I’ve just listened to The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and 11.22.63. Loved them all!

What next please?

Thanks!

I'm just about to start Fairy Tale - glad it's got some reviews on here

pointythings · 21/06/2023 17:43

Duma Key is my favourite King and one of my favourite ever books. I really enjoyed Fairy Tale too. Under the Dome has the worst ending this world has ever seen, but King does his usual excellent portrayal of the underbelly of small town America, so I'm inclined to forgive him. I loved Bag of Bones, Dolores Claiborne and also the Desperation/The Regulators twin set of books. You really need to read both if you're going to go there.

I hated From A Buick 8, The Tommyknockers and Cell. Not reading them again. The Shining will always be a classic, as will The Dead Zone (in which King more or less predicts Donald Trump, which is terrifying).

I agree the ending of under the dome is abysmal (are we spoiling the book for people?) but its a really good book in every other way. There is a TV series based on the book which King produced and it has somewhat different reason for the Dome happening, so either King realised what a bad ending it was or it didn't make good TV.

I also found Cell awful, and I didn't enjoy IT as well as a few others.

Needful Things

efeslight · 21/06/2023 18:14

Read The Stand twice, loved Gerald's game, Tom Gordon, Joyland.
Never been disappointed with 1 of his books, and agree, they are easy to read.

Hoppingroo · 21/06/2023 18:18

IT - I think it’s an epic masterpiece. I’m re reading Needful Things at the moment.

SnappyDragony · 21/06/2023 18:19

I'm not a big fan of Mr King in general but I have enjoyed a few:
Cujo
Carrie
Misery
Thinner (pen name one)
Read in my teens so had a teen perspective on them
I read IT this year aged 33 and really really enjoyed it! So much so might do a re read soon as it's a chunk and I'm bound to have missed some nuances. The nostalgia for being the age also helped I think

Hoppingroo · 21/06/2023 18:20

To add- The Bazaar of Bad Dreams also has a collection of short stories by Stephen King which are good.
Also enjoyed Carrie.

His books are not in the slightest bit hard to read - the difficulty would be in being able to out it down and leave it for a couple of days. I am reading his latest "Fairy Tale" at the moment and it is fantastic. I read Carrie when I was 13, and I am going to be 50 this year - Stephen King remains one of the most reliable comforts of my adult life. Even his less good books will transport you for a few hours.

I’m re-reading Fairy Tale! Another one I hope to see in movie form one day!

Doseagullstasteoffish · 21/06/2023 18:26

The Talisman is my favourite book of all time, I can’t believe no one has mentioned it yet! The girl who loved Tom Gordon is great too

HeartShapedSea · 21/06/2023 18:26

The Stand us by far the book I enjoyed the most. The Institute is good too which is a more recent one.

bluepeterentry · 21/06/2023 18:43

The Outsider
the Green Mile
Fairytale
11.22.63
The Institute
Sleeping Beauties
I've read and/ or reread all of these and loved them the most
I absolutely adored 11.22.63

MySerenity · 21/06/2023 18:44

Fairy Tale!

Also enjoying Billy Summers

Thegoldgrind · 21/06/2023 18:53

The Stand is my absolute favourite book ❤️ Also love Insomnia!

Watchthedoormat · 21/06/2023 19:01

I love IT and Needful things.
Also read Apt pupil many years ago and enjoyed it.
I bought Liseys Story from a charity shop but for some reason just can't get into it.
Does anyone know if it's worth persevering?

Watchthedoormat · 21/06/2023 19:03

I think Apt Pupil is in one of his collections actually 🤔

He published some under the name Bachman (the longest walk, running man etc) which are brilliant. Running man is nothing like the film btw.
Longest walk has stayed with me for a very long time. Scary that it once seemed so out there.

The Long Walk is my favourite too. Why would anyone volunteer for that?

Gerald's Game is excellent too.

cassiatwenty · 21/06/2023 19:13

Sleeping Beauties by Stephen and Owen King

NooNakedJacuzziness · 21/06/2023 19:18

@Watchthedoormat I found Lisey's Story hard going too - blood bools, other bools, too many bloody bools

Happybara · 21/06/2023 20:07

Another vote for the Talisman - I think it may also be my all time favourite book too. Fushing feef…

magnolia1997 · 21/06/2023 20:11

Pet Semetary

Toooldtoworry · 21/06/2023 20:12

The 11.22.63
Needful Things
IT (I cannot watch the films)
Green Mile

There was a short stories book written years ago that's really good but I can't remember the name.

GiraffeDoor · 21/06/2023 20:16

It's got to be "Under the dome" for me. In fact, the only Stephen King I haven't really enjoyed was 11/22/63 (I wasn't getting anywhere with it, so I gave up, but actually I came back to it a few months later and managed to get much more into it)

I bought them as one title The Bachman Books with all the novellas in it. I’d forgotten about The Longest Walk, I’m going to have to read it again.
