I thought these would be OK until summer until the plastic went to. Ds is 11. Don't really want to buy new shoes if I can avoid it just for a few more weeks

I wouldn't, no. I would have replaced them before they got so bad though.

Lindy2 · 30/06/2023 18:49

Slap a load of shoe polish on them. That should blend in the worn out bit and improve the look of them.

heartofglass23 · 30/06/2023 18:53

Buy new ones now.

I don't understand this new obsession with new things for September. I've always just bought as and when required.

My dd's shoes are too small and I'm wondering at what point it might be acceptable to just send her in trainers. Not buying new till September because her width fitting is always changing too.

MaryJean87 · 30/06/2023 18:58

No I wouldn't send them in in those. I'd just get a cheap pair from somewhere or if you can't afford that, let them wear trainers and tell school there's a holes in the shoes and they can't wear them. My kids shoes were wrecked, I got them a pair for £8 each in Primark to wear till the end of term.

Because if you buy new ones now their feet may grow again over the holidays and you'll have to buy another pair.

I'd get them now for my children but they both don't seem to grow quickly but some other friends are going through sizes like anything.

Still comfy. He wants to keep them so he isn't embarrassed either.

Put some black polish on them, as he's comfortable they'll be fine until the end of term

timberho · 30/06/2023 19:08

Trainers - school will be unlikely to challenge it so close to end of term.

FLOWER1982 · 30/06/2023 19:10

They’re absolutely fine. Does it really matter if he’s not looking perfect. No one cares.

CoffeeWithCheese · 30/06/2023 19:12

For primary I definitely would just send in in trainers or whatever fits and is comfy for the last few weeks (combination of speed of growth at that age and secondaries more likely to be knobs about uniform).

As for leavers photos and stuff, ours were taken a few weeks ago now, and about 90% of year 6 are now in some form of “compromise” uniform (trainers, non uniform trousers or whatever). Our Head is very pragmatic about it though and knows money is tight for lots of our families.

WinniFinniHadog · 30/06/2023 19:12

Do you have a hot glue gun?!

If so, fill in the holes with glue, sand it back smooth, and then use black permanent marker with shoe polish on top to blend it all in.

You could take them to a cobbler and see if they could do a quick repair.

You could send him in, in trainers for the last couple of weeks.

Cotswoldmama · 30/06/2023 19:15

I am! My 10 year olds school boots are now superglued together! They're not even that old, so I'm not buying new ones until the end of August as he won't be wearing them during the hols anyway. There's only 3 weeks left of school and his feet grow quickly.

@heartofglass23

have you ever met an actual child?

most of them grow like weeds over the summer. It's better to get them fitted for the new year, than guess months earlier.

TwoPointFourCatsAndDogs · 30/06/2023 19:16

Sharpie and shoe polish will make them look better.

mogtheexcellent · 30/06/2023 19:18

Black duck tape is your friend here. I often use it for the last few weeks. Dd is a menace for dragging shoes on concrete.

Also works on wellies.

I'd say the same. I couldn't send a child to school with holes in their shoes if I could afford a new pair.

Zarataralara · 30/06/2023 19:22

Just colour them over with a black marker or wear any alternatives he already has. Buying school shoes in July is madness, they’ll only get 2-3 weeks wear.

HamstersAreMyLife · 30/06/2023 19:24

My kids shoes look line this after 3 weeks. I think they're fine! Honestly I'm certain they must crawl around to do the damage they do so quickly!

Goldbar · 30/06/2023 19:31

Put a sticker/some tape on the plastic bit and shoe polish on top.

You could also try a leather repair patch.

I wouldn't buy poor quality shoes for the sake of a few weeks.

Goldbar · 30/06/2023 19:32

Masking tape would be a good base for polish.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 30/06/2023 19:33

They look no different to most of the kids at my Dcs schools - and that's across 3 schools - primary, secondary, and special.
Dc3 is in trainers.
Dc1 and Dc2 are wearing tatty shoes. They are high school so I asked if they wanted new ones or to wear trainers - they remain in their tatty shoes as they said most their mates are looking the same and thought I was weird for being bothered Grin
Dc4 is currently my favourite child as her shoes are still lovely Wink

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 19:38

It's not about getting all new for September, it's the unknown holiday growth. I don't want to buy a pair that will only be worn for three weeks.

I'd normally just buy a new pair. He is the first child out of 4 kids the shred his shoes. His brother had a new pair two weeks ago but he said they was painfully tight and he is in year 10. But these still fit well.

I'm going to try a fabric plaster and polish.

Yeah they're fine or Clarks Hopper Runs are only £10 at the mo

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 19:42

Oh for the love of God! What has he done to them? The back of both the soles are coming off too. I might just polish his feet black

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 20:00

Fabric plaster, polish and superglue. I will put more glue on when the polish is dry. Pray it doesn't rain now
