Would you send dc into school in these until end of term?

I thought these would be OK until summer until the plastic went to. Ds is 11. Don't really want to buy new shoes if I can avoid it just for a few more weeks

Buy some cheap supermarket black shoes or trainers that can be used at home/for playing too then buy proper school shoes in a few weeks.

I wouldn't be buying school shoes at this point in the year when they could jump up a shoe size by September. I will buy new ones if there are months left of the school year but not a couple of weeks.

Oh for the love of God! What has he done to them? The back of both the soles are coming off too. I might just polish his feet black

I wouldn't send him to school in shoes that bad.

I think you've done a good job there!

If you have a school group WhatsApp you could ask if anyone has a grown out pair the same size?

Gelatelli · 30/06/2023 20:09

They're fine. My DC's arsey teacher wanted a written letter when we replaced school shoes with black trainers with a couple of weeks of the school year left. Hmm Their feet always grow so much in the summer, no point in a new pair at this juncture.

honeynutcornfllakes · 30/06/2023 20:14

Something like this is cheap and cheerful and suitable for weekend use aswell

So do I. I wouldn't have thought that was possible.

Nothing that a liberal application of black show polish couldn’t make a difference to.

This

Buy new ones now.

I don't understand this new obsession with new things for September. I've always just bought as and when required.

I just bought two sizes up in clothes when they were getting a bit small then switched when the bigger size was the better fit. Shoes you want the most growing room though, they can randomly go up a size in a couple of months and seem to grow more over summer.

Fabric plaster, polish and superglue. I will put more glue on when the polish is dry. Pray it doesn't rain now

They look fine now, don't worry about it

Me too normally but I have dropped the ball on these. I should have replaced them as soon as there was a tiny hole after half term, but I was hoping they would last out.

Now end of year slump has set in and I'm ready to give up. Dd has broken her arm, mums just died. Part of me doesn't care if I'm honest.

You have done a great job . I have sent a fair few letters to primary with shoes suddenly broken - not fitting waiting till weekend or end of summer.

see how they go

Bikingwithbabies · 30/06/2023 20:48

captncrunch · 30/06/2023 18:26

In that case I honestly wouldn't worry about it! I work in a school and wouldn't bat an eye. We're all too knackered to care at this point 😂

This!

ThePoshUns · 30/06/2023 20:51

In fairness you've done a good job there and the further details you've given about your current life then just go with it . Best wishes to you

Archeron · 30/06/2023 20:52

Black polish. There’s literally three weeks left!

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 21:02

Let's see if it lasts! Thanks for the ideas, I wouldn't have thought of this without the duct tape idea.

The idea about the next size up ready to go is also a good idea. I'm going to beg on the class WhatsApp group too. Ideally I avoid clarks until late August when all the sizes have sold out 😄 I might try Vinted too

They look fine! If they fit him I would send him in them. If they are not waterproof, trainers on wet days. If you have plimsolls, keep them in his bag as a back up.

saying someone who had to buy new shoes with 7 weeks of year left as child grew a size! Had no choice. But worn out shoes, I would not bother with 3 weeks to go. And school closures for strike days!

SausageinaBun · 30/06/2023 21:12

They look fine now - really amazing repair job.

I also don't really understand the thing about children growing in the 6 week long holidays. Mine take at least 9 months to change shoe size. Maybe I just have children with really steady growth.

MargaretThursday · 30/06/2023 21:49

Ds had some like that one year, but the soles were flapping too.
We mended them with duct tape and kept on till the end of term.

Ds hates with huge hatred buying new shoes (last year he suggested I went to the shop and bought one pair of each time in every size that might fit, he could try them on and then I'd take back the others. I refused) so he was delighted with that solution. In fact I had huge difficulty persuading him that he couldn't continue like that in September.

He's actually ended up wearing (black) trainers all year, because the ones we got at the start of the year were faulty, and they had none in his size when we went back. So I sent him in with trainers, and wrote a note in case he was asked by a teacher. No teacher asked in the next fortnight so he said he'd continue wearing them until someone complained-and no teacher did.
He was a happy bunny and it saved me a few pounds too!

Choccyoclocky · 30/06/2023 22:00

I would put him in trainers.

DS5 has been wearing Spiderman trainers for a couple of months now and they haven't said anything.

DS11 has worn white trainers before when his shoes have broken. He trashes his shoes from football!

Beamur · 30/06/2023 22:09

Cracking patch up job OP 👍👍

Ds was steady with clothes/height until 14, but could stay the same size in shoes for ages before growing. So I'd buy with the most room I could but after two months he could have then jumped half a size. So they still fit but if I'd waited I could have bought half a size bigger and has them last longer.
