How is Paris at the moment?! (Holiday next week)

We have a lovely holiday planned in central Paris next week but I’m feeling a bit nervous looking at the news.

I’ve been in Paris before during unrest and it’s been easy to avoid but this is looking pretty grim. Any advice?

It is very difficult to assess. As I previously said one part of a city can be in a bad way and life goes on a few miles away. I checked Twitter before setting out and my area seemed ok.

I have seen men in Paris dressed in black shooting in the air.

I can't work out of retweeted posts I see on my timeline are real from Paris today or from elsewhere in the world, I don't know if people are being racist or if it's genuine.

My son is going with the school next week. I generally don't watch the news so this is the first I've heard 😳

Not sure that will go ahead.

UlrikakakaJ · 30/06/2023 22:36

enjoy the Bastille Day fly past - watch from the pont neuf!

LawksaMercyMissus · 30/06/2023 22:37

I was in Paris on Wednesday when it all kicked off, no sign of trouble in the centre or south, but I saw a huge convoy of police vans when I was leaving yesterday.

I'd wait and see what happens with the curfew/public transport and FO advice.

Whataretalkingabout · 30/06/2023 22:40

Personally. I wouldn't go to Paris next week if you paid me. And I have friends and family there. But you do you!

Upsizer · 30/06/2023 22:44

I’m a bit worried that the teenage curfews in other French cities might extend to Paris. Would insurance kick in if the teenagers were under curfews?? If not they will be stuck in the apartment…!

I agree that Twitter is really unhelpful: most videos and post just look like racist dog whistling shit

Oh right, the multi-imprisoned violent thug racist alleged-sex-attacking leader of the modern day NF has stuck his oar in. That's me decided then, he's nothing if not honest and reliable.

I honestly dont think its safe for you to go. Check if insurance can refund and go another time.

Truthseeker456 · 30/06/2023 22:48

Make sure you look at videos on twitter if you haven't already, I wouldn't be going

Upsizer · 30/06/2023 23:00

Who are these posters recommending racist twitter videos as a news source? From a troll farm?!

Latest: French DP has postponed his trip home to Paris next week. These riots are like nothing we have ever experienced in the UK!
Most of the rioters are young disaffected youth who were not part of the Gilet Jaune movement. It's very likely that restrictions/curfews will stay in place until after 14 July (Bastille Day) and 'les vacances' begin.

sunshinesupermum · 30/06/2023 23:02

Upsizer we are watching French news, not Twitter and DPs sister has just messaged him to say she is glad he isn't coming back home just now.

sunshinesupermum · 30/06/2023 23:06

PS Paris is under curfew from 9.00 pm re public transport also cinemas, theatres and shows. Don't know about museums.
For those who think things like this have happened in the UK (apart from NI Troubles?) we have never had any sort of curfew nor has tear gas been used by our police.

AllIsThat · 30/06/2023 23:10

The trouble is you don't know what people are tweeting if it's genuinely Paris today and I don't trust the BBC as I once did either.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/06/2023 18:38

Eh. I remember when the London riots were on - they started less than a mile from me, and friends outside the UK were advising me to flee because on TV it looked like the whole city was on fire... In reality it minimally affected anything outside of Tottenham and Croydon, and only limited parts of those.

On the other hand, it was fucking awful in Central Birmingham, but the news didn't really cover it until the riots hit Manchester and the Beeb workers in Media City panicked.

I lived in the centre, but worked in the suburbs. Everyone else in the office lived in the suburbs didn't believe how dangerous it was for me to travel home.

So there's no accounting for how accurate the news is.

HarrietofFire · 30/06/2023 23:13

We were in Paris last night and came to Belgium today. Literally no signs of unrest in the centre yesterday where we were and we wouldn't have known anything had been happening if it hadn't been for the BBC website.

Wallywobbles · 01/07/2023 06:53

Normally we get these things under control pretty quick. There were demonstrations and fires in other cities yesterday evening still.

I think the policeman has been arrested so hopefully that will help.

The policeman was arrested immediately, because it was thought it would help.

It didn't, but it seems to have pissed off the police unions.

Piscesmumma1978 · 01/07/2023 09:09

The travel guidance has been updated this morning. I should after last night more restrictions and curfews will be in place.

It doesn't seem to be settling x

Sunglassescase · 01/07/2023 10:29

Looks absolutely dreadful

GulesMeansRed · 01/07/2023 10:36

We were in Paris 4 years ago when the gilet jaunes were causing similar havoc.

my advice would be use your common sense. Tourist areas during the daytime will be fine. Just make sure you’re back to your hotel/ apartment before it gets dark at 10pm local time.

Moeben · 01/07/2023 10:43

They should cancel any school holidays it's not fair on the safety of the children and the family's at home worrying about them it is not a holiday with all the trouble that is going on you do not take chances with children's lives

Upsizer · 01/07/2023 11:55

I’m going to go - unless I can claim on my insurance I’m not going to lose my summer holiday!! And the forge in advice isn’t triggering insurance claims yet.

There was chaos at st Pancras Eurostar the other day due to issues in Paris - I think it could be a hassle doing what you want to do unless the situation is changed in some way - which it might.
