trigger warning

just saw this news about how a woman’s leg was caught in a travelator in Bangkok airport and had to be amputated. But… how? How can this happen - surely there needs to be some sort of gap for it to be pulled in. Very weird story

@orangeflags DS's girlfriend got her Doc Marten's laces caught on the top step of a tube escalator when they were about 14. The force pulled her over and was dragging at her foot. I grabbed her foot and shouted to the people on the escalator to press the stop button but they all just looked at me blankly. People were just stepping over her when they got to the top 😡until a man in a suit with a briefcase got to the top, leant down and ripped the laces out with the most almighty force so they snapped. He just walked off without a backward glance before I could even thank him.

It's scary how forceful escalators are. They can pull a child's foot in easily. It's far safer to get little ones to stand next to you in the middle and hold their hand rather than letting them stand on their own step.

Done like a true Londoner 😄
No speech necessary!

I think it’s fake news. Where has her leg gone? How come the travelator doesn’t look bent or broken? Also, her jeans are conveniently tucked under her ‘stump’. Where’s the blood, vomit and urine? I’m sure I’d have released everything in the same circumstance.

The airport has confirmed the incident on their social media as well as in more reputable papers then the DM.

Myworldjusthim · 30/06/2023 21:29

It’s real news.

shes sat like that and it looks like her legs already amputated but I think it’s actually inside the gap and trapped in that picture.

How horrific for the poor lady. So sad

swanling · 30/06/2023 21:33

Distributing photos of someone in such a vulnerable and traumatic situation is unethical.

Ormally · 30/06/2023 21:34

Had a friend who stopped an escalator when (but not in enough time) a poor dog had its claws taken into the comb, which pulled them out. It was in agony. Please don't procrastinate if you think someone might need the red button.

Myworldjusthim · 30/06/2023 21:35

it was a travelator like u get at airports, not an escalator.

huntingcunting · 30/06/2023 21:51

I thought the photo was of her with the leg stuck inside the travelator before the amputation. It's clearly not after amputation!
Some of the other stuff sounds a bit odd though, such as how she was in a wheelchair. Why wasn't she on a stretcher? Surely you'd need a lie down after that trauma.
And if you have to have an emergency amputation is it done under local anaesthetic??

Horrible. Not the same, but when I was a teenager I wore a floor length skirt on an escalator that got sucked into the side of the escalator. It was elasticated, so as the fabric got sucked in the skirt slowly dragged down until I was left in my pants and jumper. Luckily my mum was with me and she rushed down and pushed the emergency button to stop it. The skirt had to be cut away.

Sorry but this sounds hilarious

They work in the same way, it's essentially just a track continually going round. A shoe or a limb isn't enough to stop the action which is how people can get dragged in.

alienslove · 30/06/2023 22:03

I know someone whose child got their shoe stuck down the side of an escalator on London Underground only about 4 years ago... shoe was mangled, luckily foot was fine... never put your foot along the edge

orangeflags · 30/06/2023 22:04

@Helpmeimtired It was to my mum Grin. Fourteen year old girl with a big audience in a busy town centre on a Saturday. In my pants

PegasusReturns · 30/06/2023 22:13

I spent many years living in Asia and this is absolutely believable.

I have personally witnessed 4 incidents on escalators where shoes and toes have been sucked into the end/side of the escalator.

usually it’s a combination of soft shoes (do NOT wear flip flops or crocs on escalators/travelators) and poor safety.

but it’s an alarmingly frequent issue.

blueshoes · 30/06/2023 22:57

Daily Mail now reporting that the son saw officers carry her amputated leg away in a foam box.

Notg · 30/06/2023 23:03

This news story has given me a new fear of escalators which I never knew I had.

Abouttimemum · 30/06/2023 23:09

Yeah the pictures are of her leg stuck in the machinery, not post amputation.

RainySnows99 · 01/07/2023 21:41

Most of the comments in another paper said it was B.S. including medics who said there would be all kinds of medical equipment around if it was any sort of medical emergency -. It wouldn't look neat and she wouldn't be conscious .She looks like she's stopping a sneeze in that picture !

LemonTreeSkies · 18/07/2023 05:30

I’m not sure I’d be that composed if my leg was trapped in that.

My sons shoe got stuck in an elevator the other week - luckily we w were near the bottom and some very helpful men leased the stop button. I'd managed to get his foot out of his shoe and sock and but if it had been seconds later he would have lost his foot for sure. Still not sure how it happened. Thankfully he's ok but it could have been much worse.

BlueThursday · 18/07/2023 06:48

Her handbag is remarkably unscathed
