I admired a friend's nails today

Gel on her own nails, pretty design. She told me they'd cost £78 in a place in Bond Street!

Cue a general discussion around nails and what they cost. The consensus seemed to be around £30/£35 and most of the people I was with "always" have done nails.

I feel extravagant when I pay £40 for a haircut. I'm not sure what the point of this is, but I had no idea people were routinely spending such sums on their nails.

Incorrect. I had CND shellac (a brand name) for four years solid. Nails file

Your statement is pretty black and white. Glad it was fine for you, for many people it is not.

I personally dislike them and wouldn't give a fiver
Always think they make people look a bit lower class*

Lower class, lower than what?

I don't think you can accuse the Princess of Wales to have "scabby nails", but it's not news that the royals and most upper class or business women have very understated manicure while the TOWIE and Kardashian not so much.

If you like your nails, why do yo care if it doesn't make you posh? Who is even trying to look posh these days?

The Princess of Wales and the upper class aren't necessarily better people than those on TOWIE though.

better or worst, that's a very personal opinion, I am sure the TOWIE lot love their nails,

but understated manicure is not "scabby".

I pay £35 for hands and £50 for feet. Hands are every three weeks and feet Summer only every six weeks

How come feet are £50 compared to £35 for fingers?

Oh, I do my nail’s myself.

Don’t have the time to waste in a salon.

But you have time to waste doing your own nails? This doesn't make sense. They do a better job faster than you can do surely

I don’t know the actual reason but if I was a nail tech, I’d charge more for toes because a lot of people have gross feet!

Ripleysgameface · 03/07/2023 23:04

I do my own gel nails every couple of weeks.
I bought a mylee kit in the January sale and with a bit of practice they now look just as good as the salon nails.
I always get compliments on them.

FloofCloud · 03/07/2023 23:09

You're paying for the overheads in Bond Street! I knew a girl who was a hairdresser for a teallt well known salon /hairdresser in central London, she was just an evoloyee (not renting a chair) and charged clients at least 3x what you'd pay in Greater London ... plus she couldn't cut (or anything else!) for shit ... but a lovely personality! ...it's all tied into rent, rates etc being huge ... do it more locally!

Bearpawk · 03/07/2023 23:56

@Stickybackplasticbear it's not misinformation, I'm pretty well versed in skin cancer, being stage 3 myself. But sure if you had a 'quick google'...
Melanoma in nails is common enough already even before gel uv exposure.
My oncologist says they're now starting to see cases in nail beds from gel users starting to come through, as regular gel Manis are a pretty new phenomenon, in the grand scheme of things it will take a while before awareness raises. There's always of course a lag with the first cases then investigations/ studies etc. (I mean they still haven't banned sunbeds have they)
I have 3 monthly derm checks and they always remind me not to have gels too.

No judgement on anyone who has them, I've had them myself in the past. Wouldn't risk it now though.

Schlomp · 04/07/2023 00:05

My oncologist says the same

LordSalem · 04/07/2023 00:52

When I was able to afford it I got acrylics every month for £25. Had to stop just before covid hit because I couldn’t afford it any more. I've become quite accomplished at doing my own at a fraction of the price. Nail powders, foils, decals, glow in the dark, quick dry top coats for everyday, a little uv light and gels for special occasions. I miss my razor sharp long claws but I get by very well. Shein and Google helped!

I stopped having gel nails done as it's expensive - £35 in my local salon including removal.

Surely gel nails should be getting cheaper by now. Salons/nail places must be making a huge mark up.

Especially considering so many of them use trafficked women as nail technicians.

BMrs · 06/07/2023 18:27

Wow! I do my own gel nails at home. It's really easy and you can buy everything to do them easily.
