Where are all the magazines for teenage girls?

Shelves seem to be full of every kind of of magazine except for any for teenagers.
I used to love the magazines like Sugar, Mizz, Just 17 and More. Now they jump straight from sparkle world to Heat.
is there really no market for them because all the 12-16 year olds are on their phones?

I used to love Bliss and Sugar magazine - truly aspirational living!

Gatoraid · 05/07/2023 23:38

Oh yes-Bliss as well!
Seriously they taught me everything about boys, make up, friends, fashion…
I guess everything that they use tiktok for now but god knows what else they are looking at alongside those things!

I know! I was looking for something for my 13 yr old in Sainsbury’s today. It goes from Peppa pig to Cosmopolitan with nothing in between!

God they were such bollocks. Making us think that boy, make up and fashion were so important. So glad they died a deserved death sadly I doubt girls are directed to anything else much more inspiring just now all online.

Ambi · 05/07/2023 23:42

It's called FYP on Tiktok. Personalised content with loads of ads thrown in.

LittleMonks11 · 05/07/2023 23:53

I'll start one up. I have a DD11. What should be in it? List your topics.

Juliasmama · 06/07/2023 00:08

Shout was a favourite of mine, think it's still going..

Calloffruity · 06/07/2023 00:13

Teens aren't in the slightest bit interested in magazines anymore

MeinKraft · 06/07/2023 01:17

Was More! The one with position of the week Confused I used to read it as a young teen!

Do you not get the beano in shops anymore?

just wanted to say thank you for the reminder of all the mags I used to read, happy memories.

Assume they’re all on phones/tablets.

Gatoraid · 06/07/2023 06:36

But why are magazines for other demographics so prolific? Surely all the crap about ‘my neighbour stole my baby’ etc is also online?

I'd love to see a different kind of teen mag, not about makeup and boys (🤮) but more educating in a fun way. I did read those mags when I was younger but telling teens how to eat to stay and vilifying celebs was all kinds of wrong

HaddawayAndShite · 06/07/2023 06:42

In the 90s where that misogynistic shite should stay

Caradonna · 06/07/2023 06:43

I’m amazed there are any mags for sale still but there are dozens - Home design is a big thing.
I think they would read a magazine if there was one. One that included stuff about music /songwriters so you actually get the chance to read about something that isn’t Tik Tok/social media led.
Also fashion, saving the planet, health.

BillyNoM8s · 06/07/2023 06:45

I used to love a magazine, but they definitely were all full of boys, sex and make up.

I read some really eye watering stuff. But I was, therefore, also much more worldly than many of the teens I encounter these days.

Today's teens don't seem to deal with paper.

liveforsummer · 06/07/2023 06:54

You might still be able to buy them online - similarly the shelves used to have a range of child/teen horse and pony mags but now there are none but you can get one that delivers monthly that you can order online. No where near the choice there used to be though.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/07/2023 06:59

Magazines are basically dead now. No interesting articles . No real life stories. Just interviews with idiots no one cares about and advertising. Cos all we need is a plastic surgeon advert and reviews on expensive creams.

It would be nice of teens could read about how to study hard, how they dont need make up or surgery and 50 ways to give an amazing blow job.

Tyrionapproach · 06/07/2023 06:59

Most of those magazines have long since gone bust. Sign up to Libby through your local public library or get a Readiy subscription for a couple of months to see what's left.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 06/07/2023 07:05

They should bring back Smash Hits! That was my favourite magazine as a young teen - no boys/make up stuff, but so funny. Posters, interviews, song lyrics....good innocent fun!
If J17 and More were around today I certainly wouldn't be letting dd read them....

This has made me feel a bit sad - we really could do with a new teen mag with fresh content that they want to read.

I have a 12 year old who still read the Week Junior every week but obviously I am on borrowed time and then will be in the
Social media trap where we can't control what crap they are fed.
Magazines are still enjoyable in tablet form.

Mind you I do agree with PP my voracious reading of Mizz and Just 17 wasn't that wholesome in retrospect!

Tighginn · 06/07/2023 07:06

In the 90's...

fruitpastille · 06/07/2023 07:08

It's not Just 17 but I did find quite a nice magazine for DD called Teen Breathe. It does encourage introspection but pretty wholesome overall. About how to deal with feelings/ anxiety etc. Baking and craft ideas.

OrTheBearsWillGetYou · 06/07/2023 07:08

Teens’ mags were just for fun, for distraction. They get that online now. The crap on TikTok and YouTube just shows what teens actually want to watch and read.

The sad truth is that a mag covering subjects like saving the planet, health or anything else worthwhile would go bust after one issue.

KiwiMum2023 · 06/07/2023 07:08

Teen Breathe is lovely though very far from Just 17!
