How to live like its the 1990s?

Coffeeandcake12 · 05/07/2023 19:17

Inspired by a thread about how people were happier in the 90s, how can I live more like we did in the 90s?
Obviously no Internet, I already don't use social media apart from mumsnet.
But what made the 90s so good that I could recreate for me and my children a bit more?

Get a landline and start calling people on their landlines.

And dolphins EVERYWHERE

Also some navy blue mugs with golden sun and moon print. You'll know what I mean!!

Awesome thread btw

I've never been a Tory but the Conservatives of then were a different breed to the ones we have today; they had some integrity.

@WomanFromTheNorth Agree that Conservatives of the 90s, not without multiple faults, were still a different breed to today's politicians. Whatever your political leanings, and looking back, John Major had integrity and values and was the last true Statesman for me. His speech after the 1997 election defeat, was gracious and accepting.

(OK, he was having it off with Edwina Currie during his "Family Values" campaign, but no one's perfect 🤣)

Foxy Coxy 😀

Kevinscousin · 05/07/2023 20:29

@WomanFromTheNorth The Tories had integrity then , did they? Yeah they were so principled. Like when Maggie introduced her economic policies that she knew would bring mass unemployment. And when she set the police on miners, that was quality. Loved it when she spent all our money on horrific nuclear weapons as well! Don't forget selling off all the council property !!!

Now as far as the 1990s were concerned,it was generally okay . I was skint and worked for most of it for something like £2.50 a hour , so I had three jobs at one time . Then I had no job at one time as The Tories crashed the economy and couldn't get one. It was good when Labour came in in 1997 and we got the minimum wage though.

It wasn't all Parklife and Sorted for Es and Whizz though. Men were generally sexist b*stards and homophobia and racism was everywhere. I do think men are getting worse though.

I’m in too.

Dancing all night, sweat dripping off the walls, best music ever, such hardcore fun.

I feel a bit sorry for kids today not having this experience 😂

I must have met at least both of you 😂

AlwaysRequiresImprovement · 05/07/2023 20:30

@TeensToday how funny you mention Worcestershire Sauce. I was thinking about it today wondering if I can still buy it. I'm sure I can but I haven't had any since about 2006! 😂

I know the year because I had it loads at university and then stopped for whatever reason

I'm in!

There’ll be lots of blankets, cushions and laughs. I’ll bring out the cozy socks and sweatshirts too.

I think the 90s nostalgia is driven by those of us who hit our teens in it, so remember being a teen, rather than the actual 90s.

The first half of the 90s were utterly shit. But that was because tall, deeply uncool, very unattractive according to pretty much everyone, desperate for a boyfriend and muddling through the horror that was years 7-9 in high school. We also had no money and lived in fear of my dad losing his job.

Second half, 15+, was bloody brilliant. I found my fellow freaks, geeks and grungers and could see uni and escape in the distance.

NannyGythaOgg · 05/07/2023 20:33

Paying 15% interest on a mortgage that I took out at around 7% is my main memory of the 90s.

AlwaysRequiresImprovement · 05/07/2023 20:33

Refuse to get dressed on a Sunday until you've watched Dawson's Creek it was the Hollyoaks Omnibus for me. Which I'm guessing I can still do? 😂

Wear a shell suit and get your hair permed.
Go on holiday and take the biggest suitcase you can find, preferably without wheels. Take half the entire contents of your house including food, a hairdryer and a travel kettle. Book your holiday through a high street travel agent and pay the exact price stated in the brochure. Take photographs on an actual camera and wait until you get home to send them off to be developed. Whilst you are on holiday write postcards to your close family and friends. Wait until you have arrived back home and check if the postcards have arrived. The answer will be no, not for another 2 weeks. Whilst you are on holiday go on the time share talk and keep saying no every time the sales advisors ask if you want to spend 20 times your annual salary buying one weeks ‘holiday’ in the same complex for the exact same week for the rest of your life ( don’t forget the holiday does not include the flights or transfers to the complex, or food).
Buy all your suncream beforehand and take it with you. On the last few days don’t bother with suncream, just use carrot oil to speed up your tan.
On the last day of your holiday, wake up 12 hours before your scheduled flight time, you can then book a time slot to shower in a very cramped and wet bathroom. Pack your case and wait for the bus to pick you up and take you back to the airport. You will be travelling with every other person who has booked through the same tour operator and has a flight within 8 hours of yours. Sit in the airport for approximately 6 hours.
On your return journey buy as much as you can physically carry from the duty free.
Sit on the plane and enjoy the free meal and drinks and free sprays of tester perfumes. Don’t worry about having to pay to sit next to the people you have paid to go on holiday with, that is included in the price.

I feel sorry for kids now too. It's not their fault but the whole mobile phone/ social media thing has made them obsessed with appearances and how they look in the eyes of other people. I saw some videos of a "rave" - it was load of kids with their phones out filming themselves. They can't just absorb the moment any more. Everything is a photo opp. It's so sad. I feel very sorry for our children.

Everyone would lose their phones at a real rave. I used to steal lighters, not intentionally, but I would start off with one and gone home with a handful, even got a lipstick once, it was lighter shaped eh!

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 20:33

@PerspiringElizabeth yes! I forgot about borders round the room!! Ha ha! My house was full of them when I was living at home!

Capitalismwantsyou · 05/07/2023 20:34

Watch Tv together- the same shows!

Play megadrive games all the way to the end without saving

Corporal punishment at schools

Lots of open racism

Calling other kids "gay" but apparently this hasn't changed....

Snugglemonkey · 05/07/2023 20:35

iholdgrudges · 05/07/2023 20:25

Let your kids and their friends ride in the boot of your car and watch paedos pretending to be kids tv presenters, only drink shit coffee and overpluck your eyebrows.

Do not overpluck your eyebrows. Mine never recovered. I just have 2 fine lines.

This is the key! You've cracked it!

I agree. Phones and SM is having a detrimental effect on the yoof.

I’ve said a few times to my partner that in some ways they won’t do all those drugs (not that I did too many, purely recreational) and that’s a good thing but I feel like kids today need the extreme fun and freedom like never before. Teens are meant to be going out, having fun and enjoying life. When else will you get that chance in life?!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 05/07/2023 20:39

I turned 10 in 1993 so at the beginning of the decade it was all about:

  • weekends and school holidays were just endless days of 'playing out' where all the local kids just magically emerged and knew where to find each other without any real planning. We'd scrounge up bits of change and go to the corner shop for 10p ice pops or penny sweets.
  • Saturday afternoon family visits, mum would put on an all afternoon buffet and various family members would pop in for a few hours of chat, tea and buffet food. Sara Lee double chocolate gateaux was always present. Kids would gather and watch Saturday afternoon telly: baywatch, nightrider, Incredible Hulk. Then later on Gladiators, The Generation Game......
  • Sunday afternoon mum would sit with us kids to watch the ITV or BBC drama, 5 Children and IT, Goodnight Mr Tom, The Phoenix and the Carpet.

13 in 1996 by then it was pretty much all about hanging around the Clock Tower in Town, crushing on Take That, deciding what I wanted to carry around in my transparent inflatable handbag (couldn't be embarrassing), boys had 'curtains' haircuts and we thought they were cute.

Daffodilwoman · 05/07/2023 20:41

I almost forgot.
Whilst on holiday go to the tour operator welcome meeting. Drink free sangria and book at least 2 trips through the tour operator. One of these must be a night out and one must be a tour of historical interest.
The night out one must include unlimited free locally produced drinks. The fist couple will taste like paint stripper and you will wonder if you have still have a tongue left after consuming them. By the 4th drink it will start to taste a bit better. By the 6th drink you will be up dancing on the table. After the 8th drink the evening will become a blur.
The price will also include sone inedible food passed off as ‘chicken’.

That's my memory, too.
People in negative equity and losing their homes.
Homelessness grew .

I don't think it just was hitting our teens etc in the 90s, it was a genuinely amazing time to be alive. I was born in 1969, so each of my teenage years were in the 80s, and to start with I was served up the new romantics scene, synth pop (Gary Numan etc). This was followed by mid 80s goth/punk and me fully embracing the alternative scene in London. By 1990 I was 20 and the house, trance, dance scene plus raves and taking Es was the new youth culture. Early 90s I switched to grunge, so Nirvana, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins etc. By 1995, I'm 25 and I'm at Glastonbury with Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Prodigy etc etc playing at probably the best Glasto ever and the height of Brit Pop. 1996, I'm 26, at Oasis at Knebworth, which was "just another weekend".

Im sorry the first half was shit for you, but everything was new and exciting. Todays teenagers have never experienced that freedom and unique ever changing youth culture.
