DS doesn't want me to say our 'good night' things anymore

Toffeesgirl · 30/06/2023 19:46

I've said a special way of saying goodnight to him since, well forever, and now he's 15 and very nicely said he doesn't want me to say it anymore as he's not a child!!

I, obviously, didn't let him know I was heartbroken (lighthearted) and said Ok but omg, he's growing up and I'm not ready.

I know it's perfectly healthy and he is growing up and blah, blah, blah but he's my baby boy.

Please tell me I'm not the only one

What a sweet thread with lucky mummies and lovely ways to say your good nights! Currently in bed with my 7 month old hoping he’ll want my good nights until 15!!

sorry can’t remember names but I sing the Barney song to mine too and to another poster mine always giggles with ten little fingers. I just love the way he turns his head and smiles when I quote the book. I hope he remembers it when he’s older too.

@DollyTheFluffyOne awwwww 😭😭

inloveandmarried · 30/06/2023 22:35

It will come back once he's over himself! At about 21

I remember when I said to my son once "where has my little boy gone?" and he said "he's inside the big boy" . I still cry with that now and he's in his 30s.

😢

Pebblesontheside · 30/06/2023 22:41

Just wait til he’s asleep! I go in and murmur ‘goodnight mr sausage head, mummy loves’ or some such nonsense to my ds on my way to bed, and will continue to do so until his bedtime is later than mine! 😆

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 30/06/2023 22:45

@ThatsRoughBuddy

Me: See you later Freddiegator.
Him: In a while Mummydile.

😆 That's so cute.

CallieQ · 30/06/2023 22:47

At 15?! I don't think mine said goodnight at all at that age!

ElizabethVonArnim · 30/06/2023 22:47

Is it 'night night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite?'
My dad still says that to me and I'm 47.

bakewellbride · 30/06/2023 22:53

My son knocked that on the head when he was 3, I can't believe u made it to 15!

MollysBrolly · 30/06/2023 23:03

My now teen DD loves a lullaby until she got her own room aged 10 and that was the end of it!

my DS used to have the same story every night and then listen to Percy the park keeper tape - turned 8 and no more

kids can be so cruel

GreyCarpet · 30/06/2023 23:09

Ah this has just reminded me of our "All aboard the Going to Bed train. First stop - toilet town!"

My son is 24 now. I'll have to remind him of it tomorrow.

Such lovely memories 💖

maimeo · 30/06/2023 23:11

Never mind kids or grandkids - my DH and I look at the clock at 12pm and one or both of us will say "Time for bed, said Zebedee". 😂

GreyCarpet · 30/06/2023 23:12

My daughter was prem and 3lb 7oz. For ages she could only sleep lying on top of me. Sometimes of im lying on the sofa she's asks for a cuddle, like when she was a baby. She means me lying on my back while she lies outstretched on her front on top of me.

She's 17!

GreyCarpet · 30/06/2023 23:12

Her weight was relevant because she was like a kitten. She's not like a kitten anymore! 🤣

theDudesmummy · 30/06/2023 23:13

My DS is 14 and has special needs. We have recently started a new bedtime thing, for a rather odd reason. He had dead straight hair until a few months ago. With puberty his hair has suddenly gone super curly (his dad's did the same at the same age). So I have started calling him my sheep, because he looks like a cute wooly sheep (we also live in a sheep farming area so there are loads of sheep about).

The used to be a poster on MN whose name was "sheepgomeep" which stuck in my mind for some reason. So in the evening now at bedtime I sing him a song which goes "Meep Meep here comes the sheep". He absolutely loves it! So if Sheepgomeep is still around, thanks for that!

I hope we can keep this up for a while at least. He is just about to become taller than me, and I miss my little boy even though I am very proud of the big boy.

WishIWasACavewoman · 30/06/2023 23:15

@GreyCarpet I love that! Gives me hope that DS will still sprawl on me when he's 17!

Why would you think I am being sarcy @Toffeesgirl ?! There's a reason why your son doesn't want this 'special goodnight' anymore. Why are you being so snippy?

Oh come on! The Confused face after the question? Had you left that off, no-one would’ve thought for a second you were being sarcy.

WetBandits · 30/06/2023 23:17

I’m a bit tipsy and these have made me cry! ❤️

I'm in my 50's and can still remember the look on my fathers face when I stopped our goodnight routine, I was a real Daddy's girl so it hurt him and I noticed despite him trying to hide it. Now he's almost 80 and we text each other to say goodnight, love you every single night and it means the world to me.

❤️

Awwwwwwwwwwwww. Grin

EarringsandLipstick · 30/06/2023 23:36

@GreyCarpet @theDudesmummy

Your stories are gorgeous too!

God I'm feeling in need of some bedtime routines instead of bawling at mine to 'get to BED. School tomorrow!' or variations of such.

Piscesmumma1978 · 30/06/2023 23:49

Aw, op that's sad 🥺

I have a 15yo, she doesn't even say goodnight anymore. I also have a one year old. I am clinging onto everything with her. It's sad how fast it goes xx

Shodan · 30/06/2023 23:57

DS2 is 15 and I still go up to say goodnight when he goes to bed- although at the moment it's because he has to wear foot brace/splint things and cba to do them himself 😂

But the popping up to say goodnight is always the time when, if something is on his mind, he'll tell me. There are some nights when we'll be talking for quite a while, so that he can go to sleep with an easier mind. He can tell me when he wants me to stop.

I don't have kids but am a bit tipsy and they've made me tear up! Blush

Night night sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite x

Spudlover · 01/07/2023 00:14

I always say to my nearly 17 year old “Night night Teddy Bear”

So far, he thinks it’s completely normal and always answers me. Luckily, most sleepovers are at friends houses or it might be different!
