Can I do this while signed off from work

Signed off with a chesty virus and I’m starting to feel a bit better and feel ready to get some fresh air. My bf has randomly got free tickets to a family friendly food and drink festival which is at a park, and wants to take our little one and thinks it would be good for me to get out for some fresh air. It’s a daytime thing and there’s food and drinks stalls. I’d like to try and venture out as it’s at our nearby park but I’m worried if work see me? Would that look bad? Or is it okay to go out for a bit for fresh air and go enjoy being out for an hour.

Getting a bit of fresh air and gentle exercise is definitely good for you and is to be encouraged and no employer would think anything of this.

However spending a whole day outdoors at a festival is quite different and if I was your employer and you did this I would consider that you are definitely well enough to be in work.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/07/2023 09:12

Are you going back on Monday?

icanflytoday · 15/07/2023 09:22

Only if you are going back to work Monday.

If you are well enough to stand up at a festival and enjoy an entire day out, you can work.

Notanotherone5 · 15/07/2023 09:25

Surely if you’ve got a chesty virus you shouldn’t be mixing with umpteen people at a festival, even if it is outdoors!

Paq · 15/07/2023 09:26

If you are infectious then absolutely do not go.

KateyCuckoo · 15/07/2023 09:26

Mmm share your germs with everyone- great!

Fine if you’re going back to work on Monday.

Good lord, what twisted logic is that?! This is why so many people are stressed to the max. Why do you think that is healthy?

OP we have lost the art of convalescence. Going out is not forbidden when you’re signed off sick from work. Being able to have a walk in the park and getting some fresh air does not mean that you should be working. It’s perfectly fine.

drpet49 · 15/07/2023 09:29

Yes it would look bad. Signed off work but miraculously fine for a festival.

ChrisPPancake · 15/07/2023 09:32

If you were signed off yesterday but able to go to a festival today then if I worked with you I'd think you were taking the piss.
Signed off last Monday and due back next week? That's probably ok.
But if you really are that unwell I'd be surprised at you wanting to spend a whole day out tbh.

DysmalRadius · 15/07/2023 09:35

It's fine, so long as you're not contagious!! You're feeling better so you are going out for an hour - your employer doesn't own you and you are the best judge of what you feel up to! Have fun!

TidyDancer · 15/07/2023 09:36

Back on Monday and not contagious? Go. Otherwise definitely not.

Whattodo1112 · 15/07/2023 09:39

Not contagious anymore and going to go back on Monday yes, I was only thinking of going for an hour to sit in park with something to eat with my family. Not start raving and downing shots.

Not a good look at all

TrueScrumptious · 15/07/2023 09:43

It’s completely fine. You are going back to work on Monday.

Express0 · 15/07/2023 09:44

That’s fine. Enjoy yourself :)

notacooldad · 15/07/2023 09:46

As you are going back to Monday would it matter who saw you?

Starlightstarbright2 · 15/07/2023 09:46

Going back Monday , fine yes .

mraladdinsir · 15/07/2023 09:47

I feel it wouldn't be ok to attend a festival in this situation. I agree it's good to get out for fresh air, but not to a crowded festival. A walk, visit to quiet local park etc would be better. I'd be mortified if I bumped into someone from work while off sick at a festival! Blush

MichelleScarn · 15/07/2023 09:48

Agree with the going back on Monday absolutely go to the festival!

Exasperatednow · 15/07/2023 09:48

Yes it is.d

swayingpalmtree · 15/07/2023 09:52

If you’re going back Monday then it’s fine.

It would look a bit odd to go to a crowded festival if come Monday you are too sick to work however. People have mentioned stress but you weren’t signed off with stress, you were signed off with a chest infection which implies you were too physically ill to work. Therefore, not really the same thing at all.

RoobarbandCustud · 15/07/2023 10:58

If you've been off all week going back on Monday; and feel up to it, a short walk to the local park to eat s snack on the grass for an hour would probably do you good, phased return to full function, and is absolutely justified. The risk is that people from work may not see it this way if they had a horrendous day yesterday covering for you. What are the chances of being seen?

Overthebow · 15/07/2023 11:00

If you’re going back to work on Monday then it’s fine.
