Can anyone suggest a light easy to drink champagne please? I love cliquot but it's a bit out of my price range at the moment.

Waitrose

They do small bottles just right for a couple of glasses for one.

Have you tried Cremant instead? The Burgundy equivalent, and rather cheaper.

Aldi! Their own is £12.99 and nicer than some of the expensive ones I've had.

Second this

I agree with cremant. Waitrose sells a lovely biscuity Cremant de Limoux.

Bookish88 · 11/07/2023 18:08

If you can't afford a decent champagne right now, have you considered an English sparkling wine?

BillyNoM8s · 11/07/2023 18:09

Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut Cava is alright for a tenner.

Shall add this to my sampling list...

I third Cremant....much less expensive than champagne and some of them are excellent.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/07/2023 18:22

Another vote for cremant!

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 11/07/2023 18:27

Cremant de Limoux from Waitrose is lovely.

thinkfast · 11/07/2023 18:28

Fourth Cremant.

blahblahblah1654 · 12/07/2023 10:58

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Looks like I should give Cremant a try. @MrsDanversGlidesAgain I remember loving the Waitrose one so I might get that again. @Bookish88 I haven't tried many English sparking wines but I wasn't massively keen on the ones I did try for some reason.

Tesco do a own brand lovely champagne. I also like the Aldi one.

Worldgonecrazy · 12/07/2023 11:21

I would second the English Sparkling Wines. I love Bride Valley, Nyetimber and Furleigh.

I would definitely go for either English or a Cremant, or even Prosecco above cheap low quality Champagne.

WhiskersPete · 12/07/2023 11:30

I second English sparkling wines. Balfour Leslie's Reserve Brut is delicious - light, biscuity.

Much nicer than most supermarket branded champagne. Most I've had over the last few years have been really disappointing and I'm not buying it anymore.

WhiskersPete · 12/07/2023 11:32

Just to point out by supermarket champagne I'm including Moet, Bollinger etc. It all seems to have declined in quality.

soupmaker · 12/07/2023 11:35

ALDI's cremant de Bordeaux is fantastic and really good value for money. You'll get two for under £20.

Ohyoudodoyou · 12/07/2023 11:44

I love Veuve Clicquot too
But this is my go to at other times and usually you can get it for about £22 if you shop around.

My friend brought a bottle of Chapel Down with her recently and that was tasty.

It’s a bit more unusual than Cremant, but Franciacorta is amazing. It is very similar to Champagne, with the brioche undertones etc. Mid price champagne - I like Tattinger which is usually a bit cheaper than Veuve and more likely to be on offer. Otherwise, for a cheap easy drinking champagne, I like Nicholas Feuillette (often on offer in Tesco) and Charles Lafitte (often half price on Ocado - don’t buy if full price!) DH really likes Tesco finest (more than the expensive ones) but I’m not such a fan.

Moet is horrible - my least favourite champagne. Bollinger is quite nice - but overpriced for the quality. Would buy only if on offer.

bostonchamps · 12/07/2023 12:11

The big champagne houses seem to be churning out pisswster now, I think the weather in northern France over the last ten years has really dented quality.

Cremant is delicious and I fifth/second the PPs who mentioned Waitrose and Aldi.

I'm also a big fan of Lambrusco
