Would you send dc into school in these until end of term?

I thought these would be OK until summer until the plastic went to. Ds is 11. Don't really want to buy new shoes if I can avoid it just for a few more weeks

If funds were tight, I'd put them in plimsolls for the last couple of weeks and send a note abhoring the waste of a new pair.

captncrunch · 30/06/2023 18:24

If they're comfortable for him I wouldn't worry about it for a couple of weeks.

captncrunch · 30/06/2023 18:25

But yes as pp said, our school would be fine with trainers for a couple of weeks. Others might be more strict

Still comfy. He wants to keep them so he isn't embarrassed either.

Nothing that a liberal application of black show polish couldn’t make a difference to.

captncrunch · 30/06/2023 18:26

In that case I honestly wouldn't worry about it! I work in a school and wouldn't bat an eye. We're all too knackered to care at this point 😂

FadedRed · 30/06/2023 18:26

SHOE polish ffs!

pastaandpesto · 30/06/2023 18:26

Do they still fit him comfortably and is the grip on the soles still adequate? If so then yes I would absolutely make them last to the end of term, but I am a slattern about this kind of stuff.

Unfortunately the leather has completely worn away so the white bit is plastic, that then also split. A sharpie might work

I'd just colour in the pale bits - shoe polish or black Sharpie!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/06/2023 18:27

Yeah, I would.

Pass it off as grunge revival.

DS always had holes in the knees of his trousers. No idea what he used to do to them. I was poor. We made do.

latenightprep · 30/06/2023 18:27

I'd put him in anything else I had that fit him. I don't think they can enforce uniform at primary school, ours are fairly relaxed on shoes. I agree not buying a new pair this close till end of term.

Finchgold · 30/06/2023 18:28

My kid does this to all shoes within 4-6 weeks so he regularly kicks about in shoes like that!

Chickydoo · 30/06/2023 18:29

Hell yes!
Then do a ceremonial dump into recycling when he's done.
He'll cope

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 18:29

Annoyingly perfect on the soul. No wear at all.

It rains a lot where I live and there is a hole in the toe so I wouldn't. Your son may not mind but other children can be cruel, and if he is 11 he is presumably going to secondary in September- I wouldn't want my y6 daughters photos and leavers assemblies etc to have broken shoes in them. I don't buy new shoes at the start of the autumn term though, I buy them whenever they are needed (through growth or wearing out) so would buy now with a view of them being used in September as well as throughout the summer holidays when needed.

Moveoverdarlin · 30/06/2023 18:31

Colour the exposed bits in with marker pen / Black nail varnish. That’ll make them look a hundred times better.

lucysmam · 30/06/2023 18:33

Yep - my dd's handbag she uses has left black marks on white school shirt sleeves where it's presumably transferred a bit of the dye used on it with the heat - they're fine for the 3 or so weeks that are left.

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 18:34

I'm worried he will grow over the summer. I don't normally buy cheap ones but maybe a size up from M&S would be a safer bet.

He ripped a pair before. My mind boggles! He goes to a SEN school so bullying isn't too much of a issue compared to a mainstream year 6. Gah! 3 weeks to go! 😨

My DD did that to the toe caps of a brand new pair when she was 7. In just three hours on her bike. I could have cried. M&S too.

FlounderingFruitcake · 30/06/2023 18:39

I’d send him in trainers. Nothing against a sharpie job but they’re unfortunately past that and he’ll get wet feet if it rains. My DD is at a private school so usually v strict on uniform and her all white sports trainers got a hole in the toe so I told them I wasn’t buying new ones for 2 weeks so she was wearing her pink home ones. It’s not the money but if she grows over the summer it’d be so wasteful. They were fine with it.

nopainnogain1 · 30/06/2023 18:41

I've bought my 12 year old daughter airforce 1s in all black for school. They've lasted her 6 weeks at best before she's wrecked them. I'm absolutely sending her to school in her destroyed shoes. Looks after your shit! Honestly....no idea about money and the cost of items like trainers. Confused
I'll buy her brand spanking new shoes for September but ffs. I just got her new saltwater summer sandals which she refuses to wear, haviannas, and kicker sliders.
Kids are twats, that's my take away.

DS did the same with a pair of M&S trainers at 5 in a day at holiday club. I did manage to get a refund arguing that shoes should be able to survive more than one day doing normal age-appropriate activities and pointing out that the rest of the shoe was still gleaming and immaculately new.

With school shoes, DS1 tends to need them summer term to summer term and grows out before the end of term. He doesn't tend to grow rapidly, but there is a back up option of passing on to DS2 who tends to be one size smaller which eases the gamble.

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 18:44

Hmm... going in with his trainers might be a option. They aren't plain black but it's worth a try.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 30/06/2023 18:44

If he's happy in them yes. I'd try a sharpie on the toes.
