Am I ever likely to have another period?

Hi all, guess this is a question for older mn-ers. So I'm in late 40s, periods dwindling away for a couple of years. Last proper one June last year. A few extremely light ones (don't even know if I'd call them periods really) since.

I think I am now technically post menopausal(?) I don't mind, the perimenopause has been difficult but should I bin the sanitary ware now?

Your shared experiences are welcome.

In your 40s I think the guidance is two whole years with no periods.

Yes it is. However nobody explained that to my BF's DM and I'm glad that they didn't Wink

I'm 50 soon (sorry don't mean to be facetious. I get your point: these things are not an exact date so your advice is helpful.)
Maybe not out of the woods yet. Thanks.

Every month I pray I've had my last one - then what 54 days last month and Hello AF

i would still keep some items with me just in case

Wolfiefan · 22/06/2023 17:33

Didn’t take it that way at all. I’m 50. Haven’t had one for a year. But needs to be longer I think.

Notajollyholly · 22/06/2023 17:35

I had 2 years with one period in each (around spring time) was all over by 45, I wouldn't throw everything away yet

Crikey, I have never heard that before - I had better do some reading up!
I'm 46 and currently 123 days without a period. I'd be quite happy if this was it now...highly unlikely I know Smile

I'm glad you took my comment the right way. Your advice has been very helpful. So I've got another year it seems. I thought it was just one year. Thanks.

Very very very late motherhood?

The 2 years is relating to birth control to prevent a 😲

RuthW · 22/06/2023 18:01

Isn't it 2 years if under 50 and 1 year if over 50? That's from any bleeding at all.

You might be done but you might not. Mine went to every 7 months before they stopped aged 54.

greenspaces4peace · 22/06/2023 18:02

sanitary wear does come in handy for other uses in life.
especially the individually wrapped liners.

but you certainly can pair down.
a dr might consider those light spotting events as periods though? not sure.

GalileoHumpkins · 22/06/2023 18:35

If you've had any bleeding then you aren't postmenopausal I don't think. Menopause is one whole year without any bleeding.

Summerhillsquare · 22/06/2023 18:44

I'm similar, and when I had an nhs consultant appointment recently she announced "your periods will stop altogether in 6 months ". I should have asked her where she kept her crystal ball!

caringcarer · 22/06/2023 19:37

I don't want to freak anyone out but my Mum's periods stopped for 5 years then started again out of the blue. She thought she had cancer as bleeding after what she thought was her menopause. Turned out it was just periods starting up again. GP told her it sometimes happens. Another 15 months before they went again. This time for good.

Hoppinggreen · 22/06/2023 19:40

I’m 51 and been on the pill for many years for painful periods as well as contraception. I thought I might as well stop and bloody hell (literally)
Went back on it asap

Oh that's awful. I used to have awful periods too and the Mirena coil literally changed my life.

Kazzy50 · 25/01/2024 21:41

As far as I understand the start of menopause is when you have gone 12 months without a period whether in your 40s or 50s. 🤔

RuthW · 25/01/2024 21:52

You are not post meno yet. If last period was 1/6/23 then you will be post meno on 2/6/25 as you are under 50.

I had a period every 9 months for a few years and reached post menopause at age 53.

Kazzy50 · 25/01/2024 22:28

I went to a menopause specialist doctor last year when I was 48 and she had told me I have to be 12 months without a period in order to be menopausal.

Seeline · 25/01/2024 22:32

I've made it to 9 months twice. Last one was last May. I haven't thrown anything away yet and I'm nearly 56!

Nextbitoflife · 25/01/2024 22:38

Think it can be a while of no af for months, then a deluge. According to my mates. Im 51 - have a mirena and no periods so I’ve no effing clue really if mine have gone or not. I used to get occasional spotting and don’t get that any more, prob for 6 months.

RobinsInTheTree · 25/01/2024 22:38

I went 9 months without a period in my 55th year after previously having all periods every 28 days as regular as clockwork. But that was then it, have had totally nothing since.

I don't think it's set in stone - just general guidelines.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 25/01/2024 23:12

Still regular as clockwork here at 50 and quite ready to be done with it.

BudgetFoodie · 25/01/2024 23:14

I'm 56 and still having periods......its like some crule joke. I live in hope of each one being the last!
