Let's go back to the days when . . .

What would you like to go back to?

Example

When I was young you could turn up at your GP without an appointment and sit in the waiting room and wait to be seen. These open visits ran from 8am to 10am. After that the doctor would start their rounds.

I can't remember the last time a doctor made a house call.

Urgent appointments at my practice are like hens teeth. If you call at 8am there's already a queue of 30 people waiting to snap up the available appointments, then you have to phone back at 1pm to try again.

At least the old way you got to see a doctor on the day you were ill, even if you did have to wait for an hour. ( nowadays even a booked appointment can see you wait an hour anyway)

When houses didn't cost ridiculous amounts of money so that some of us have no chance of ever owning one.

When dairy milk was as it should be without palm fat.

When porn wasn't readily available online and children were innocent for longer.

When vaping didn't exist.

When people behaved in public and phone calls were private not broadcast to anyone in a 20m radius.

I could go on 😁

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/06/2023 10:20

When you could park where you wanted, hate residential permits, and no parking hours.

Dorrmouse · 23/06/2023 10:22

When the population of Planet Earth was not beyond its carrying capacity.

Failing that, 1997.

We didn’t have social media and 24/7 rolling news. Worst things to have come from modern tech in my view. The constant connection to everything at all times is not good for our MH as a species.

hithereagain · 23/06/2023 11:14

When it wasn't trendy or encouraged to share all your thoughts and feelings on social media. When it was possible be respectful and sensitive to another's plight without having constant 'awareness' forced upon us.

When you could go to the supermarket/ doctors/ town centre without it being full of people. When there could be a few square feet of open public space without someone building 'affordable homes' on it.

When mainstream music was good. Kids would listen to the top forty and songs would be generally positive and cheerful. Now the it's normal for lyrics to be dark and downright explicit. Same with tv shows, nothing feels lighthearted anymore.

WhenIWasAFieldMyself · 23/06/2023 11:16

Before Penis Beaker.

EllaRaines · 23/06/2023 11:35

When only Sailors had tattoos.

When people were smartly dressed, no sports or gym wear worn to go shopping.

When people were very rarely overweight.

When a fish and chip was the only take away and the streets were clean and there was no litter.

When all children walked to school.

When talented people became famous, not idiot reality tv contestants.

When Bobbies walked the beat.

When children went out all day to play and came home at tea time.

When public information films were shown at school and scared the crap out of kids so that they didn't jump into rivers or off piers and bridges and die etc

Silkierabbit · 23/06/2023 11:52

When there was enough money in schools so that SN kids got some support.

When you could get a GP appointment easily. When hospitals weren't overwhelmed. When you could get an NHS dentist.

Thatsafinememory · 23/06/2023 11:55

When people on public transport used headphones to listen to shit on their phones.

TomatoSandwiches · 23/06/2023 12:01

When Sunday meant the shops where shut or only until lunchtime.
When libraries were open every weekday.
When you didn't have to worry about students taking and using knives to school.

beguilingeyes · 23/06/2023 12:16

Definitely before 24 hour rolling news. They have to fill up those hours somehow and a lot of it is inane repetitive nonsense. Interviewing the cousin of the next-door neighbour of someone who might have an opinion.
When you could go to a concert venue and buy a ticket without having to be in a queue with a million other people on line.
Personally speaking...1984 or 5.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/06/2023 12:18

when everyone knew what a woman was- it wasn’t questioned.

before elf on a shelf

when a summer month’s fuel bill wasn’t 3 figures

KateJohns · 23/06/2023 12:19

I'd like to go back to a time before the internet.
I believe a lot of modern ills are down to the internet and Social Media..

The 80s and early 90s would do me.

FishIsForCatsNotDogs · 23/06/2023 12:21

When Glastonbury festival was called "Pilton Pop festival" and there weren't helicopters flying over my house every 15 minutes.

Fairyliz · 23/06/2023 12:23

Back to a time when you got a caning if you did anything wrong at school.
It only happened to me once, but it was certainly a learning experience. I never misbehaved again.

Igmum · 23/06/2023 12:23

When traumatised children and autistic girls weren't told that they should be medically sterilised. When doctors didn't think vulnerable children should diagnose themselves.

UsingChangeofName · 23/06/2023 12:25

When Cadburys chocolate tasted gorgeous.

Silkierabbit · 23/06/2023 12:32

Yes would like a lot of chocolate back the way it was. And to be able to not have sweeteners in lots of things.

Coffeeandcake12 · 23/06/2023 12:43

Before kids could talk absolute shit to each other online while playing computer games.
Social media
When I was young and slim
Just take me back to 1996 please

KarensManagerManagingKaren · 23/06/2023 13:58

Before the big bang.

All services are totally shite now they are online, government departments, local councils, banks all have non-existent customer service now.

Not good for the planet either! The CO2 emissions from the Internet are huge, bigger than from the entire global air traffic.

shadypines · 23/06/2023 14:56
  1. When most people weren't glued to a 6 inch phone screen whilst going about their daily lives, esp when it involves potential danger eg. crossing a road or riding a horse on a busy pavement (I'm not joking).
  2. When there was proper comedy on TV most nights rather than dark and violent dramas.
EllaRaines · 23/06/2023 15:01

Before political correctness.

stbrandonsboat · 23/06/2023 15:35

When people had a backbone and didn't go around being emotionally incontinent all over the place.

When people had some manners and didn't behave like violent chimpanzees.

When people could afford to buy or rent houses.

Blossomandbee · 23/06/2023 15:53

When town centres and shopping centres had lots of shops.
When parking was free or cheap.
When chocolate tasted good and wasn't full of palm oil.
When you could actually buy squash/soft drinks that tasted nice and not full of artificial sweeteners.
When you could go on holiday in term time (within reason) and not be ripped off by holiday companies in the school holidays. When you could see a doctor or dentist in reasonable time.
When the likes of TikTok didn't exist and all the brain rot and bullying that goes with it.
