How does the BBC get out of the presenter mess?

1000 replies

mids2019 · 11/07/2023 07:13

Seriously how does the BBC now go forward and what can be the conclusion to this story? The story could run for some time with on going speculation about the presenter and eventually in my opinion a name will drop.

Can there therefore be any sort of fair investigation because I think there may be too much aspirational damage now for a career to be as ed. It seems the knives the BBC sit on this the more scrutiny there is and they desperately need a conclusion?

I hope the climax of it all happens soon as it is pushing all the really important stories off the news agenda.

How do you know how much, if any casual sex the 20 year old had? And does it matter?

The general assumption is that it must be happening on Grindr. People who go on that app can't pretend to be all sweet and innocent.

Viviennemary · 11/07/2023 17:10

The whole thing is a total mess. Now somebody else has come forward with a complaint against this person.

Pretty sure you in a very small group of people who don't know how to google, yes 😂

Weirdly I'd guessed who it was but now confirmed, every time I googled it just went to MSM which wasn't giving much

It is illegal to send or receive sexualised images of children under 18. It’s a criminal offence.

Add to that it has been proven that he has sent abusive and threatening messages to another young person. Which is also an offence - especially if there is imbalance of power and influence between them.

There is no way he can make a public apology and expect to ever have a job back!
He might be given a custodial sentence if he is charged. I don’t think you have understood the gravity - the aggravating feature being clearly this involves a minor (at least one)

We don't know if anything was sent by an under 18 though. That hasn't been confirmed.

He's obviously out of a job. That was always going to be the case. There's no coming back from this drama.

ConkerDreams · 11/07/2023 17:13

I feel sorry for him at the moment. Probably feeling desperate having been closeted all his life. These sites exist for a reason… it’s not like he groomed someone with no agency. The person threatened to out him online, how awful… no wonder he got angry.

How he could take such risks is beyond me. Absolute madness … but maybe he had some sort of breakdown and he was in self destruct mode. Perhaps he felt like his whole life was a sham and he just wanted to blow it all up. He’s certainly achieved that.

I thought I read something about Snapchat earlier.

Grindr definitely isn't for those seeking a handhold.

When I google BBC presenter I get a suggestion "people also search for [name of the presenter everyone thinks it is ] '

I’m not sure where everyone is getting the information that the young person in question is male, everything I’ve read that specifies a gender states ‘she’. Even a statement/quote from the parents referred to a daughter…

This is total bollocks though, isn't it?

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2023 17:17

I know this is a serious matter , but Grindr not being a hand hold made me lol !
( I've heard of it , but I don't go near any of these sites !)

I've just looked again and still don't get any names just the coverage of the story in general, mmm.... The Tattle suggestion up thread confirmed my thoughts though, sad

StefanosHill · 11/07/2023 17:19

Well it’s a wake up call for ‘talent’ in major media jobs. It’ll bite you on the bum and that’s it

watermeloncougar · 11/07/2023 17:20

I guess one thing that the lawyers will need to clarify asap is that these messages did indeed come from this particular presenter. If they were from a work device, did anyone else have access to that number?

If it's the presenter who's being widely named, I gather from people who've worked with him that's he's not universally popular at the Beeb and there are colleagues who would happily see him brought down.

What a sorry mess.

My gay dating friend confirms it is absolute filth, lots of arranging "in-public" hook ups. People who are HIV+ but on medication seeking casual, unprotected sex. It's illuminating, to say the least.

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2023 17:23

If someone else used his phone as revenge , how do you prove it? Cctv footage ?
Alibis? Tracking devices ?
The plot thickens even more ( if this is a theory the might use to defend himself )

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2023 17:25

Grindr sounds grim.
I appreciate how green I must sound , but how sordid is this world we live in.

There is a weird twitter thread which has a dude in his 30s I think sharing communication where it appears the man in question jumped into his DMs in a weird manner- flirty perhaps. peculiarly for a celeb vs the publics first contact

Ofc it's possible that the man who posted it is skirting for attention and if it's fake I imagine he's gonna get sued but if it's genuine this presenter is arrogant enough to think common sense doesn't apply to his interactions with the public

Did you see the name of that poster? I couldn't take it seriously when I noticed that ...

Saucery · 11/07/2023 17:26

I wonder why they don’t like him? 🤔

watermeloncougar · 11/07/2023 17:26

@the80sweregreat I've no idea! But seeing as there was no meet up, just messages, I mean anyone can say they're anyone in a message can't they? I hope a thorough investigation will give answers though.

Can you share the statement / quote where they say 'daughter'?

Green or just homophobic? There’s nothing grim about a gay dating site even if it’s primarily used for casual hook-ups. It’s none of anyone else’s business provided everyone using it is over 18.

That’s the only real issue here, that the young person was under 18 when it started. The rest is the morality police wagging fingers.

dancinginthesky · 11/07/2023 17:28

@RedToothBrush ah yeah. Someone has also pointed out it looks like it has been faked as certain things have been scrubbed from the profile that should've still been there on the date he claimed it was received. I don't know if the guy changed his name overnight but I didn't see his name as that (might've just not paid attention) yesterday

Seems he's up for being sued.

The child’s parents seem to have evidence he was 17 when it happened. We will have to wait and see.

Lots of these highly paid people are hated on
I read a thread about Vernon Kay and how nobody likes him the other day. Of course , it's hard to know what's true, but it seems the higher you go and the more you earn the more they hate you. Sad really
I agree that someone may have used his phone to get him in some deep do do
It's easy done I suppose.
So much to wade through
