How does the BBC get out of the presenter mess?

1000 replies

mids2019 · 11/07/2023 07:13

Seriously how does the BBC now go forward and what can be the conclusion to this story? The story could run for some time with on going speculation about the presenter and eventually in my opinion a name will drop.

Can there therefore be any sort of fair investigation because I think there may be too much aspirational damage now for a career to be as ed. It seems the knives the BBC sit on this the more scrutiny there is and they desperately need a conclusion?

@Blossomtoes utterly confused where you got the idea I made any assumptions over your age 🤷‍♀️... I explained why I don't think it's as simple as taking a young adults word for it that it was all rubbish from my personal experience of what I experienced

None of my statements have made any assumptions about yourself

IClaudine · 11/07/2023 16:41

Yep, the BBC can get rid now. Was it a work phone, I wonder? What an idiot.

BillyNoM8s · 11/07/2023 16:42

He's clearly not very tech savvy. Or a complete narc. Or both.

Using a number that your employer has on file... Revealing your identity to random Gen Z's online... Why do these older, closeted famous ones never strike up a love affair with each other?!

I won't be surprised if both incidents are blackmail related. Maybe person 1 was happy being silenced with ££ and then the parents found out...

Person 2 seemingly failed to extract any money, just got abuse when threatening exposure. Guess they'll be getting paid for their story now!

Media need to stop drip feeding though. Report properly or not until all facts are in.

I really feel for presenters spouse and children, if they have any.

Maybe MPs should stick to running the country.

Maybe a few MPs need to check their behaviour over the last so many years.

WeWereInParis · 11/07/2023 16:43

The young person threatened to out him. That’s blackmail.

Surely blackmail would be "I'm going to out you unless you give me money"

On its own "I'm going to out you" isn't blackmail, but it is an unpleasant threat.

Madamecholetsbonnet · 11/07/2023 16:44

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2023 16:40

The young person threatened to out him. That’s blackmail.

My mistake. I honestly thought that for it to be blackmail, you have to say “give me x/do y, or I will tell Poirot you are the murderer”

I didn’t realise it was blackmail to just state a fact for no reward and with no threatening actions attached.

ConstanceWorry · 11/07/2023 16:45

This is shocking. He seemed such a nice solid chap. 🙄

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2023 16:19

Where do you get the idea they’re sex workers @dancinginthesky?

If they are selling nude pics that's defined as sex work.

Juanmartinez · 11/07/2023 16:45

I didn't say blackmail is ok , I said it's a risk .

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/07/2023 16:45

kirinm · 11/07/2023 16:21

So he's using similar sites / the same site stupidly but not illegally. And people are effectively blackmailing him and he gets angry about it. That's not surprising and it wouldn't be surprising if the same thing happened with individual 1.

Yeah, again, I don't see what he has does illegally. Stupid maybe but it's his personal life and then these "victims" are blackmailing him so he got angry. Big deal

NashvilleQueen · 11/07/2023 16:46

It's hard to imagine at this point we arent hearing only a fraction of what has gone on.

Darkmodeison · 11/07/2023 16:46

Am I the only person with no idea who it is or how to find out?

Assuming that young person B was 18, it's very unpleasant to out them and I'm not surprised it was met with anger. Thats uncalled for.

But then again, if he has a wife and children then he's wrong to be doing that anyway... still public naming and shaming is wrong

WeWereInParis · 11/07/2023 16:47

I don't see what he has does illegally.

I suppose it depends how threatening his messages were.

Blackmail seems likely doesn't it?

Why does a married man 'of advancing age' in the public eye in a job of considerable prestige think it's a good idea to message young people in their teens and 20s with threatening messages?

Never mind the sexual element to this.

It's just the 'wtf were they thinking?' dipshitness of it.

It's not a situation you accidentally find yourself in.

So I find myself having zero sympathy.

StormShadow · 11/07/2023 16:48

Well this has turned into quite the drama.

ConstanceWorry · 11/07/2023 16:48

Darkmodeison · 11/07/2023 16:46

🤣 Google tattle BBC presenter

Apparently not the only gay in the village.

kirinm · 11/07/2023 16:49

Unless we find out there is some illegality here, I feel quite sorry for the guy. It's seedy but these sites exist and people use them.

Why or why people with SO much to lose would do shit like this is beyond me though. Surely they must realise that one day, someone is going to be paid enough to out them or at least threaten it?

AdamRyan · 11/07/2023 16:49

If you have sex with someone, it's ok for them to tell people. Of course people are going to say if they got picked up by someone famous! And today the kids put their whole lives on SM.

Having sex with someone comes with risks, one of which is they might talk about it. I don't think this second person has done anything wrong!

Translucentwaters · 11/07/2023 16:49

We have a second person now and it’s very likely there will be many more, the BBC are screwed now.

His preference is clearly for teens. What a terrible shame for those poor kids being exploited like this. Which is looking increasingly likely.

vera99 · 11/07/2023 16:50

He may have had a breakdown / drug habit that has awoken repressed gay tendencies, and he joined a dating app unwisely and was threatened with being outed. We are hardly in Saville territory here by a long shot. I feel sorry for him and his family. He should probably out himself, express regret for his actions and the impact it has had on his family and the BBC and any young men involved request time out to seek help and ask for forgiveness and after a period of time do a mea culpa interview and come back to work.

RedToothBrush · 11/07/2023 16:51

If he has a BBC contract he may well have terms and conditions relating to his conduct and personal behaviour - and bringing the BBC into disrepute.

I think that ship has sailed.

If he ceases to be an employee then it becomes in the public interest to report if he has abused his position of power. So BBC are also duty bound to name him at that point.

Either why we will be knowing his name soon.

(If you haven't already sussed it. And if you haven't sussed it, which rock do you live under?)

greencheetah · 11/07/2023 16:52

There’s no evidence of blackmail so far. Not sure why people are saying that.

Agree the presenter sounds like an arrogant narcissist. I wonder how long he has been doing this and how many more young men will surface with similar experiences.

He didn't just sleep his friends, sounds like he was going to social media. That's not the same thing. If somebody went on SM to share details of sex with me, I would be retry pissed

I think it's also the faux surprise that he'd react that way

I don't want to defend this person though, without knowing the details. But speaking generally, no, you don't just go and blast it from the rooftops (to thousands) that you slept with XYZ

Still abuse of power like Schofield.

And Schofield went. Quite rightly

Doesn't matter if nothing illegal happened. Still a big deal now.
