Bloody Buggering Bollocks!

Bought two new sofas (light coloured). Two days after the sofa arrived my mum accidentally tipped black tea down the cushion of the arm of one of the sofas. DH quickly had to strip the cover off and soak it in water. Slight stain left which we can see but anyone else wouldn't notice unless pointed out.

Two days later I noticed black marks on the new sofa where I had been sitting. Turns out that in the heat I apparently turn the gold plated wrist band of my watch black. I have then managed to wipe this all over the seat of the sofa. DH cleans the sofa with Dr Oitken and luckily a crisis is averted.

Fast forward to tonight and our new carpet was fitted earlier today. DM comes over to see the finished lounge and as I put a cup of tea (black again) on the coffee table I knocked it and poured black tea on our new carpet and scald my DM's foot BlushBlush DH quickly absorbs the tea using paper towel and has gently cleaned the carpet with a diluted carpet cleaner. He says he can still see a stain but I'm hoping it's his imagination!

I've come to bed now and said I'm not setting foot in that bloody lounge again!! It's jinxed.

Brand new wood effect .lino throughout the ground floor (easier with dog, cats and me needing walkimg aids). It had been down a week, hubs was using a stanley blade to open a box on the floor. Blade slipped.Cut in the lino. Two days later, red wine on the brand new, silver, too big for the machine rug. A week after that the bloody hellhound collie got hold of a bottle of linseed oil.The jade rug was bathed in it. 1 thrown out rug, one vanish-treated rug amd invisible tape on the lino later & we've been ok since.

Hopefully this means you've got rid of the decorating-destroying pixies too.

You can have a stylish looking living space, or one you can relax in, or somewhere in between.

Light-coloured furnishing and carpet are towards the stylish end of things.

Sorry to read about the accidents. I’m impressed by your well trained dh tackling the stains like a pro 😬

Sensibletrousers · 27/06/2023 23:09

Within 2 hours of a new sofa arriving in my kitchen diner I left for 15 mins for the school run and came back to my dog having a digging session on it leaving a thousand scratch marks on the seat.

Had to turn the seat cushion over and swap them over.

I was murderous.

I think I would be murderous too!

Oh dear OP! Oh well, t's all character....

I know they're out of fashion now, but this is why we have a charcoal grey sofa on grey carpets (yes, yes, don't worry people - we have lots of colour about the house too). They hide absolutely everything - from red wine to chocolate to ink to coal dust!

ditalini · 27/06/2023 23:16

Sympathies op. I spent a huge amount of time, effort and money making curtains to fit our massive living room windows. Cream coloured.

The very evening of the day that they were hung, dh had a freak accident with a glass of red wine & the cat which ended up all over one of the curtains.

I was glad I witnessed it because there literally was nothing he could have done to avoid it.

Reckoning I had nothing to lose, I chucked it in the washing machine and it was fine! Thanks mum for advising separate linings and massive hems.

He moved like lightening on both tea spillage episodes. I was secretly impressed. He even managed to grab a towel to wrap DM's foot in as she was dripping tea ever where. Her slippers had to go in the washing machine as they were covered. He even managed to remind me that poor DM83 might require some first aid on her scalded foot!

Oh op! Sorry but I did smile reading about your dh who must have spent the last few days silently following everyone about blotting up their mistakes!
it’s an unwritten rule in our house that everything ‘nice’ gains a minor wound as soon as it’s been installed and after that it just blends in with the house 😂

The day after we had a cream coloured carpet laid our friends son vomitted an entire stomach full of Ribena on it.

😱

The cat ended up all over the curtains?! (Just joking, I have sympathy! )

Allmyghosts · 27/06/2023 23:53

Stop buying light coloured things that are easily stained surely?

Allmyghosts · 27/06/2023 23:59

For some bizarre reason whenever we got new carpets when I was a kid my mam would always flick some ash on it and trod it in Confused.

Blossomtoes · 28/06/2023 00:08

I’ve lost count of the number of glasses of red wine that have been spilt on our cream carpet. Thank God for Vanish Upholstery and Carpet spray.

Ha! Yeah, no that really would have been a disaster - she'd have clawed them to rags.

As it was, she just sat and glared at dh & I freaking out.

My Mum and Das had cream vertical blinds fitted years ago. First night they were up. My Mum had gone out, my Dad was in bed cos he was working early the next day and an old school friend came round to have a bottle of wine with me. Gets bottle out only to find it's a cork and not a screw cap. My Sister came up with the ingenious idea of stabbing a knife into the cork to open it that way. Knife went in slipped and sent the full bottle of red wine all over the blinds. Friend was pissing herself I was shitting myself trying to think how the fuck I was going to explain how the brand new blinds were now splattered in red wine along with half the wallpaper down by my chair. Thankfully by a stroke of luck my make up remover wipes shifted the stain off the blinds and a slight adjustment of my chair hid the offending stain on the paper. That was about 18 years ago and my Mum is still non the wiser of the day her blinds were so very nearly ruined 😅

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 28/06/2023 00:28

I'm more concerned that you used baking supplies to clean 😁😂

WTFAreYouForReal · 27/06/2023 22:27

Why buy light coloured furnishings if you obviously can't do things cleanly or tidily?

I don't think the "if..." is necessary.

DreamTheMoors · 28/06/2023 00:46

@Icequeen01

My husband was gone for 3 months and I added on a room and re-did the kitchen while he was gone.
After it was all finished, I was making my husband’s welcome-home dinner and dropped the enameled cast iron dutch oven on the floor and managed to break THREE IRREPLACEABLE BRAND NEW TILES. They were the last of the line and I just had to have them.
The dutch oven didn’t have a scratch on it.
I should’ve used enameled cast iron on the kitchen floor instead of tile, but it was the 80s and I wanted to be cool.

Icequeen01 · 27/06/2023 22:56

Nooooooo don't tell me that!

Sad but true! I don’t know whether the milk or the sweetener is responsible, but nothing short of steam cleaning is going to shift it - and with two indoor cats and a wheelchair-bound parent in a two-room unit, that’s not happening anytime soon.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/06/2023 01:01

Could be worse. DD puked on our new carpet then rubbed sudocrem into it

So checked the carpet this morning and you can still see a slight stain but I'm not sure anyone else would notice but us. Considering what it could have looked like I think we got off lucky.

Thanks for all your stories which made me laugh and cringe in equal measures. You helped me feel better and not quite as hapless as some posters clearly felt!

A bit late now, but in future if you have a carpet shampooer, flood the stain with water ASAP and use the shampooer to suck it up.

Dh once surpassed himself by deciding on Christmas Eve while I was out, to water the big Christmas tree, which was in a bucket of wet gravel and didn’t need watering anyway. He over watered, so the excess overflowed on to the red crepe paper I’d put round the bucket, so the red dye ended up all around the bucket - on our fairly new light-ish green carpet.

Catsmere · 28/06/2023 07:30

Oh dear!!
