Do you lock your doors

When you’re in the house? So you’ve come in, shut the door behind you and you’re going to be in for at least a few hours. Do you lock it behind you or leave it unlocked because you’re in? We leave ours unlocked and DM has made me promise never to do it again but I can’t get out of the habit! She locks hers when she gets in even if she’ll only be in for 5 minutes before going out again, whereas unless we’re going to bed, ours stayed unlocked.

should I be making more of a conscious effort to lock it, lest a murderer or a burglar comes in or am I in the majority?

Always as we have chancers and druggies wandering around our area who break in frequently wherever they can (and the police don't care).

ClarityClankrant · 30/06/2023 14:33

Front door, back door, always locked.

megletthesecond · 30/06/2023 14:41

Yes, front door always locked. Someone could be in and out in seconds as it's almost right on a public path. I have a ring doorbell too.
Back door not always locked in daytime as back garden gate is locked.

CookieCutter8 · 30/06/2023 14:41

I always lock as soon as I come in. Someone could easily sneak in - it does happen!

Dolallytats · 30/06/2023 14:42

My front door is on the latch all day so everyone can come and go as they please. It's shut at night, not locked, but it's a door that you need a key to get in even if not locked. I leave the door on the latch when I take the kids to school as well.
I live in London, but also like in a first floor flat with a security door. I also have a cockapoo who would lick you to death if you broke in, but whos bark sounds like a Rottweiler so you're not likely to!! I do lock the door if my husband isn't coming home that night. The balcony is locked at night, but not during the day.

AuntieMarys · 30/06/2023 14:43

All doors locked here

FuppingEll · 30/06/2023 14:46

Nah. I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere ireland. Nothing ever happens here, the chances of anyone trying to sneak in are pretty much nil and if they did the dogs would alert me before they even had the handle pushed down.

crossstitchingnana · 30/06/2023 14:47

I keep mine locked after an ex-colleague was followed home and raped. In the middle of the day. And, a couple of years ago burglars were walking in and taking what they could. I live rurally btw.

LoisPrice · 30/06/2023 14:52

Front doors unlocked, when we go to bed it’s locked

amusedbush · 30/06/2023 14:53

Our current house and the flat we lived in previously both have/had doors that open from both sides unless you lock it with a key. I really should fit a Yale so it bolts automatically when you close it but we need a new front door anyway so I keep putting it off.

I always keep the door locked at all times. As soon as I get home, I lock it. DH had a habit of leaving it unlocked and he would laugh at me when I pointed out that anyone could walk in off the street. Then one day I was alone in our old flat and DH hadn't locked the door when he left for work, and two men walked right in after mis-counting the floors trying to visit my upstairs neighbour. They apologised profusely but it gave me the fright of my life! DH started locking the door after that...

BarrelOfOtters · 30/06/2023 15:00

Don't even always lock front or back if we are out. Sometimes forget/sometimes just nipping round the block with the dog. Live in a very low crime area, it gets reported on local radio if someone bashes another car in the supermarket and has driven off without leaving a note.

We've forgotten to lock it at night.

Usually when we are in the porch door is shut (not locked) and front door open as the catch is a bit sticky so it's easier that way.

Friend round the corner locks her doors all the time as soon as she gets in the house it's locked behind her. Years of living in Manchester before she moved here.

BarrelOfOtters · 30/06/2023 15:01

No we don't and the dog is a useless guard dog...she'll be upstairs on our bed legs in the air snoring while the front door is being opened and parcels left in the hall....

EllaRaines · 30/06/2023 15:15

Front door is never locked unless we are away overnight/holiday. You can't tell
From the outside and we don't live on a road.

DogInATent · 30/06/2023 15:21

heartofglass23 · 30/06/2023 09:14

Anyone could just wander into your house and murder/rape you!

How are you not terrified??

You're statistically more likely to be raped/murdered by someone already in the house.

But we always look the front door, unless one of us is just nipping to the shop or taking the dog out and the other is downstairs.

PeaceGoodMercutio · 30/06/2023 15:23

Too right!
When I lived with my Mum as a teenager, my brother's weird associates used to just let themselves in or appear at the window then come in. Was really creepy.
Now I lock the doors religiously.
Plus, some absolute horror stories on that Rav TV show in the morning. (Don't recommend it, very bad TV).

ImaMumtoaboy · 30/06/2023 15:26

Locked.
Front door when you close it you need a key to open it from the outside, you just pull down handle to open from the inside. Locked at bedtime. When Im home alone when dh is working late or out I lock it.
Back door is always locked unless we are sitting in the back garden

BCCoach · 30/06/2023 15:27

Back door is rarely used and always locked. Front door locks itself automatically if closed , but if its a warm day we tend to leave the front door open all day anyway to get a breeze through the house.

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 30/06/2023 15:28

Our front door is always locked - we only ever use the back door anyway, and obviously lock it at night and when we're out. When we're in, it's unlocked

Yep - most rapists already have the front door key.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/06/2023 16:41

as @EllaRaines only if we go on holiday.
though once we went abroad for two weeks and left the front door wide open!

Perfectweatherforducks · 30/06/2023 16:42

We lock doors at night but never in the day, not even when we are out. Unless we are away overnight and then we will lock them.

MyMachineAndMe · 30/06/2023 16:45

No. We live in the middle of a big council estate that probably looks rough but actually feels fine. My dc are in and out all the time as they're playing with their friends so locking it seems a bit pointless. Anything of any value is hidden from view of a sneak thief and I spend most of my time in the dining room where the side door is anyway.

elm26 · 30/06/2023 16:46

My door is always locked as it locks automatically when it shuts. Annoying if you've accidentally left your keys inside 🙄

Ragwort · 30/06/2023 16:50

No ... except at bedtime (occasionally forget), we live in a fairly low crime area.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/06/2023 16:52

No, the fron door is unlocked and the backdoor is usually wide open. I'd have to life in a very different area to change this.
