Prom drama. Wish me luck...

And any tips on how to keep a hormonal and stressed 16yo calm would also be appreciated. We've already had one tantrum when lightening her hair last night after I told her we needed a second round of bleach if she wanted silver-toned hair.

DD fell out with all of her friends a few weeks ago. She's made new friends but unfortunately, she had arranged all of prom with her old friends (limo, hair, makeup, etc) and it was too late to book a new limo and a new MUA so she's stuck with my sister's Range Rover and my MUA abilities.

She's picked a really simple hairstyle and a really elaborate makeup look and will not budge on either. She's had her look planned for over a year. I am a hairdresser who has done a makeup course not an MUA who has done a hair course.

I need encouragement to channel my inner zen so I'm not tempted to "accidentally" stick her in the head with a rat tail comb. Makeup tips are also welcomed. She wants black and silver cat eyes with completely flawless skin and I think is expecting the look to be exactly like the photoshopped Pinterests she has found.

Oh bless her. It's such a big deal for them, it's a shame.

I hope she has a good night in the end. And you stay calm. I'd also be very short tempered in this situation.

Frequency · 05/07/2023 11:50

I'm feeding her before we start. She's always much calmer when she's been fed.

I'm not usually a short-tempered person but I'm stressed too. I want it to be perfect for her and for her to feel great but I am nervous I won't live up to her expectations.

I'm going to try and have a gentle chat about Photoshop's blur tool and colour saturation tools while we eat our breakfast/brunch.

Can you do a couple of trial runs to manage her expectations?

Frequency · 05/07/2023 11:55

It's today.

I wanted to do trial runs but she's been busy with friends all week. I know I can do the look as in the technique. She's tried the look herself a few nights when I've been in bed but has been frustrated because she also cannot get it to look exactly like the Pins.

Prom here too but for my ds so not much going into the preparation. I have to pick him up at 10pm though which seems really early. 11 or 12 would have been better.

Frequency · 05/07/2023 12:04

I hope he has a great time @Aqua82.

Good luck, teens have such high expectations so I can understand why your are nervous.

Just do your best and hope she is so excited that she doesn't critique it too much.

Frequency · 05/07/2023 14:31

We got through step one without a tantrum apart from I allegedly kept "touching her boobs" while I was twisting her (boob length) curls into the curl pins which "weirded" her out.

We also listened to her "supercool and quirky" playlist. I wouldn't have heard of any of the artists because they're all "super random". Bands such as Black Sabbath, Slade, Metallica, Nirvana, and Guns n Roses Grin

I hope you sang along with her playlist really loudly 😄

Feed her some carbs and yourself some gin!

You know who plans/runs/supervises the prom right? I’m sure the kids are a delight but to ask multiple teachers to work a full day, supervise til midnight and then hang around til everyone is picked up is insane.
10pm is beyond reasonable.

We're having a snack break before we do her eyes. She is upstairs eating Pringles. Her sister who wears dark, emo eyeshadow has helped me explain that you cannot have the blackest of black, inky eyeshadow that is softly blurred at the edges unless you have Photoshop. You can have inky black with sharp edges or you can have smoky, dark grey-almost almost black eyeshadow.

She's accepted it now it's come from her sister and has decided on this which I feel a lot more confident about.

My DS's prom was last week. 7.30pm till 10.30pm. Fortunately all he required was a new suit and a haircut, I can't imagine spending hundreds on an event that lasts three hours, though I understand why people do it.

My son refused to.go.to.his prom ,but i.do.think.its much easier being the mother of boys on occasions like the Prom
There is so.much emphasis on girls looking spectacular .

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 05/07/2023 15:23

Touching her boobs eh? I think it’s awful when parents have a child and groom them for 16 years to finally molest them on prom night 😂

And all while listening to bands you’ve never heard of.

Whatever next?

DD fell out with their long-term mates just before GCSE but actually wasn't the one at fault. Typical story, boys got involved, DD is a lesbian, divide and conquer from one boy who thought (wrongly) that DD fancied her former best friend. All going to different college so although shitty now won't really matter too much come September.

However, DD is not a dress/make up/limo person. They are a Victorian/steampunk goth currently.

I'm trying to convince them to let me do their hair and make up but I keep getting comments about "subscribing to the patriarchy and societies view of what a woman should look like for aesthetic reasons when we have a brain, mother".

They've not gotten over me asking them to wear a bridesmaid dress at my wedding two years ago which they wore for 25 minutes.

They are wearing a 70s two tone flared suit, with an 80s highneck Victorian style blouse they found on Vinted, and Doc Martens.

They were offered a ride on a friend's Harley motorbike but said that was too "show off" so we are driving. They've already said of the music is chavvy they're coming home to listen to "decent music".

Honestly. Teens. I'd have been chuffed if my mum wanted to treat me to a nice dress and hair do.

Frequency · 05/07/2023 17:11

She's upstairs getting her dress on and is happy Grin

There was a moment and a few tears when we were in the middle of the eyes. I don't think she could envision the end result but once we started on the base and cleaned up the fallout from the dark shadows she was happy. She made a few adjustments before we added powder and setting spray and it's not exactly like the pic because I couldn't find out fine silver glitter so she has metallic silver instead of glitter but she is satisfied with it.

I'm mentally and physically exhausted. I'm opening the gin once she leaves.

Well done! I hope you don’t have to drive to collect her. I had to stay sober until 11pm last week when I collected mine.

Vitaminbees · 05/07/2023 17:23

Hooray! I can sense your relief from here!
