Let's go back to the days when . . .

What would you like to go back to?

Example

When I was young you could turn up at your GP without an appointment and sit in the waiting room and wait to be seen. These open visits ran from 8am to 10am. After that the doctor would start their rounds.

I can't remember the last time a doctor made a house call.

Urgent appointments at my practice are like hens teeth. If you call at 8am there's already a queue of 30 people waiting to snap up the available appointments, then you have to phone back at 1pm to try again.

At least the old way you got to see a doctor on the day you were ill, even if you did have to wait for an hour. ( nowadays even a booked appointment can see you wait an hour anyway)

I was having the same thoughts as you. Some very rose tinted views of the past.

Women couldn’t get mortgages either. How would the bank manager know if a man was gay anyway?

Icecolddrink · 23/06/2023 18:04

They wouldn’t. You wouldn’t get one if you were gay though. Section 28 too - there’s another one for those who wish to go back to the good old days in school when the plebs were kept in place with the cane.

When men did not pretend they believed they were women and vast swathes of society did not collude with them in this.

I'd love to go to an idealised rose tinted version of the 90s. Not the real one!

I'm afraid that's always gone on. NN is obsessed 😂

When people have manners, morals, respect and pride.

Agreed. Sometimes I think "is this really happening"

Have I taken a wrong turn and ended up on Facebook? I feel like any moment I'm going to get a paean to drinking water from the hosepipe or being hit by your father using his shoe or going off to ride your bike all day with a packet of sandwiches in waxpaper and five bob in your pocket. Or one of these charming cartoons.

The comments about unruly kids always makes me think of the Socrates quote circa 470 BC. 😂

I do sometimes hark back to the nineties when chocolate and music were good and it felt as though the country felt positive. And house prices were affordable for normal families. But I also had the optimism of youth and being free so who knows if it was really better.

Totally agree with the positives social changes and support and safeguarding options for woman and children at risk. Plus medical advancements, so breast cancer is no longer a death sentence for many. I have children in a same sex relationship and spent my teens and twenties believing I could not have children.

Life before 9/11. My anxiety over terrorism, flying & just generally unsafe & panicky began that day. I'll never forget going to see 'Heartbreakers'- the film with Sigorney (sp?) & Jennifer Loves Chewitts that day as a youngster, coming out & hearing people on the train talking in shocked, hushed tones about how life would never be the same.

As a happily childfree person, I'm still shocked that people had kids following this event (& things like Isis etc) but then I do have severe anxiety. Something that wasn't as bad before all this crap & evil going on in the world.

madroid · 23/06/2023 18:41

When the countryside was full of wildlife and a long hot summer just meant a few weeks of warm weather.

When you could be reasonably sure of receiving timely, qualified medical assistance if you needed it. When everyone agreed that things services should work as intended.

When we didn't pretend this country is so poor that people can't afford to eat and the wealth was shared out more fairly.

AmeliaWarnerBros · 23/06/2023 18:42

And films & music were the best in my childhood imho- the late '80s, early '90s. Nothing like it these days. Gosh- I am sounding like my father- a man I am no contact with!!

I don’t want to go back in time but I would like some things to go back to how they were….
When fruit and veg were all loose - no plastic!
When our streets weren’t full of fast food places.
When most people weren’t overweight - see above point 👆
When hospital beds were available for all who needed them.

Wherestheheatwave · 23/06/2023 18:50

The days when you could speak to a person on the phone . No ‘options’ to press, just a human being with a brain, not a call centre.

When you could go into a bank and speak to the manager and they would know you personally.

When the doctor knew you personally and actually listened properly and had a diagnosis rather than a slot of ten minutes whilst they stare at a screen and then print off a lot of stuff from the internet. They actually had some medical knowledge and experience .
Also they bothered to read your notes properly before seeing you. They might offer some advice or valuable reflections rather than shove pills at you without bothering to check any contraindications.

The days when people had manners and some consideration.

When trains had compartments and proper dining options . You could sit in silence without listening to those around you in conversation on their phones.

The days when music was actually music not just banging with incomprehensible lyrics

The days when there was something actually worth watching on TV

The days when people listened without being on their phones .

when you could go out for a meal without being ripped off and have something really delicious to eat.

No one's bitter. It's nostalgia we're talking about.

Icecolddrink · 23/06/2023 19:31

There’s a bit of bitterness. I don’t know when this mystical time was when everyone had manners and respect either!

F0XCUB7 · 23/06/2023 19:38

I'm 48! I just enjoy my life now!

There's always been bad stuff but I think most things, particularly for women, are way better now

When people watched concerts with their eyes and not through their phone.

Isitpaydayyet · 23/06/2023 19:42
