Is there sympathy for consultants striking?

Just as the thread title says, do you feel sympathy for the consultant doctors pay demands. I understand their pay has not gone up for many years meaning they have had a cut in real terms. That being said a quick google tells me they start on 88k and have regular pay rises not based on performance.
They are hardly on the bread line are they?

The expansion of med places is obviously needed and I agree JD should have improved hours and conditions but why the hell should CONSULTANTS on the top rate of pay be striking for more money??

It’s obscene.

Do you think it will magically solve all of our issues if we pay consultants more? Of course it won’t! I think we probably pay consultants TOO much, they all seem to retire at 55!!! The only place that benefits is the golf course.

It’s a total disgrace to the integrity of the profession.

You clearly have no knowledge or insight about the situation. Let me guess, Daily Mail reader and Tory voter.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 12:31

You are reduced to pathetic insults because your weak greedy argument just doesn’t stack up.

Doctors are leaving to work in other countries where they are better paid in their droves. I work in the NHS and it is terrifying how many are leaving. It kinda doesn't matter whether people think they're well paid or not - other countries are offering more and doctors are voting with their feet. If we want to retain a functioning healthcare system we're going to have to pay them more to be able to retain them.

not going to read 14 pages of thread so just to say that I agree with this.

they will go where they are better paid and have better conditions or retire early if they can

there are limits to what they signed up to when they entered the profession and providing care does not mean limitless commitment

as a parent, would any of us wish to see/encourage our dc considering entering the profession with their working conditions expected to be as it currently stands?

"I am not a Tory voter thanks! So this IS politically driven - why would you even mention it otherwise? I wouldn’t dream of second guessing your party of choice, how is it relevant?? "

And yet you brought up politics over and over.
Maybe the NHS needs reform. First of all the Government would have to acknowledge that for some of the best health care in the world (like France) governments pay a higher proportion of GDP than we currently spend.

Did you call me demented earlier?

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 12:57

Your argument is demented. I don’t know you personally to comment.

Of course move to Republic of Ireland.
It’s the obvious choice, given you are from NI and have already have worked/ lived in dublin

the consultant salary is €275 k not €210k
The Uk starting salary is £88k . You only get to 119k after 20 years as a consultant ( so probably in your late 50s at the earliest)

It’s a no brainier to go to Ireland.

Consultant salary in ROI is not 275! I’m at the top of the scale and my salary is 252. (Not complaining, before anyone jumps down my throat, just correcting misinformation)

I am never going to agree with what you are doing. Most of you earn rock star salaries, and in later years become incredibly wealthy.

I have a very low opinion of those that claim to ‘care’ about patients, and accept all the benefits, job security, privilege, pensions and wealth of the profession, only to let down millions of patients - some no doubt that will not survive the delay, is utterly unconscionable on your current salaries.

Bloody cut back your fast cars, luxury holidays like everyone else has had to do in this country and elsewhere in Europe. You are not special with a free pass to weaponise life saving care to people for the sake of greed.

I am out. Your logic and excuses fail dismally.

The NHS will certainly NOT be fixed with 35% ransom demands!!!! Seriously are you for real.

Seriously are you for real? Rock star salaries, what an absolute joke. What planet are you on? Please, please be out. We are sick listening to your unhinged nonsense.

A cool quarter of a million doesn’t look like an hardship to me, see above. So pipe down.

Jealous of what?
You are on the breadline aren’t you?
Reduced to just a few gardening hours now every week and switching from the Maldives to Mauritius for goodness sake. Won’t someone show some empathy for the folks over there in the echo chamber.

Eat your heart out @GCalltheway .And med school would have been such an easy option for someone of your calibre too. 🙄😂

I have a far better career thanks, your superior tone is not terribly attractive. Perhaps you need the extra income to pay for friends.

Maggiethecat · 01/07/2023 15:23

@GCalltheway - well lucky you!
meanwhile someone has to do the dirty work, put in the long hours and should expect to be paid well for it.

Dirty work? Is that how you see your patients?

This thread has been a shocking eye opener for me.

Funny that you think that everyone who supports the consultants is a medic.

I highly doubt that somehow. Most good careers need some basic comprehension skills. And purely for illustrative purposes....(drum roll)for the fortieth time - I am not a medic 😂😂😂

And wait with bated breath…. No one actually gives a damn!

The striking thing is that had the posters that are medics on here put that greed and ruthlessness into a career with Goldmans they would have easily made the six figure sums are looking for without the strikes or the ‘dirty work’ as clearly the patients needs are not remotely important to them

Sorry I was a bit off- maybe new contract will be €275k?

Either way, €252k or €275k, the Uk offer of £88k is miles off if it wants to recruit or retain consultants
