Tipping your hairdresser

Do you?
Going to the hairdresser has got sooo expensive. After about a year I’ve finally accepted that my hair needs some attention, I’ve chosen a local small salon owned by a couple who are the only two hairdressers. My cut is priced at £52.00 what would you tip?

£5 tip IMHO

I'm at a similar place right now. I expect my cut & colour to be circa £140 so I will tip 10%

Whatnowfgs · 24/06/2023 12:52

Yes 10% is around the correct rate.

Wherestheheatwave · 24/06/2023 12:53

I’ve never tipped a hairdresser in my life . They charge enough as it is.

Agreed, never understand tipping in the UK.

2chocolateoranges · 24/06/2023 12:54

My hair dresser owned the salon so I didn’t tip her but I would give the girl who washed my hair £2. If everyone who’s hair she washed and coffee she made left £1 that would be a nice wee added bonus each day.

Elphame · 24/06/2023 12:54

I wouldn't tip an owner at all. They set the prices after all based on their costs and the income they want to earn

I might tip a trainee who washes my hair as they'll only be on minimum wage.

There's no such thing as a 'correct rate' in the UK when it comes to tipping.

If you can afford to tip, and we're happy with the service you received, then it would always be appreciated I'm sure.

If you can't afford it, it weren't happy, then don't.

WTFAreYouForReal · 24/06/2023 12:55

If its the owner, I don't tip. If it isn't, I will, usually a fiver to the stylist and a few quid to the shampooist if it was a separate person that washed.

Mammyloveswine · 24/06/2023 12:56

My hairdresser I normally do but this time she insisted I didn't as there was a mix up on my appt (her fault but no intent!).

I pay £65 but normally pay £70! For full head of highlights and cut and includes a toner if I need one.. she's fab and imo should charge more!

Skinnermarink · 24/06/2023 12:56

No, the price is the price. I can’t afford to tip.

FredaFox · 24/06/2023 13:03

Used to tip, now the prices are going up and up I don't

2catsandhappy · 24/06/2023 13:04

£5. Say 'This is for you.' as you hand over. He/she will be thrilled. Hopefully nobody else will take a cut off it. I've heard such horrible things about restaurant tips being shared out that I like to be specific.

hopeishere · 24/06/2023 13:06

I generally see the salon owner. I don't tip him but get him a present at Christmas. I rarely have cash to tip a junior.

BishopRock · 24/06/2023 13:09

Did hairdressers used to be paid terrible money? Is that where tipping them comes from?

I've never tipped a hairdresser.

Yes it was always a low paid job

My hairdressers charge for a blow dry after a colour, £35 for that reason alone I'm not tipping
I just get it roughly dries for free and style it at home

GoodVibesHere · 24/06/2023 18:48

I give a tip but my hairdresser doesn't say 'thanks' so I don't know if she's unhappy or embarassed or what? It's always a bit akward. My cut is £40 and I tip usually £5 or sometimes £3.50 it depends what I've got on me.

Elieza · 24/06/2023 18:51

10% if she does a good job.

zoomiesdrivememad · 24/06/2023 18:51

I don't tip my hairdresser but always get her a bottle of wine birthdays, Christmas, brought her baby a present when she went on maternity leave

35965a · 24/06/2023 18:52

I don’t tip. Only ever tip in restaurants.

Luxell934 · 24/06/2023 18:55

I don’t tip mine. I only go maybe twice a year max and I’m not fussy about who does my hair there’s about 3 people there who I could book with. Plus I never carry cash so it’s always a bit awkward. I know hair dressers were once very low paid but I don’t think that’s the case nowadays is it?

ItsOnlyMeNow · 24/06/2023 18:57

I always give my colourist 10 pounds. I also give her Christmas and baby presents. I don't tip my stylist as he owns the place.

WetBandits · 24/06/2023 19:08

My hairdresser is self-employed so she does it all. I ‘tip’ by bringing her favourite iced coffee to my appointment 😊

Basilthymerosemary · 24/06/2023 19:11

No. Not after having paid £180!!! Wasn't even offered coffee one time!!!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/06/2023 19:11

Always. £10 to my colourist, £10 to my stylist and £5 to the girl who takes the colour off, does the treatments & washes my hair.

mobear · 24/06/2023 19:15

I don’t but then put some cash in a Christmas card each year. Same for beautician and cleaner.
