I’m a type 1 diabetic, sugary snacks and drinks are plentiful in shops. I don’t find processed foods helpful, nor do I spill sugar or find if hard to clean my kitchen. Home made baked beans are barely complex.

Are you being obtuse?

You think old or disabled people could have different issues to you, like people have varying taste buds?

AlmondMoms 🙄

It isn’t me who is slow to understand. Are you able to explain how those of us who actually have type 1 diabetes, are denied foods or drinks that contain sugar?

bellac11 · 29/06/2023 18:55

I wont eat anything with artificial sweetners in. I notice this thread is really about aspartame, not all sweetners

I dont like sweet tastes and since I went lower carb, that has cut out most desires for sweet things, even fruit to some degree

I am a strong advocator for foods not being sweet unless they are specifically needed to be, ie some fruit and veg, sweets, cakes etc

There is no need for yoghurts to have added sugar, sauces dont need it apart from a pinch dependent on what it is, nothing should be in bread etc. Sugar is added to things that have no business being sweet

Im also a big fan of Jamie Oliver and this whole OP and some of the posts are completely bizarre

Admit that I haven't RTFT, but I have no time for JO.

He didn't advocate for artificial sweeteners no, but he did slap a big 'naughty' sign on sugary drinks whilst still putting it in his pasta sauces and homemade lemonade. And his desserts? No, they are a treat so fine. So is full fat coke to many people.

It was a stunt that was hypocritical. Don't start me on his breastfeeding campaign. Lovely that your wife had such a positive experience but stick to something you're qualified to talk about.

And on aspartame more generally...

It might be added as a possible carcinogenic to humans. This means there is limited evidence it's carcinogenic in humans, sufficient evidence in animals, OR strong evidence it has key characteristics of known carcinogens. One of the above.

If it is, it will sit alongside nickel, lead and your mobile phone. Also, aloe vera and exhaust fumes.

So much fuss is made over it, but it is a choice. Can you choose to avoid it by having natural sugars or sweeteners? Yes, although the UK market hasn't embraced Stevia recipes.

Do people choose to avoid other possible carcinogens with the same passion...?

Meanwhile, probable carcinogenics, where there is limited evidence in humans, but one of the other points (animals or characteristics) has been met. This is where your red meats, fried foods, and drinks served at over 65 degrees C sit. Also, night shifts and working as a hairdresser.

Known carcinogens include tobacco and sunbeds.

People continue to make their choices based on personal preference, risk assessments, and balance.

He is an Almond Mom who harms others with his virtue signalling - luxury beliefs, like many celebs now a days. He is controlling of others while displays of little control of himself - going by his unstable weight - and his advice is ill though through.

Ylvamoon · 29/06/2023 19:27

@IsThat who posted an article the thread about the super tasters 🤔
You obviously don't understand the wider issues of the food industry feeding us overly sweet foods.

😁 all Jamie Oliver ever did was highlight the issues around the overuse of sugar

😀 you said it yourself, sweetners & co are bad for our health on soo many levels

🤔 I still think that the concept of super tasters on this thread is a red herring

PS: I can @IsThat as many times as I like!

RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 29/06/2023 19:31

obesity is the second biggest risk factor for cancer. Replacing all the aspartame with sugar is a step backwards

He never asked for artificial sweeteners. He demanded that school meals be nutritious and cooked on site by real dinner ladies.

I'm with him.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 29/06/2023 19:45

@IsThat I think most of us a familiar with the term Almond Mom, and @Simonjt isn't the person who springs to mind when the term is mentioned.
You may think it is fun to mock a type 1 diabetic, alas alack you are in the minority. Homemade baked beans rock.

Gotta ask this, did you shove chips and burgers through the school fence when they made school meals healthier?

bellac11 · 29/06/2023 19:45

I feel like Ive stumbled on the 'too cool for school' room where people who are either ill informed or experts in their field are derided and dismissed

We've had enough of experts, we'll just call people silly childish names instead of wanting society to be more healthy

With respect because i usually find your posts quite informative
I.think the poster was referring to two different groups of people
Some people with physical.disabilities not tyoe.one diabetes may find processed food easier to manage
Im, still.learning about Diabetes my son wss recently diagnosed with type 3c diabetes but its treated the same as type one as in he's insulin dependent

I was.

Regards to diabetes type one, my SIL and her child are diagnosed, so she made requests on visits, that included cold sausages available to snack on and having sugar drinks available, other's seem to follow a different routine.

What you said @IsThat is Diabetics find a sugar snack or drink helpful. But now you really mean cold sausages?

So yet again: How has Jamie Oliver harmed you?

But there is a good alternative to aspartame

Stevia, and erythritol is good and natural sweeteners only why food manufactures wont used them?

Mummy0b · 29/06/2023 20:33

Fuck Jamie Oliver

Oblomov23 · 29/06/2023 20:47

I do have a problem with the sugar tax. The increase of aspartame. I think he has a lot to answer for.

Some companies have explored stevia as an alternative but the reality has always been that they aren't successful in the UK. It can have an aniseed-y after taste which puts some people off, so hitting the right balance to get the same taste we're used to without loosing sweetness or making it taste foul afterwards, is hard to master.

Coke Life for instance has been sold in about 50 countries, most with a slightly different balance of sugar to Stevia to suit market preferences, and mostly, it's flopped after a couple of years. In South America, the % of Stevia was much higher than anywhere else in the world. They made Sprite Zero with Stevia as standard, and then had to revert to aspartame due to complaints.

It will take time for our taste buds to get used to Stevia or alternatives to sugar and / or aspartame, but in that time, sales plummet and manufacturers freak out.

Another reason I dislike JO - he really took aim at Coca Cola with his sugar tax crusade. Like many others, he called them out but ignored Pepsi who also use sugars - and aspartame. BUT he didn't hate it enough to stop selling it in his restaurants, as it made him money...

If you don't like aspartame, don't drink it.

I've got a handful of fizzy drinks knocking around the house, non have any sweeteners in. It ain't rocket science.

If you look up the science, it does not matter if your fizzy drinks have sugar or sweetener, they make you fat and increase your risk of cancer. By about 113%

I don't drink sweet drinks.

I have baked beans and ketchup with sugar, occasionally. I like chocolate when I am due a period, I have an actual hormonal need, if I don't have extra food and sweet food those few days I find that my mood is really bad and I cry.

The sugar tax only applies to soft drinks, not to naked beans or chocolate Confused
