I admired a friend's nails today

Gel on her own nails, pretty design. She told me they'd cost £78 in a place in Bond Street!

Cue a general discussion around nails and what they cost. The consensus seemed to be around £30/£35 and most of the people I was with "always" have done nails.

I feel extravagant when I pay £40 for a haircut. I'm not sure what the point of this is, but I had no idea people were routinely spending such sums on their nails.

I started having my nails done and it ended up being too pricey. £30 every 3 weeks isn't sustainable for me

Whattodo121 · 02/07/2023 19:17

Mine cost £32 a go, and they last about 3-4 weeks if I have them cut short and a neutral colour. I don’t get them done all the time though as I don’t have time or the money! I do prefer them when they’re all shiny though!

FAFO · 02/07/2023 19:17

I’ve never understood getting your nails done. I can paint them myself, job done.

I’m always surprised at how much people spend on their nails.
As long as they don’t complain about the col they can spend it on whatever they want! Couldn’t listen to someone complaining about the cost of food etc while spending at least £100 a month on unnecessary beauty treatments.

penguinsss · 02/07/2023 19:18

Bloody hell, I just got gel on my nails this weekend and it was £20. They last me a month though. No way would I be paying £78 😮

I don’t mind £20 a month, having my nails done makes me feel more put together

Missingmyusername · 02/07/2023 19:20

I’ve had mine done regularly, ruined my nails. I do them myself now with an LED lamp.
I hate sitting in salons, most people find it relaxing but I can’t stand it.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/07/2023 19:20

Each to their own.

Some people smoke, other people love takeaways, some spend money on shoes. I spend money on my dogs.

As long as she can afford it, then fair game to her.

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 02/07/2023 19:21

Mine are £26/£30 with builder gel, the salon is always full

Stickybackplasticbear · 02/07/2023 19:21

Cool you learned something then! 👍

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/07/2023 19:22

Oh, I do my nail’s myself.

Don’t have the time to waste in a salon.

TheWalrusdidbeseech · 02/07/2023 19:23

I can't be bothered, but so many of my friends do have beautiful name and subtle designs they could never manage on their own, or so many different colours they would waste a fortune on polish to use them once.

I spend a fortune on my hair, because it's worth it, and anything cheaper has proven to be a false economy and give unpleasant results.

If it makes people happy, good for them.

What does make me laugh is people complaining they are broke, but who spend a fortune on nails, eyebrows, hair and everything else. If you can afford luxury treatments you could manage at home, you are not broke 😂

allmyliesaretrue · 02/07/2023 19:23

My hands aren't steady enough to do my own.

I have Biab and it's £22.50. I most certainly would not pay £78!!

My daughter’s last couple of hair cuts cost me £130 a time, I wish hers were 40 😁. It is a cut and foils etc, usually takes about 3 hours. I have to be firm and say she can only have it every few months. Daddies little girls eh…….

littleripper · 02/07/2023 19:25

The rents on Bond Street will be insane - that seems fair enough to me compared to £35 anywhere round here!

bibbityboppityboo · 02/07/2023 19:25

I pay £30-40 normally, more if I get nail art or gems or something wild! That's at a local northern salon. I've had them done in london for a similar price to your friend, it's probably comparable if you include the location.

I love it, can't go without it now - it makes me feel out together when I'm not!

How old is she?

Doggymummar · 02/07/2023 19:27

I pay £35 for hands and £50 for feet. Hands are every three weeks and feet Summer only every six weeks

Bearpawk · 02/07/2023 19:27

People do forget about the melanoma risk from regular uv lamp exposure too. Melanoma in nails is fairly common.
£70 a month to massively increase your cancer risk.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/07/2023 19:28

I pay £18.50 for my nails to be done every fortnight. It’s my little treat to myself.

Tulipblank · 02/07/2023 19:30

I pay £25/30 every 3/4 weeks for my nails. Definitely worth it for nice hands. (I also have my eyelashes done every 2 weeks and hair every 6 weeks which I also really value)

Overthebow · 02/07/2023 19:30

It’s expensive but as long as people can afford it then fine. It’s when people get nails and hair done at salons regularly then complain about having no money and not being able to buy a house that annoys me.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/07/2023 19:26

How old is she?

15, 16 this month

putthatdownsteve · 02/07/2023 19:36

It’s never appealed to me. I am a lifelong nail biter though!

I spend £6 a month getting my eyebrows waxed and that feels extravagant 🤣

Spudlet · 02/07/2023 19:40

Once a week I leave my home treatment room and venture into town and work from a room in a place that does nails and various other beauty and wellness-y treatments. It’s generally busy there, lots of ladies with beautiful nails! I always feel very rustic in there 😳😂

usedtobeasizeten · 02/07/2023 19:44

Has anyone had plexigel nails? I’d like to try but I have weak nails and I don’t want them damaged further.
