How do you pronounce 'croissant'?

It's probably the only word that I can feel myself thinking about pronunciation as I begin the sentence. There are so many different pronunciations.

  1. The French way - my preferred way as I do speak French quite well. Nonetheless, I doubt myself, especially if I'm in the company of people I don't know very well. Will I sound pretentious or silly?
  2. Cwoss-ont
  3. Cwass-ont
  4. Cross-ont
  5. Crass-ont
  6. Cwazz-ont
  7. Cwozz-ont
  8. Any of (2)-(8) with an 'ant' sound at the end instead of 'ont'.
  9. Another pronunciation

And yes, before anyone says it, I could've used IPA to write these pronunciations. But I haven't, because I don't want to and I'll enjoy any misunderstandings which arise in the comments.

Number 3

... which I think is wrong, but I;ve been saying like that for so long, I find it hard to change.

I think number 4 is correct. (maybe)

soakinboakin · 11/07/2023 11:09

I say 2

Stichintime · 11/07/2023 11:10

I don't find it's a word I have to say often! If I did it would be 4

Pinkywoo · 11/07/2023 11:10

3

JenniferBarkley · 11/07/2023 11:10

I think I say it differently every bloody time. Grin

OchonAgusOchonOh · 11/07/2023 11:11

Somewhere between 2 and 3. My French is crap though.

madeinmanc · 11/07/2023 11:11

Any that pronounce the final "t" are wrong for speakers of British English (Americans, however, do pronounce the final "t").

Pinkywoo · 11/07/2023 11:11

To start the confusion IPA is Indian pale ale to me! Grin

imapterodactyl · 11/07/2023 11:12

Cwass-on I think? I've just said it to myself so many times it's become meaningless

madeinmanc · 11/07/2023 11:12

British English = "kwa-son"

Hoppinggreen · 11/07/2023 11:13

1 but I don’t roll my R as much as I would if I was in France
Pan au chocolat is another minefield as is paella and chorizo
I tend to use the correct pronunciation but “dumb” it down a bit

MouseSculptureMadeOfOldHairbrushFluff · 11/07/2023 11:13

Number 2 I think. Frenchish but not overly French so that I'd feel like a dick.

You missed out the American pronunciation cross-ONT.

Superdupes · 11/07/2023 11:13

Between two and three.

What is the French way? You sounded all the others out but not that way for some reason? It's pretty hard to know if you'll sound pretentious if we plebs don't know how the French say it.

sallyfacts · 11/07/2023 11:14

No final 't' sound, definitely. So none from the OP.

YoureRockingTheBoat · 11/07/2023 11:14

I feel your pain. I pronounce it in a way which a) cannot be understood by the person I want to give me the croissant; and b) makes DH fall about laughing. But I cannot for the life of me hear where I’m going wrong or do anything about it.

Mmmmdanone · 11/07/2023 11:14

I've recently been saying it in a very exaggerated French way. Don't know why but there you go 🤣

MidnightMeltdown · 11/07/2023 11:14

I think that 4 is generally the British pronunciation. The French would use 3.

madeinmanc · 11/07/2023 11:15

I must say that I've never heard someone in this country pronounce it with the final "t".

evtheria · 11/07/2023 11:15

I call it a 'crozza' (kroz-zah).

How do you pronounce 'croissant'?
Alltheusernamesaretakennow · 11/07/2023 11:15

Same as you, would always try (1) .
(9) - other pronunciation - my brother was visiting Australia and asked for a croissant. The lady didn't understand, and eventually said "Oh, you mean a croy-sant!"

sallyfacts · 11/07/2023 11:16

I missed your 'the French way'. Closest to that. No final 't' sound.

TeleTropes · 11/07/2023 11:16

kwass-on with no final ‘t’ but not a nasal French ending

IMustDoMoreExercise · 11/07/2023 11:16

3

BillyNoM8s · 11/07/2023 11:17

I say cr'sson. The n is soft.

Chypre · 11/07/2023 11:18

I would like to think I say it The French Way. But most likely I end up with "qua-so"...
