Has anyone else had any stupid injuries lately?

I tried to squash a small tin of Heinz beans to put it in the recycling and my thumb split open. I didn't even cut it on the lid, it just burst open from the pressure. It took over an hour and a half before it stopped bleeding. Now it's bloody painful.

I'm thinking of suing Heinz for trauma,(Not really)

Has anyone else done anything similarly foolish?

To add to my previous post, the surgeon did warn me that I would have a zigzag scar on my hand. I thought 'Cool, it will look like Harry Potter's'. It is an L shape as in L for Loser. Not cool.

Not really an injury but a definite case of stupidity.

I have stupidly ignored pain in my thigh/knee for the last 9 years, just putting up with it while it got steadily worse.

Finally got round to seeing someone and had my first physio treatment session today now I'm in so much pain after the woman with 83 knuckles took all her frustrations out on my poor poor leg.

Can I ask what they think caused your pain?

For a few months now I have pain in my thigh/hip that sort of radiates into my knee. Feels a bit like it is being squeezed. Much worse when lying down but even lying on the non sore side hurts!

Nickknackpattywhack · 05/07/2023 21:46

I opened the bedroom door onto my foot (which had no slippers on it) and ripped my little toe-nail off.
That was 3 weeks ago and I still can't get some shoes on, it's so sore.

Putting camp beds together in May half-term and managed to drop a metal pole across the bridge of my nose. Had a swollen bruised nose all week, hurt to wear sunglasses. I can still feel it now if I press it.

I poked myself in the lip with an interdental toothbrush end this morning (they're spikey so you can scrape plaque away) and now I have a very uncomfortable scratch on my lip.

You and me both!!

LollipopViolet · 05/07/2023 22:11

Back in October I did one of those inflatable 5k obstacle courses. On the final slide thought I was going to hit someone so tried to use my feet to scoot myself over a bit as I went down. Right ankle rolled outwards, and my foot ended up underneath me.

Grade 3 sprain, possible Achilles tendon involvement, and 6 months before it got back to normal, with a lot of pain along the way.

All from a stupid inflatable slide...

chocspot · 05/07/2023 22:15

I fell off the edge of the decking and scraped both knees, my ankle and my elbow. Not even sure how it happened!

I also regularly get huge bruises on my thigh from walking in to a metal trolley that we keep in the corridor at work.

CeliaCanth · 05/07/2023 22:18

Trying to get the cats in (they had escaped through a window onto the roof) I whacked my head on a chest of drawers and gave myself a black eye. Had to go round for a few days looking like I’d been in a fight.

YorkieTheRabbit · 05/07/2023 22:21

I’ve got a large bruise on my forearm, it’s been there nearly two weeks.
One of our dogs has a habit of laying in doorways.
Rather than tell her to move, I tried to walk around her, caught my sleeve on the door handle, swung round, jolted my back them somehow managed to bang my arm again. It bloody hurt.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/07/2023 22:22

This isn't recent...about 7 years ago.

DH has a model railway. The track pieces have joins which are thin strips of metal.

I caught my wrist on one of these. Bit of minor bleeding, nothing serious. But all these years later I still have a very obvious scar on my wrist, in the "optimal" diagonal position across the veins/arteries of my wrist.

SacreBlue · 05/07/2023 22:23

Had a pistachio related incident once, index fingernail wrecked.

When I pointed it straight out, & used my middle fingernail instead, I managed to make it through the rest of the bag though <phew!>

And, cause shelling them that way felt/looked a bit ‘posh’ I also felt a bit like Margo Leadbetter so that made me feel better as did the massive bag of pistachios despite the ‘incident’

@Tulipvase they've diagnosed it as IT Band Tendonitis, also called Illiotibal Band syndrome. The tight band of tendon running along the side of the thigh and attaching/interacting with quads and hamstring gets stiff and tight and swollen so rubs against knee joint. I have stretches and a really uncomfortable exercise where I have to balance on a foam roller on my side with feet suspended in the air and roll back and forth so it pushes into the muscle (fat, unfit and lacking in an balance or gracefulness so that goes well) that I have to do twice a day, then once a week the physio digs her knuckles in and breaks up the stiffness and then twists my leg and hips into inhuman positions while telling me 'this will hurt later'. I think she enjoys it, she's a very petite and deceptively sweet looking person, with a mean streak!

PollyThePixie · 05/07/2023 22:31

Yes. Two.

A bruise on my eyebrow where I dropped my iPad on my face when watching something in bed.

Then there’s my sore back from stumbling when standing up and putting my pants on after my recent knee replacement instead of sitting down. In order to save my new knee and my wound I did some kind of demented highland fling that meant I travel a few steps across the bedroom and ricocheted off my wardrobe.

The day my commode collapsed under me after the same op shall never be mentioned in full and neither will the square that had to be cut out of my bedroom carpet and hosed down in the garden in order to get the wee out of it. I’m still extremely pleased with my decision to only ever use the commode for a wee and to have it emptied each time I did.

Shannith · 05/07/2023 22:33

This week..

Walked into the a rose bush narrowly missing my eye. Iced it. Felt bruise emerging.

Went back into the garden, ducked this time but not enough and it got me on the other side.

10 mins later while actually thinking duck properly this time, didn't duck at all and it hit me on the forehead. I've chopped the offending branch off now. Finally.

Riding today. Observed they had cut down a load of overhanging branches but not the spiky branch of death that you really have to duck to avoid.

Normally you have to duck the whole way but because I only had to duck once I didn't really duck at all and it got me on my arm, scratching me and leaving a bruise.

I'm clearly really shit at ducking. And learning.

TheForgetfulCat · 05/07/2023 22:38

A really irritatingly sore, twinging and swollen middle finger top joint, resulting from ... pulling on a sock.

Apparently sock-related injury is a thing with persons of a certain age.

Moonshine5 · 05/07/2023 22:40

Literally just slashed my thumb trying to open a lollipop with a knife. Don't ask. Blood splatter across the island 😂

Rolypolyfishheads · 05/07/2023 22:45

When I used to work in a bookies I was taking all of the papers out of the display cases. I was doing it really fast like in a whipping them out kind of a way. I did it with one of them and it whipped across my eyeball giving it a paper cut!! Still makes me feel sick thinking about it 🤢

Tessisme · 05/07/2023 22:46

Every so often I catch my pocket on one of the door handles and end up smashing the edge of the door into my face. I did it last week for the gazillionth time.

CountingMareep · 05/07/2023 22:48

I did exactly the same thing as the OP. Tried to squish a baked bean can with my right hand and ended up with a deep cut in the area of skin between my thumb and forefinger. I ended up having the cut glued together with this funny purple stuff, along with some funky shaped dressings. The chap who did it was none other than my friend and neighbour’s DH who just happens to run the minor injuries unit. 😳😂

Worse than that though was way back when DD was a baby. I had been advised to begin weaning her, and was trying to get to grips with my hand blender. I attempted to blend down some cooked carrots but they were a stubbornly woody lot and clogged up the attachment. Like the sleep-deprived fool that I was, I cleared the blades with my finger without detaching the unit or switching off at the wall…

After having my tendon reattached the following day, the nurse giving me the physio advice told me they have at least one injury a week from those gadgets. Makes you wonder if there’s scope for design improvements.

Tilllly · 05/07/2023 22:07

You and me both!!

Makes you feel like a right idiot, doesn't it.

TulipTuesday · 05/07/2023 22:52

I’m usually very good at finding my way to the loo at night, but not last week.

I somehow lost my bearings and walked in to a wall. The most bizarre thing was how my toe made first contact with the wall, but barely a tickle so my head moved down on instinct and it was my cheek bone that got the whack.

The bright green bruise turned a lovely shade of piss yellow before just about clearing up now.

Didn’t even realise my cheekbones were so sharp 💅

Gabby10 · 05/07/2023 22:55

Went to kick my DD's ball earlier and kicked the door with my little toe! Full toe is bruised so pretty sure it's broke Grin

Makegoodchoices · 05/07/2023 22:56

I’m now old enough to wake up with mystery injuries that are bad enough to stop me doing things. Today’s effort is a sprained foot. Literally no idea how I hurt it or how long it’ll take to get better.

Macey78 · 05/07/2023 22:56

Also bean related warming up said beans within the microwave in a takeaway container. Heated for 3 minutes way too long! Went to get the container out and it was floppy due to how hot the beans were tipped corner over my thumb and skin peeled off!!! Scarred for life

KnittedCardi · 05/07/2023 22:56

I picked up a box in the shed that I suspected had a wasps nest in, it did, I dropped it, ran away in a comical manner, tripped over, fell hard on my knees and arms and hands. Have a really sore bruised and swollen knee, scuffed elbows, my wrists are sore, and I jarred my back. Feel like a right idiot.
