How could a mother do this (TW: neglect)

Marmablade · 25/06/2023 10:36

I've just read this this morning and cannot get my head around how she thought her daughter would still be alive. There are no gruesome details in the article but it does talk about leaving a toddler alone whilst the mother went on holiday.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/crime/kristel-candelario-ohio-murder-child-death-b2363228.html

The neighbour's testimony shows the mother has form but what on earth did she think was going to happen? Clearly she didn't care what would happen but how did she think she would get away with it? Surely the neighbours would ask after her daughter?

Ohio mother charged with murder after leaving baby home alone for 10 days to die

Investigators stated in an affidavit obtained Kristel Candelario was vacationing in Puerto Rico and Detroit during the time that her baby was left on her own

How could the local authorities have allowed this?

stbrandonsboat · 25/06/2023 10:53

Expect to see a big increase in this type of behaviour once the anti abortion measures take hold. The mother obviously just couldn't be bothered and assigned no value whatsoever to the child's life.

I hadn't thought of that but yes that's certainly likely to be a consequence. What world do anti abortionists live in where they're happy for more of this to happen? Making it impossible to get an abortion doesn't make a baby wanted. It makes it resented and ultimately neglected.

Hopefully she gets a long prison sentence and as it's in the US I think she will.

In the US she won't be segregated in prison and her life will be miserable. Which is good imo.

Probably suffered neglect herself and her brain didn’t develop. Or drugs. Maybe she was overwhelmed and snapped. Who knows?

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 25/06/2023 16:27

Absolutely shocking.
That poor darling baby.

It's already started.

Absolutely everyone knows that leaving a baby alone for 8 days will result in serious harm if not death. This woman has been caring for this baby for 16 months she knows damn well what the consequences were

And it wasn't a case of snapping either, the crime happened over the span of more than a week.

Poor little baby probably pacing around and crying for her mom.

littleripper · 25/06/2023 16:46

Sociopathy, they feel nothing. They are not human, just nothing. I work with vulnerable young people. And the sociopaths are just absolutely terrifying. People imagine they are like dangerous cunning people but it is the opposite - they are just nothing - no love, no empathy, nothing at all, for anyone.

The woman in the pic looks dead behind the eyes.
Callous.
To abandon a child without water, food care and love for even 10 minutes is bad enough
Ten days?

Mandatory tubes tied so it can’t possibly happen again once she is freed from jail.

That poor little girl - it beggars belief.

Wasley · 25/06/2023 16:57

I would say she had been on a drink / drug bender for 10 days , been totally out of it somewhere . She's hiding something.

She left a 16 month old alone for 10 days without food and water. In August 2022 she left the baby with a neighbour for weeks and refused to answer her phone when the neighbour called to ask when she would pick her daughter up.

Whatever this woman's history she is not as vulnerable as a 16 month old. What kind of person goes on holiday and leaves their child to die of dehydration. I hope she's in prison until well after the menopause so that she never has an opportunity to neglect another child.

Mumsnet is the only place I've found that militantly defends heinous female behaviour.

Proudofitbabe · 25/06/2023 17:19

The suffering of that poor baby is unimaginable really. No excuse. I don't care what excuses people scrabble around to find, someone capable of arranging a 10-day "holiday" is capable of better than just ditching their baby. Evil crime, hope she gets life.

oakleaffy · 25/06/2023 17:24

If only the Neighbours has heard her cries..
But a small detached dwelling probably prevented that.

Neighbours so say often looked after the poor baby called Jailyn.

She looked such a sweet baby-
It’s appalling the cruelty that goes on behind closed doors.

My dad was an unwanted baby of a teenage mother pre abortion being legal in this country. His father left swiftly and he was eventually removed from his mother after she had a psychotic break and left him alone in his pram for three days and nights until his neighbours broke in because of his crying.

He was about a year old and has memories of the neglect and of those three days. It's been real trauma for him throughout his life; it's never left him and he still has nightmares about it aged almost 80.

This is what no abortion looks like. We should always remember that.

Not in this case- It’s inexcusable.
If that woman didn’t want her baby, adoption is better than killing her by thirst and hunger.

I hope she gets life in jail, but probably won’t, and will get pregnant again with some passing “ Boyfriend “

There’s no need to be snippy. Neglected kids don’t develop emotionally so she might not have formed an emotional connection. That’s a fact.

But don’t let me spoil your pearl clutching “that poor baby, how could she”.circlejerk.

You asked a question, I answered. You should have named the thread “ come and agree with me that this woman is a terrible parent and we are all far superior parents who care much more and put the boot in to her”. Because that’s the actual purpose of the thread.

Anyway, obviously it’s terrible. But atop pretending you care about the reasons why when you so clearly don’t 🙄

CaffineChaos · 25/06/2023 17:30

The OP asked how a mother could do this, I took the post mentioning that she could have been neglected asa child herself etc to be an answer to the question OP asked in her title rather than making excuses or defending the woman but for it.

Why didn’t the mother get him adopted?

I too knew a man( in his 80’s) who was dumped in an orphanage at age 4

It caused him a lifetime of trauma.

Indeed. It’s hard to take this place seriously sometimes. See also attacks by migrants. The contortions some MNetters will bend themselves into to avoid assigning any kind of blame or criticism to certain protected classes on MN, is extraordinary.

x2boys · 25/06/2023 17:38

There was a similar case in this country a couple of years ago.,whereby the mother went out partying, all day and night for six nights leaving her I toddler daughter alone ,and that baby died too it's very sad .

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/06/2023 17:41

I saw this earlier. It’s horrific. Poor little mite.

Zarataralara · 25/06/2023 17:44

Sociopathy, they feel nothing.

This.
Wasn’t there a young mum, possibly a teenager, who did this in Britain a couple of years ago.
And I agree, some women forced to continue with unwanted pregnancies will have probably have less attachment to their babies, more likely to resent the care they need.
That poor little girl.

Quiverer · 25/06/2023 17:51

It's perfectly clear that the mother has MH problems and/or learning difficulties.
