How to live like its the 1990s?

Coffeeandcake12 · 05/07/2023 19:17

Inspired by a thread about how people were happier in the 90s, how can I live more like we did in the 90s?
Obviously no Internet, I already don't use social media apart from mumsnet.
But what made the 90s so good that I could recreate for me and my children a bit more?

Start of nineties I was at uni, so have a few barcardi breezers before going out, wearing either combats or jeans/trousers with a skirt over! Go into town, can't be late as not everyone has mobiles to get hold of them, pay £1 to get in somewhere, maybe have the mystery rack of vodka shots in vodka revolution- where one is the chilli vodka (for about £6). Go clubbing where sweat drips off the ceiling (urgh), but where moloko and Dido and the macaroni are on repeat - cheesy all the way. Then get home, have a fishfinger sandwich and watch davina hosting gods gift...or the word might be on. Then wake up with a hangover on Sat and watch Ant and Dec on sm TV.

Qbish · 05/07/2023 19:37

Oh, there was a bit of internet, but you have to get yourself a dial-up modem 😅

Britain joined the UK in 1973.

I know it was a typo but it made me laugh.

We'd just joined the EU and the world was opening up and felt hopeful. Not sure how we can recreate that other than getting rid of this Tory/ Brexit government.

Assuming you are talking about the UK, we joined the EU in 1973, not the 90s.

Topbird29 · 05/07/2023 19:40

Can't really go that with your kids though, so maybe remove phones and Internet for a bit, wait for a week to watch next programme in a series, but play the cds and dvds..we could do that as still have them, but guess most people stream! Maybe order a dominos (by calling, not on the app).

Nothingbuttheglory · 05/07/2023 19:41

Yeah, institute a rule in your house that only 1 person can use the Internet at a time.

Roselilly36 · 05/07/2023 19:41

1990’s were shit tbh for a young couple like us, at the time, that bought a property and found themselves in serious negative equity within a year. Not an era I would choose to celebrate.

Topbird29 · 05/07/2023 19:42

Maybe get yourself on friends re-united!

Neck a pill and go and dance in a field or warehouse.

Come back to mine for spliffs, tea and dawn chill out sessions.

I'm in!

MidnightMeltdown · 05/07/2023 19:44

Go shopping every Saturday as a 'day out' instead of ordering stuff online

Get yourself a pair of jelly shoes, some Sunny Delight and a wrist full of shag bands

Fantastic music!

Pulp
Suede
Blur
Wonder Stuff
Nirvana
The Pixies
Pearl Jam
Faith No More
L7
Tori Amos

😁

Can we add Soundgarden, Elastica, These Animal Men, Placebo and Offspring to that list 😏

OP, you could try speaking to people normally, without them getting offended by everything you say and accusing you of multiple micro-aggressions.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/07/2023 19:44

Use the landline after 6pm and have someone scowl at you and remind you it's peak time every five minutes.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 05/07/2023 19:46

I went to universally 90’s, don’t think the 90’s were anything particularly amazing!

I met my husband in ‘95 spoke it wasn’t a bad decade but DH was in negative equity for most of the 90’s in a pokey studio flat.

My university pub did pints for £1, that was the best bit!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 05/07/2023 19:52

Great music in the 90s. And I remember reading actual newspapers made of paper.

MidnightMeltdown · 05/07/2023 19:54

Book your book next holiday on teletext instead of using the internet

Emm no, we didn’t join the Eu in the 1990s

sakura06 · 05/07/2023 19:57

The UK joined the EEC in 1973. The EEC was absorbed into the newly formed EU in 1993. Could be where the previous poster is getting confused?

Jelly shoes are back in fashion, I've got 2 pairs :)

Sprogonthetyne · 05/07/2023 19:58

Maybe you could recreate Saturday morning TV, and a 1 hour CBBC after school schedule. Put little toys in the cereal, go on low expectation outings (eg the park on the other side of town), supervise/entertain the DC much less.

EvenmoreDetermined · 05/07/2023 20:02

Have to spend half an hour on Ceefax trying to find out what's on at the cinema and when.

Buying Time Out to find out what was going on in London

Having to go to Blockbusters to hire a video.

Horrible blokey culture (lads mags etc).

Early mobile phones that weighed a ton. Also the cordless landline phones where you had to pull up the aerial and they went flat really quickly.

ZenNudist · 05/07/2023 20:07

This! No one was ever "triggered" or "had to look after their mental health", no one had "lived experience" of for that matter their "truth". A simpler time?

Oh, and girls who like boys who like boys like they're girls who do girls like they're boys and do boys like they're girls... no one was defining anything let alone every last aspect of gender and sexuality.

Fawful · 05/07/2023 20:08

Feel fat for having normal thighs
Get off Mumsnet and go without advice and support and don't have any fun with like-minded people unless they live around you or you have met them in real-life
I would not go back to the 90s, really can't see the attraction (was mid-teens at the start of them).

A not-conservative government.

Amazing sunflower wallpaper

Wallpaper borders around your room. I had a tropical fish design!

!!!

The Conservatives were in power continuously from 1979 to 1997.

Britain joined the UK in 1973.

OK so if you want to be pedantic we'd just signed the Maastricht Treaty which allowed freedom of movement and all the other rights we enjoyed until recently.

Take lots of drugs 😁

Hahaha!! This!

Last summer I met my sister, who was down from London, in a very popular cafe in our city. We used to gather there most weekends with our friends in the 90s and basically chat about the night before - the club we were in, the music, the gossip, how off our heads we'd been etc.

I was late and she was sat waiting next to a table of about ten people in their 20s. She said all they talked about was their jobs, how much they were earning, their promotion potential, how much their new flat cost etc.

So different, but it's not their fault poor things...
