How is Paris at the moment?! (Holiday next week)

We have a lovely holiday planned in central Paris next week but I’m feeling a bit nervous looking at the news.

I’ve been in Paris before during unrest and it’s been easy to avoid but this is looking pretty grim. Any advice?

No advice, but I would have thought things would be back to normal by next week. You only see the worst of thinks on TV.

Belindabelle · 30/06/2023 17:07

Just caught the news and advice is not to travel to France. Hopefully it will all be back to normal by the time you go.

maranella · 30/06/2023 17:10

At the moment, the FCO does not advise against all but essential travel to France. From what I can tell, most of the disturbance has been in Nanterre, with a couple of isolated incidents in central Paris. I'd just keep an eye on things and make a decision closer to the time of departure. These things can either fizzle out quickly or escalate further - only time will tell which.

I am french and follow the news, i would not recommend going right now.
its not just in Paris but i would not go anywhere near Paris in the next few weeks, they are talking curfews in some areas.

My partner is due to go home to Paris on Wednesday for 2 weeks. We're waiting to see what the French government decide re calling a state of emergency, which has been suggested. Also a curfew on public transport after 9.00 pm possibly.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/06/2023 17:35

I swear there has been unrest every time I've been in Paris. The place I've felt really unsafe was on the Metro - large aggressive gangs rampaging through at any time of day.

It's hard to know from this distance how much it would affect you. I would probably chance it tbh because I 💕 Paris.

Keepitonthelow · 30/06/2023 17:43

Are you taking children?

Upsizer · 30/06/2023 18:27

I’m taking teens!

they might have a teen curfew… I wonder if I will be able to claim on insurance if so??

@TheYearOfSmallThings It’s cost a FORTUNE to book - we’ve thrown so much money at it. So we will probably chance it too. I’ve been in Paris during riots before and it hasn’t worried me, but things do look pretty grim at the moment.

It’s currently the top news on the news, I wouldn’t go.

Chocolateship · 30/06/2023 18:36

No I wouldn't, things might be back to normal by next week but similarly they might not be.

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 18:38

We went at the time of the yellow vests, but only saw a small protest, it’s definitely looks worse atm though.

Eh. I remember when the London riots were on - they started less than a mile from me, and friends outside the UK were advising me to flee because on TV it looked like the whole city was on fire... In reality it minimally affected anything outside of Tottenham and Croydon, and only limited parts of those.

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/06/2023 18:40

Some friends just arrived in Paris last night (from Switzerland). They're staying at a (swanky) hotel on avenue Georges V. They seem to have spent most of today having a long, expensive lunch. Zero impact to them (so far at least).

I took my children out for coffee during the London riots. There was no trouble where we were and it was like any other day.

rivercobbler · 30/06/2023 21:56

We are just back, it was fine where we were.

allmyliesaretrue · 30/06/2023 22:06

DH and I were in Paris at the time the 'gilets jaunes' were raging. All of the ATMs were covered over, shops boarded up etc. We went for dinner in a restaurant where all the glass had been shattered but not broken. We didn't see any rioting.

I was also out for dinner in London in Langan's Bistro (!) in 1990 while the poll tax riots were happening. Again, there was no rioting where we were.

I also survived the Troubles in NI. All the world ever saw was the violence, but amidst all of it, huge numbers of ordinary people were just getting on with their lives the best they could.

I'm sure you could manage if you're savvy, and don't stay out too late at night?

This is far worse than gilet jaunes. They were almost peaceful!

mrsneate · 30/06/2023 22:17

My son is going with the school next week. I generally don't watch the news so this is the first I've heard 😳

The current riots in France are far worse than the London riots.

VintageThoughts · 30/06/2023 22:18

No advice but following. DD due to go on a school trip there in a couple of weeks. Really not sure I want her to go.
