Is there sympathy for consultants striking?

LadyTemperance · 28/06/2023 10:08

Just as the thread title says, do you feel sympathy for the consultant doctors pay demands. I understand their pay has not gone up for many years meaning they have had a cut in real terms. That being said a quick google tells me they start on 88k and have regular pay rises not based on performance.
They are hardly on the bread line are they?

They’re doing the hard grind that your career is so superior to. But do keep trying to spin the dirty work reference.

Good thing that all of them didn’t end up in banking and that many are going a good job looking after us under difficult circumstances.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 16:02

Hard grind? Have you actually met a consultant professionally or personally? Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

Maggiethecat · 01/07/2023 16:04

You’ll be surprised to learn that I have.
I suppose they’re all sitting around on their fannies then.

Im married to one. Guess where he is right now at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon? Yep in the hospital, and he’s been there since 8am. I will shocked if I see him before 7pm, and no he didn’t have a day off in the week.

In what world are the numbers you are posting not enough? Or have you posted to be goady?

Could you show me where I said they’re not enough, please? Cos I’m certain I never said that. And in fact I clearly said in my post that i wasn’t complaining and was just correcting misinformation. I also said it was ROI and as we are not striking, I’ve no idea why you’ve decided I said it wasn’t enough. Unless you were rushing to be outraged so much you didn’t read my post properly?

Sorry I was a bit off- maybe new contract will be €275k?

Either way, €252k or €275k, the Uk offer of £88k is miles off if it wants to recruit or retain consultants

Nope, new contract won’t be that at all. Will be more or less comparable to current one.

But agree, the U.K. is not competitive at all when you look at us here in ROI

You have posted your vey impressive salary on a thread discussing consultants striking for more money and the (lack of) public support for it!

Of course it’s incredibly hard to imagine why on gods earth you all need a salary rise on this current stratospheric salary level, and why you would choose to harm patients in the process to achieve it - that’s what most of us are wondering out loud 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

WTAH! < bangs head on desk>

Maggiethecat · 01/07/2023 16:23

You do realise that there’s a difference in the earnings or are you not paying attention?

Maggiethecat · 01/07/2023 16:24

Think that head needs more than a bang 🙄

That’s the salary she earns in another country. Where doctors are not going on strike.

And wait with bated breath…. No one actually gives a damn!

The striking thing is that had the posters that are medics on here put that greed and ruthlessness into a career with Goldmans they would have easily made the six figure sums are looking for without the strikes or the ‘dirty work’ as clearly the patients needs are not remotely important to them

You clearly do though as you keep hurling insults at anyone you think is a consultant. It's patently obvious to a normal person that they don't want to work for 'Goldmans'. Sure many of them could have done if that's the path they'd chosen but they wanted to do something more meaningful with a human benefit. Just because they want a good salary to reflect their skills doesn't make them pantomime villains. The crazy on here is astounding.

So we are supposed to believe that this poster earns double in Ireland of all places compared to the city of London for instance? I am calling absolute BS on this, because I know many consultants in London and all of their salaries start with a 2 and many significantly upward of that!!

Stop pleading poverty! Everyone knows it is total BS.

Meaningful? You find striking for more money allowing patients to suffer and potentially die whilst calling said patients ‘dirty work’ meaningful?!!
👵
It beggars belief.

@GCalltheway

So, you know some rich consultants and you're jealous of their lifestyle?

Yes, you are supposed to believe it. NHS consultant payscales are publicly available, take a look. Minimum is £88k, maximum (after 20 years as a consultant) is £119k.

The NHS payscale is national, regardless of where you work. You get £2700 per year more for working in London. Anyone who is a London consultant who has pay of £200k is doing significant amounts of private work.

@GCalltheway - this is what’s very unattractive - distorting comments to assist your argument.

I have made it clear that I am not a medic so please stop trying to spin the dirty work as attributed to the medics on here.

Maggiethecat · 01/07/2023 17:00

@Saschka - she’s not interested in the facts so set is she in her tirade nor the pp’s comments about the long hours of grind that her Dh does - all fairytale, fabricated by greedy consultants.

I don’t know a single consultant working solely for the NHS! Not one. They all split their weeks between private work and NHS.
Making significantly more money than advertised on here. All have gorgeous cars, nice homes- at least one, and dc in private education.

Gas lighting the public is not cool. Put your begging bowls away it’s embarrassing.

Irish salary scale for contrast.

“Ireland of all places” - seriously, how incredibly rude. Ireland is a prosperous EU country. So you are xenophobic as well?

I am just back from a conference in Ireland and as charming as it is, it’s very run down and very 1970s. It probably has to pay more to get people to relocate there. It has limited opportunities

Vinvertebrate · 01/07/2023 17:11

Married to a consultant who won’t be striking. He mainly works 9-5, has a large PP and brings home upwards of £250k per year. One on-call every 3 months or so. There is such a vast difference in workload between specialisms that it’s like comparing different jobs.

I’d be very happy with a public/private system that allowed Dr’s to be paid more, but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect the taxpayer to match those higher salaries (which are funded via revenue from private services) in the NHS.

Brilliant, nice of him to consider the wider profession and those he has helped pull the ladder up after himself, ew.
