Sofas on repayment plan

Hi I wasn't sure where to post this so I've ended up here. Please could I possibly not have any negative comments about my situation. Since my split from my husband I have been left with one sofa which is practically dead, its falling apart completely. I am now on benefits, I know how much money I could afford monthly but I don't have the money to pay outright for a new sofa. Does anyone know of any sofa companies that will let you buy one and put it on a payment plan. I know that a lot of companies might say no because I'm on benefits. I just wondered if anyone knows which companies I could try so as to not ruin my credit rating. I just want my home to be nice thanks in advance.

They wil do it all through a credit check, so it depends on that really.

Have you tried British Heart Foundation? They used to have shops that sold really good secondhand furniture. Failing that get on Facebook marketplace or Freecycle. Anything but get yourself into debt

Free cycle or local selling/give away sites. If you are on benefits (or even if you aren’t to be honest) the last thing you need is to owe people money

As a pp has said, some charity shops sell furniture. Worth poking round a few in case you find something suitable, might save you some £££.

DFS definitely do. I pay £50 pm for mine. We were first time buyers and wanted to spread the payments as we had lots of different things we needed to buy. We did pay a deposit too but I can’t remember how much it was.

Would never get a sofa basically on loan. Always get ours from Facebook buy and sell sites or gumtree and after viewing it I've either got a family member to collect or hired man with a van. Always reasonable this way and the amount of times we've got a brilliant deal of people who only had it as a spare sofa in a different room

You need to set that money aside monthly for a while and then use it to buy outright. No-one on benefits should be getting in to debt for a sofa. It’s irresponsible lending for a start.
We are considered to be on a good income (over £75k) and we have secondhand sofas!

I have four sofas- including an heirloom, one £50 from Facebook marketplace and the most recent 380 from brand alley. Look around and get it on PayPal- 3 or 4 months in street free instalments.

yes, i got 2 sofas from dfs on 0% interest over 4 years £20 per month. I have nearly finished paying for them, good luck.

I got ours from DFS and paid monthly. But make sure you can afford the repayments and don't leave yourself short. As with benefits there are often times you get less than expected or delayed payments so you need a buffer.

I also recommend second hand, charity shops are best if you don't drive as many offer a delivery service. Or Facebook, olio, gumtree. Our first 2 sofas cost £40 each and were great and we passed them on when we got our new one.

Hi I do get everyone's point about not getting into debt for a sofa, I'm agoraphobic, I don't go outside so I can't trawl around the charity shops. I've never been on market place so I will have a look there first. Thanks for all the replies x

With huge kindness do not get yourself into debt for this.

Do you have friends or family who can help you look in charity shops? Lots near me sell sofas and deliver too.

Have you asked if friends and family know of anyone getting rid of one- of course you have the stress of finding transport for it and need to factor that in.

Also keep a eye on local charities Facebook pages. Many advertise their furniture.

There are charities that can help too. Do you have any support workers or mental health support that can do a glasspools application?

I just bought new ones from dfs. I pay monthly as it's interest free credit even though I could afford to buy them outright.

We used DFS it’s 0% interest but I’d be a bit cautious about the monthly payments if you’re receiving benefits

Hi @CornishTiger unforunately my family aren't close. My husband left last year and I'm now on benefits. I'm on a waiting list(been on it for 8 months already)for talking therapies. I have no idea what a glasspool application is? Thanks for being kind. I didn't want to get a bashing xx

Don’t disregard eBay. I got a fabulous lightly used second-hand Sofa Workshop 3-seater for £100. Retailed for about ten times that much at the time. Still going strong after more than a decade. I doubt you’ll be saying that about a DFS sofa.

I mean this as kindly as I know how: please don’t get into debt when you’re only income is benefits

Agoraphobia is rough OP, I feel for you.

I got my two Ikea sofas sight unseen from Facebook/Gumtree sellers, paid hardly anything. I buy new covers for them every few years and they’re still going strong. Sometimes I think I’d like a change but they’re just so comfy!

I’m also repeating others’ advice to definitely not go into debt! But get to know your local selling sites. You may well find that there’s a bit of a community attached, a reliable (wo)man with a van or two, people who can give you good advice. And most likely there’s advice you can give to others too. Just ignore the inevitable drama 😉
