I'm going to be acquiring a small campervan soon. I do love a nice village. What are some lovely ones that DH and I - sometimes just I solo - can visit?
Could be that they're pretty, historically interesting, other places of interest nearby, lovely shops, near some natural beauty... which villages do you love?

TIA 🌺

Ovingham and Ovington in Northumberland are beautiful

@beguilingeyes , we once visited Bosham* when there was a flower festival at the ancient church. Before we left, one of the attendants showed us marks beside one of the doors apparently made by crusaders who’d sailed from there. Some marks were crosses, but the ‘cross’ mark was made only if they’d come safely back. When they hadn’t, the marks were just the uprights.

We’d never have noticed them if they hadn’t been pointed out.

Re the ‘Bozzum’ pronunciation, Winston Churchill is reputed to have remarked that it was neither one thing nor the other. (Bosom or bottom.) 😂

DL11. It only has a population of 724 but has gorgeous little cafe's and shops and a PO/Shop. The public loo's are 20p a go and also there's a Disabled loo. Utterly magnificent countryside and lovely fresh air!

Eyam is historically interesting.

You could visit Ilam and Dovedale whist you're in the area.

I came on to say Eyam. Lots of other lovely towns & villages nearby. Tissington is lovely (but very small) as well.

ThisIsTrifficult · 29/06/2023 11:00

I walked from dovedale in the peaks and the route ran through milldale and alstonefield. I thought they were beautiful.

I like Newent, but it is a town albeit smaller than many large villages.
Benson in Oxfordshire is well worth a visit. Lovely café on the riverside.

Mells in Somerset
Shere near Guildford is beautiful ditto Albury (do vist the Blue Pool, and while you're that way Shamley Green and also Cranleigh is a large village, very nice.
Hambleden Bucks is lovely too.
Singleton West Sussex (I like the Weald & Downland Museum also West Dean gardens/cafe recommended.

So many in the Lake District. Also the in Eden Valley as you cross from the NW to NE of England along the line of Hadrians Wall.
Northumberland is a gem of a place to. Lovely beaches and never that busy. Alnwick has an amazing 2nd hand book shop - Barter Books.
Happy campering!

Lindy2 · 29/06/2023 11:48

Broadhembury in Devon is a tucked away gem of a picturesque village.

In Buckinghamshire Old Beaconsfield is pleasant.

Jumping in a campervan and exploring where ever you fancy sounds fabulous. Have an amazing time!

Broadway

Bearpawk · 29/06/2023 11:56

Alfriston in Sussex
Balanchland, consett. Beautiful old stone village with a fine dining pub called the lord Crewe with beautiful walks and views.

Bearpawk · 29/06/2023 11:59

Middleton-in-Teasdale is lovely too with some nice waterfalls nearby (high force and low force) and lots of camping options in nearby Mickleton, too

Bearpawk · 29/06/2023 11:59

*Teesdale ! Bloody predicative text

Also Filey!

deeplybaffled · 29/06/2023 12:24

And Fordingbridge in Hampshire

Mufflette · 29/06/2023 12:29

Lavenham in Suffolk - and if you need somewhere to camp nearby then take the campervan to the White Horse pub in Edwardstone which is nearby!

lovelydaytoday77 · 29/06/2023 12:33

East Hendred, Oxfordshire. It's beautiful. Amazing forest and field walks. Road that runs through it ends on the Ridgeway walk. 2 pubs. Tiny museum open at weekends. Everyone says hello as you walk past them. Bliss.

Imo Bibury is vastly overrated (there are some truly beautiful cotswold villages completely off the beaten track that make bibury look like a swindon suburb) but if you do go there, make sure it's off-season.

Ooh such as? Would love some more Cotswolds recommendations that are off the beaten track...

DMIL had a friend in Stanton (near Broadway).
Picture postcard perfect village. 🙂

Delighted to see all the recommendations in Northumberland and North Pennines ... DPs live in Scotland so it would make a nice stopover to visit some of these villages on our way up there.

Thanks again for all the input. Looks like we're spoilt for choice.

We have some nice ones in Somerset , cheddar (very touristy but quite spectacular) Dunster, Clovelly (Devon) Lacock (Wiltshire) , castle Cary, Bruton

TheDogsMother · 29/06/2023 14:52

Come to the South Downs National Park. In the West Sussex section I can recommend

Petworth
Lurgashsall
Amberley
Singleton
Midhurst
Steyning

Drive the A272 which is lovely especially the stretch from Midhurst to Winchester through the Meon Valley.

Just outside the National Park try Arundel.

I'm very envious OP

Ovingham and Ovington in Northumberland are beautiful

Ovington is in Co Durham, surely? Many years ago, I helped build steps from a pub to the river, in Ovingham. I thought it was called The Swan, but it doesn't seem to exist...
