Dear major UK supermarket ...

What would you like to say to the chief exec of the supermarkets you use? I'll start ...

If you are going to sell spinach in plastic bags, please at least direct that they are stored in the refrigerated section rather than on the general unrefrigerated vegetable shelves along with the potatoes and onions etc.

Thank you Sainsburys.

Please don't have your staff bugger off leaving their carts in front of the items I want to buy and equally don't have them stand right beside me and ignore me struggling to get to items I want bc of their carts and huff and puff when I ask if they can move it so I can get something they're blocking

Why can't we take baskets to the car? Just tag them

I'm very suspicious of the supermarkets where you don't even scan and they have your card details and do it all by camera- it doesn't feel right. Stop it

Imagine if we could take baskets to the car and they're tagged.... The alarms would be going off all the time at the doors.

Icequeen01 · 05/07/2023 07:16

Please can you put a holder for the smart shop scanner on your disabled scooters. I take my elderly DM shopping with me each week and we both like to use the scanners to save time. As she doesn't have anywhere to put the scanner (she can't reach it if it's in the basket on the front) she has to keep putting it in and out of her handbag each time which is a right pain!

coronafiona · 05/07/2023 07:17

Please note that families can have 5 people in them and therefore multiples of two or four are not convenient. And please go back to the prices of 3 years ago it is scary how much shopping costs now.

coronafiona · 05/07/2023 07:19

I think they will try and get everyone online and will have personalised pricing. So those that can afford it- whether they feel they can or not- will pay more.

tacomaco · 05/07/2023 07:28

Dear Tesco

Why have you stopped selling a box of a dozen eggs. Why can I only get boxes of 6?

Where have the 6l bottles of milk gone. I now have to buy more in smaller bottles. More plastic.

Dear Sainsbury’s top up shop

Please stop rearranging the layout of the store twice a year. It doesn’t my head in when I can’t find what I need.

The inflation on your chocolate crepes is horrendous. £1.90 for a pack of 6. A year ago they were £1.20. It’s crepes and a chocolate spread for god sake, not caviar.

Golden Delicious can be truly golden and delicious, rather than green and bitter? 😮

I didn't know that!

Yes, they are actually a golden yellow when they are ripe and years ago that's how they were sold, but supermarkets started selling them underripe and green - probably because once they have gone golden they don't keep very long.

justanothermummma · 05/07/2023 07:54

Please remove your overpriced kids magazines from right at the entrance (Co-Op). Therefore I don't have to battle with my daughter the whole time I'm in there because she can't stop thinking about the ££ Frozen magazine she saw on the way in, that she would have never mentioned otherwise.

A lot of people on here could solve their issues by using their local butcher, fishmonger or greengrocer.

My small local town has all 3 of these and I can choose how many of everything I want. I appreciate that's not the case for everyone but if you are choosing the convenience of getting everything from one place then you lose the freedom to buy a single chicken breast etc.

SoSad16 · 05/07/2023 08:03

I found this out for you from a Fruit Buyer in a supermarket - it will likely apply to all the supermarkets

‘We havent sold it for 4 years - the main reason is the biggest production area is the USA who wax the apple - we moved away from having wax on our apples as a policy and asking the the USA to produce these small volumes of unwaxed apples for us is not cost effective or appealing for them (we only sold small volumes)

France produce a few which dont eat as well but aren't waxed so we could take a look at theses again when the new harvest comes into play’

Needmorelego · 05/07/2023 08:08

@Meeting I was kinda thinking that. Everyone on this thread seems to hate supermarkets and the way they do things - well shop somewhere else then. But no….they want the convenience.

I'd like to request smaller packs of pate. It goes off before we can eat it.

Eat what you want then freeze the rest.

A lot of those places are more expensive and don't open the long hours that supermarkets do, which can cause difficulties for people on a budget or with time restrictions.

Please stop treating your customers as presumed criminals. The giant flashing CCTV cameras as you walk in, magnetic trolley locks and scanning your receipt to leave make it feel like sole kind of dystopian detention centre, as opposed to a pleasant place to shop.

Loca garden centre has a notice saying that they use facial recognition at the door. Nope. Not spending money where it's assumed from the off that I'm a criminal.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 08:12

I agree with @Meeting . We have greengrocers bakers and a fishmonger.
Many people want to buy their food in packaging and conveniently though, and would prefer to buy too much.

you mean the local butcher, fishmonger or greengrocer which are open from 10-12 and 14-17 thus not available to many people working full time?

Most people are complaining about having to buy more than they need, so they would be saving money buy not buying as many of an item. You are also getting better quality and in my opinion they're not very much more expensive at all.
I agree with opening times but mine are all open 6 days a week.

My butcher opens at 7am daily and is open on Saturday morning.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 08:16

My local ones are open late in the evenings and 7 days a week.
The produce is often cheaper because you only buy what you need.

I assume this is an apple variety - which one? Empire apples have been mentioned, so have Golden Delicious.

I shop mostly from Ocado, and really only have one gripe - Dear Ocado, Please could you have a word with the robot who sometimes plonks tins into the bag that already has bananas in it. Thank you.

I LOVE the increase in more diverse food choices particularly where you see the options reflecting the local cultural demographic (I’m in London and every tesco and Sainsbury’s has a different mix) . But please mix it in to the standard categories rather than having a Polish aisle, Asian aisle, Caribbean aisle etc to make it easier to integrate in to weekly shop.

If I’m buying rice, I want to go to the rice section and have all options there. But instead you have to go to the Indian section to get the really good rice.

I want to buy chickpeas in the tinned veg aisle. Not to have to check there and the Caribbean aisle for the best option.

Same with the good instant noodles. They’re not in the noodles section, but in the Asian section.

Makes shopping complicated and you need to get to know what’s in those specific aisles.

Interested to see if anyone disagrees and why

👏 👏 👏

Yes, I dont want to have to check 3 different aisles for tinned tomatoes or black pepper.

Right how much here and how many grams, then here, then here

Twattle · 05/07/2023 08:18

Also, Asda used to sell this black pepper and salt bloomer loaf. I could smell it as I approached the bread aisle.

It wouldn't make it to the car in one piece then I would go home and eat most of it.

Why did you take it away?

WhatADrabCarpet · 05/07/2023 08:21

I wish I lived somewhere that HAD a fishmonger, butcher and greengrocer.

Our nearest butcher closed down , there's an Asian supermarket in town but bus fare/parking would negate the cost of going there and I haven't seen a fishmonger since Macfisherie's closed decades ago.

Ihopeyoudance · 05/07/2023 08:22

Why do you always put the gluten free products next to the bloody bakery?!! Have you not heard of cross contamination ?

Quisquam · 05/07/2023 08:24

Dear Asda - please go back to putting use by dates on fruit and veg! I don’t want raspberries delivered on a Monday afternoon, that are a liquid mush on Tuesday morning!

I am sure this no dates on fruit and veg are nothing to do with saving food waste, but rather a way for supermarkets to sell goods past their best, without pickets noticing.

SoSad16 · 05/07/2023 08:26

Hi. It was in answer to the query on why it’s hard to find a Red Delicious. Apparently US has started producing a ‘safe waxes’ variety which is sometimes available
