Pub grub, school meals chef know it all!

Turns out he was wrong about replacement of sugar.

Who cares

surely his heart was in the right place?

WandaWonder · 29/06/2023 11:25

I am sure he has done more good than any of us on here to help

Lesssugarketchup · 29/06/2023 11:25

I mean I can’t say I particularly like him and I find him rather sanctimonious

but seems a bit harsh to be smug about him being “wrong” about something like… sugar and wanting to limit intake

I care now I can't get a decent soft drink apart from Coke!

IsThat · 29/06/2023 11:25

Aspartame will be officially listed as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' in the World Health Organization's reclassification, according to insiders.

Those who will experience cancer care. Is he giving extra money to the NHS as compensation?

Well swapping sugar for sweetners wasn’t the right call but I don’t think he ever asked for that. The heart of his message was to stop kids from been feed junk and to be given real
food. I don’t think this anything to find fault with.

Rollercoaster1920 · 29/06/2023 11:28

Aspartame is a horrible additive. It's a laxative for one thing. This has been known for years.

It's a bit like the car emissions debacle which focuses on co2 which led everyone to diesel cars and the problematic particulates.

x2boys · 29/06/2023 11:31

I.really dislike Jamie Oliver
I find him smug and insufferable
But surely this wasn't all.down to.him ,he would have had to.consult experts etc.

Cvn · 29/06/2023 11:31

Do you have a source for the info on aspartame? I find it beyond frustrating that it's so difficult to find squash without added synthetic sweeteners - and that definitely got harder after the introduction of the sugar tax! Like many others, I've been saying for ages that the (insidious IMO) addition of sweeteners to everything is far worse than occasionally having a bit of sugar 🙄

You’re right, all he did was ask the government to make changes. It’s the government whose job it was to do the research, make and vote on law changes.

Nomorenonbinary · 29/06/2023 11:35

He didn't ask them to swap sugar for sweeteners though. He just highlighted that our kids were not getting the nutrition they needed.

I did not link as the daily mail has a WHO leak.

I still buy full sugar baked beans.

He really annoyed me with his campaign at the time, I predicated it would be shown he was wrong.

He should check his experts better before he pressures people into changing sugar for potentially getting cancer.

Jamie Oliver did not actively promote sweeteners. That was done by food producers and consumers.

Reformulating sugary products will mean that food companies will reduce sugar, but add more sweeteners, which is no better!
We’re aware of the worries surrounding sweeteners and we’re continuously interrogating research into these products. All sweeteners used in food and drinks have been tested and approved as safe by the European Food Safety Authority. The best way to avoid both sugar and sweeteners is to cook from scratch and choose water, diluted fresh juice or milk as an alternative to fizzy drinks.

But did he say sweetener was better than sugar?

IsThat · 29/06/2023 11:38

Nobody was going to buy baked beans for example with no substitute for sugar, this just shows he lacks the ability to think I things through.

OP posts:
ReluctantFishLady · 29/06/2023 11:39

He didn't advocate for replacement of sugar though did he? The food industry has a lot to answer for, and the governments that let them harm us with lobbying and inadequate legislation. I don't see what guilt Jamie Oliver should be carrying.

KnittedCardi · 29/06/2023 11:41

I don't drink many soft drinks, but those I do, I have been buying, for example, "original recipe" San Pellegrino. Full sugar and so much nicer.

Andanotherone01 · 29/06/2023 11:42

Aspartame is in bloody everything now even yogurts. I'm sure JO didn't intend for sugar to be replaced this way but unfortunately he isn't the sharpest knife in the box and he didn't consider the bigger picture of how food producers would get around the sugar tax. Now we're all suffering for it.

whatapity · 29/06/2023 11:42

As far as fizzy drinks go is it only Coca Cola not containing aspartame? I believe even Pepsi has some sweetener added now?

IsThat · 29/06/2023 11:44

So what did the brain box experts and Jamie think was going to replace sugar in tomato ketchup?

OP posts:
cooshin · 29/06/2023 11:44

Of all the people to blame for this is really doing think JO is it. Have you thought it through?

KnittedCardi · 29/06/2023 11:45

Stevia is better, but you can still taste that it isn't quite "right".

Is that fructose? I find that mildly better but yes, can still definitely taste the difference.

I can't stand him, advocating for great big unnecessary oil slicks on top of food then moaning about sugar.

Oh yes, San Pelegrino! I think Fentiman's also has full sugar. Though those are more expensive brands I think.
