trigger warning

just saw this news about how a woman’s leg was caught in a travelator in Bangkok airport and had to be amputated. But… how? How can this happen - surely there needs to be some sort of gap for it to be pulled in. Very weird story

Son shares horror of seeing mother's amputated limb

WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT: The 57-year-old mother was at Don Mueang Airport when she tripped over a suitcase and got stuck on a travelator, which ripped through her limb.

Mmm I saw this yesterday and it doesn't quite make sense does it.

Hugasauras · 30/06/2023 15:46

It says the force of the fall forced her leg through so I think it the end got pushed down, her leg went in it and it sprung back and trapped it.

mrsbyers · 30/06/2023 15:48

There’s a gap that is covered by metal comb like structures , a couple of those appear to have come loose / been sheared off leaving gap

greenacrylicpaint · 30/06/2023 16:09

there is a gap that is usually covered by a brush or a rubber lip to prevent this happening.

anytime you get annoyed because the escalator or walkway is switched off it's often because of a safety feature fail.

if you get a shoe lace or bag strap trapped in the mechanism it can pull you in.

orangeflags · 30/06/2023 16:12

Horrible. Not the same, but when I was a teenager I wore a floor length skirt on an escalator that got sucked into the side of the escalator. It was elasticated, so as the fabric got sucked in the skirt slowly dragged down until I was left in my pants and jumper. Luckily my mum was with me and she rushed down and pushed the emergency button to stop it. The skirt had to be cut away.

Before I even read the OPs post I knew this would be some in Far Eastern country. Happens all the time. Safety standards there are awful.

FloralVelvet · 30/06/2023 16:21

Got my skirt stuck in an escalator once, luckily with someone to hit the emergency stop button. I was fine obviously, skirt not, and spent hours until they eventually cut me out, taking it apart for quite a while

This poor poor woman. Quite despicable to photograph her.

Im incredibly sorry for the tragedy which has befallen her

Mariposista · 30/06/2023 16:37

I am really hoping that this is fake (as some sources are saying it is)

Exactly this 100%

I think she is already an amputee, they do. Not amputate your leg whilst you’re awake and then neatly fold your denims over it and all with minimal blood, in fact so little her jeans aren’t even stained.

happyfoot · 30/06/2023 16:44

This is very clearly fake- if she had just had her leg amputated she wouldnt be posed like that and there would be blood everywhere if her leg had literally just been crushed fgs

SingaporeSlinky · 30/06/2023 16:45

There’s no way they would amputate her leg in the airport, then transport her to hospital. And those photos are with the leg missing, but no blood, no oxygen mask, a neat folded jeans leg. None of it makes sense. I understand a piece of clothing getting stuck in the travelator combs but enough space for half a leg, including bone?

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 30/06/2023 16:46

Those pictures do not look real to me.

Hidinginaonesie · 30/06/2023 16:48

There is no way this is true. The article says the leg was mangled and chewed up but it has apparently already been re-attached. The woman photographed is clearly not in pain. There’s no blood. It’s nonsense.

Wineat5isfine · 30/06/2023 16:49

Definitely a fake news story. This lady / the area would be covered in blood!

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 30/06/2023 16:49

What a weird thing to make up. Have they staged the photos? To ask for money for rehab or something?

giraffetrousers · 30/06/2023 16:49

LOL that people think this is real- its very obviously not

ChocChipHandbag · 30/06/2023 16:50

I can’t believe the Daily Mail reported this as fact. No way has that woman just had her leg crushed and amputated. She looks like she has a mild cold!

Hugasauras · 30/06/2023 16:51

Oh I thought those pics were her back at the scene recreating it or something, not supposedly from the actual incident! How weird Confused

The article says her leg was re-attached so if she did go back to recreate a photo- wheres it gone?!

DyslexicPoster · 30/06/2023 16:55

If her leg went into such a small gap surely it would be grated to shreds? Youd never fit my leg into a two inch hole without bleeding to death.

Does her femoral artery stop just below her crotch?

Someone had their leg amputated at the scene on the A2 many years ago. It's something I really don't like to think about. Dr was airlifted in.

thatsn0tmyname · 30/06/2023 16:55

Horrendous. My mum worked in Debenhams in the 80s and an elderly lady got her foot dragged into an escalator. They had to cut her free. The brush strips were installed afterwards. I always remember that story when I step on an escalator.

My sil is Thai. She would take a selfie taking a shit if she could. She takes at least three a day for SM. She would definitely capture a life ending injury if it was about her AND she would look amazing doing it 🤣

Haffiana · 30/06/2023 17:00

Was this on the AI's day off? A toddler could have constructed a better photo than that.

Eyesopenwideawake · 30/06/2023 17:02

Just googled it and the story appears to be real. It was reported that she lost her foot/lower leg which explains no blood at the thigh.
