Takeaways (col)

Omg on diet so not been getting takeaways, thought would treat children to takeaway as oh away and I'll just get few chips for me to save cooking.

Can't believe the prices of things and that's before factoring in delivery costs and the 30% mark up places seem to add to be in Uber/just eat.

Large chips £4.40-£4.70
Kids meals £4.99

Actually quite shocked.

Having to reduce the order and I'll have a toasted, promised kids so don't want to disappoint them.

Phone the takeaway directly and that way you can have something that avoids the mark up? Or go pick it up if thats an option?

SackOfShitandRegrets · 13/07/2023 17:48

Thanks for reply x

Unfortunately not possible - delivery is 5.26 market place and fee - I understand they need to charge to deliver - what grates is the mark up on the food as well:(

Stuff is expensive now, it's probably shot up for pick up too. I got a portion of chips, jumbo battered sausage, small plain sausage the other day and it was a tenner! A few months ago it would have been about £6 if that.

I was surprised at the cost of fish and chips at a new place local to us; it seems like a takeaway is now fairly similar to the cost of eating out

Mumtothreegirlies · 13/07/2023 17:59

Just checked my local fish and chips and large chips is £4.25 but to be fair is huge and feeds all 5 of us chip wise.

5 people?!

Thewarrioress · 13/07/2023 18:04

A large chip feeds one of us or 2 of the smallest.

Sausage supper is £5.50 here. Used to be £4.50. And a large chip is now £3.50!

Exactly!

Like McDonald's is the same now as say a harvester or beefeater

I'm not sure about that. We ate out the other week at Pizza Express. I'm not a big drinker so had one glass of wine. We shared 2 starters, 3 pizzas and they shared a pudding. It was close to £120 for the 3 of us. Delivery on the Pizza Express app is always cheaper.

Yes prices have increased so much here too. I think fish and chips is £11 now. Almost double the price it was pre COVID.

gogomoto · 13/07/2023 18:34

A kids meal for £4.99 is very cheap! They are £7.50 at our local chippy, it's £4 for large chips, £12.50 for cod and chips. They don't do delivery. If you want delivery it's domino's or Indian food only

Feel bit better but it's 3 nuggets or 3 fish fingers about dozen chips and 200ml of orange squash

But you could easily be paying about £10 for McDonald's with Big Mac or Angus burger with fries and drink - Wetherspoons or harvester is only about £2 more but nicer

I think prices are crazily high across the board. In the petrol station by me that sells M and S food,2 prawn sandwiches are over a fiver and a tiny pack of sushi is £6! At least we will all be getting thinner from having no treats 😂

"But you could easily be paying about £10 for McDonald's with Big Mac or Angus burger with fries and drink"

Could you? 🤔 a Big Mac meal and a happy meal comes to less than a tenner. A Big Mac meal is just over £6. You can also get a saver meal for £3.99 now so that's one adult and 2 kids for £10.

treacledan71 · 16/07/2023 04:56

We don't have many takeaways but if we have Chinese go to one that delivers direct for 2.00 or collect. 3 of us but just get set meal for one. I do some extra rice, just a 49p aldi microwave one and a small extra dish with say frozen 250g chicken and some frozen stir fry I have in with a 50p aldi sauce. Works out about 14.00 all in. Sometimes do a few oven chips in air fryer. Thought would do just eat as had a 5.00 off voucher. Cldnt believe it was 4.99 just for rice. I remember when a main meal was that much. Stuck with local one in end worked out cheaper. As everyone said things are just getting mad.

SuffolkUnicorn · 16/07/2023 05:11

I don’t eat takeaways but I get them for my child and partner and I agree the prices even for a McDonald’s is crazy I remember happy meals being 1.99 for a long time now you might aswell buy the extra value meal. Dominos charge 24.99 for a Pizza Hut if you collect it’s 7/8.99 I will always collect and even then it’s overpriced but I get it if my son and partner fancy it.

we went to the beach yesterday and one large one regular chips and a plain sausage the size of two thimbles was 7.20

A big mac meal is £6.39 and happy meals are £2.99.

I agree Burger King and their Angus meals are stupidly expensive. I looked on the menu recently and some burgers were over £10 for a meal deal.

SackOfShitandRegrets · 16/07/2023 06:59

Happy meals are 3.39 or 3.89 if delivered, big max meal 6.49 or 7.29 delivered.

I get the junior chicken mayo that was 99p but now 1.19 or 1.49 delivered

I remember too when happy meals were 1.99

It used to be a cheap treat but now not cheap and not filling, def not a dinner meal just a lunch really

It costs more through Uber Eats etc because the platforms charge the restaurant this amount as commission. If they didn't mark up, they couldn't afford to sell through them.

I'm quite surprised how many people on MN are happy to use Uber Eats and Deliveroo tbh as they're very exploitative of both the restaurants and the delivery people and MN are usually against that sort of thing, judging by the comments against Amazon and Shein etc.

We never get food delivered, it's just not worth the extra cost, but I understand the attraction if you're home alone with DC and it saves you all going out to collect it. We will pick it up on the way home from the supermarket, or go to the fish and chip shop or kebab place in walking distance, and also order carefully to not get too much food, so will get a main each and share a portion of chips, which is plenty for two, for example.

gogomoto · 16/07/2023 07:09

@Karrpt

McDonald's has gone up a lot in the past year, from £4.79 to £6.59 for a big mac meal, happy meals are £3.59 so no not less than a tenner. I bought it last week for 3 adults and it was just under £20

Cheaper is to buy off the saver menu and not buy drinks, but no good if you are out. We don't have delivery here so we only buy it out. Personally I buy the wrap of the day at £1.99, I fool myself into thinking it's better for me Grin
