Do you lock your doors

When you’re in the house? So you’ve come in, shut the door behind you and you’re going to be in for at least a few hours. Do you lock it behind you or leave it unlocked because you’re in? We leave ours unlocked and DM has made me promise never to do it again but I can’t get out of the habit! She locks hers when she gets in even if she’ll only be in for 5 minutes before going out again, whereas unless we’re going to bed, ours stayed unlocked.

should I be making more of a conscious effort to lock it, lest a murderer or a burglar comes in or am I in the majority?

Our front door can't be opened from the outside without a key.

The back door is left unlocked when we are at home and we're open plan downstairs, so nobody could creep in unnoticed. We have a sturdy bolt on our back gate anyway.

I used to lock the doors, to stop toddlers getting out. Now I very rarely lock my doors.

InSpainTheRain · 01/07/2023 15:50

Yes ours is always locked - back and front. Seeing as some random guy turned up once and my Mum (late 80s, mind wandering) let him in and he went upstairs - there is absolutely no bloody way I'm not locking it!!

Don’t most doors “lock” anyway when you close them, like a Yale or Chubb?

I think 4 out of 11 places I've lived have had that sort of lock, so - in my admittedly limited experience - no, 'most' don't.

TinaDina · 01/07/2023 16:47

Nope, I try to remember to lock the door before going to bed or going out if nobody else is in. But, if someone's at home and it's not night-time the door is always unlocked.

We're rural, have a large dog, and get on well with our neighbours - who have an adult daughter and usually at least one person tends to be in at theirs at any given time.

Our last car had a fault that meant the alarm went off within a few minutes of it being locked so I never ever locked it, either. Granted, it was a bit of a rust bucket so I doubt anyone would be interested in trying to nick it anyway.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/07/2023 18:01

I specifically ordered my front door with a lock that locks from the outside. I'd be useless at remembering to lock it. And none of my friends or family would dream of visiting without telling me first.

We are on the Isle of Man. We never lock the door. I know people who don’t even own a key to the house and leave it open even when going on holidays

usernother · 01/07/2023 18:17

Depends where you live. I don't atm but when I've lived in rougher areas I always did. Last place we were advised by police to do so because their was a spate of intruders just walking into people's houses during the day or evening, grabbing what they could and leaving.

usernother · 01/07/2023 18:18

Obviously I lock mine now when we go to bed

TrustyRusty68 · 01/07/2023 20:51

Absolutely always keep all doors locked all of the time. There’s changers everywhere!! Our uncle left his back door unlocked - someone came in & nicked his PS from the kitchen diner whilst he was in the living room. Definitely not worth the risk for the effort of turning a key!!

Thursa · 01/07/2023 20:57

We live in America now. Doors and windows are locked. When we lived in Scotland we got up in the morning, unlocked the doors, and didn’t lock up till nighttime. I even went out shopping and left them unlocked.

talktalk66 · 02/07/2023 07:35

Our front door doesn't open from the outside without a key. In the summer, when we're home, our garden doors are open completely as they lead straight from the kitchen to the patio which we use a lot. In the winter we keep the garden doors locked even when we're home. My friend has a front door that she has to lock and when she is inside, she's always scrambling to find the key to open it. I keep wondering what would happen if there were a fire in the middle of the night and she had to scramble to find the key to get out.

BunnyBum · 02/07/2023 10:52

Always lock ourselves in with the front door. One afternoon i was in the living room and noticed a man come to the front door. Had a feeling he was a wrong un. I walked to the hallway to go answer and he was trying the handle!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 10/07/2023 20:10

Our front door locks behind us anyway.

Back door is always unlocked unless we're in bed/out - our garden is enclosed (6ft high walls/fences) and locked anyway.

Dogsitterwoes · 10/07/2023 20:45

Not here as it's a safe village, back door is often unlocked in the day. When I lived in dodgy town, always locked.

Poppysmom22 · 29/12/2023 18:34

Nope never locked back door front door usually locked but we have form for forgetting we do have 2 massive dogs though who are a bit spicy so anyone who comes in would get a hell of a surprise comprising of 80kg and 84 teeth
