious what you think might happen?

Comedycook · 15/07/2023 21:34

No I wouldn't. Not while being in charge of someone else's child.

biggreentree · 15/07/2023 21:34

I wouldn’t care about the judgment but I wouldn’t drink in case I needed to drive the kid home or to hospital etc

Inkypot · 15/07/2023 21:35

No, but then it's very rare for both me and my husband to have a drink together anyway. We always play it safe just in case either of us needs to drive somewhere in an emergency (we are carers for my parents as well)
If we had a child's friend staying over we would definitely remain clear headed as it's just good sense really. Save the wine for tomorrow evening if you really can't go without it.

Inkypot · 15/07/2023 21:35

*I didn't mean that last line to sound as snarky as it sounds, sorry!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 15/07/2023 21:35

Yes of course, unless you know the visiting child has been abused (seeing adults drink alcohol can be triggering) or its parents have alcohol problems.

If you're that worried about judgement, drink the wine out of a tumbler.

Still not seeing the problem. It's perfectly normal to have wine at the weekend. Hope would the kids even know what you're drinking?

pinkyredrose · 15/07/2023 21:52

The kid lives a few metre's away. Enjoy your wine!

I don’t need a reason surely for a preference to be clear headed when responsible for a child that I do not know as well as my own? There’s a chaos factor there.

Sewingdufus · 15/07/2023 21:55

No, I wouldn’t. But I live rurally and rarely drink as I have to be able to drive in an emergency.

Chaos factor? What ?

IKR? I genuinely boggle at people whose lives have been so plain-sailing that having one extra 12 year old to stay constitutes chaos.
